Off The Grid Readathon – July 2021 edition!

It’s that time again folks – and, once again, life got busy and I left everything to the last minute. I should win an award for the worst readathon host in the history of hosts lol.

If you’re not aware of what the Off The Grid Readathon is, it’s a quarter readathon run by yours truly (worst host ever). It begins on the first Friday of the month and runs through Sunday until 11:59pm. So that’s 72 whole hours to read.

The difference with this readathon is that the goal isn’t to read for 72 hours straight. The goal here is to practice reading without distractions. So many times I’ve wasted all of my free reading time scrolling through Instagram. If you have only one hour to read that weekend, make reading a priority!! Put your phone in another room, put it on silent – do whatever you need to do to not distract yourself. And DON’T tell yourself that you’ll just check your notifications quick and then get back to reading….. it never turns out well lol. You’ll be surprised to see what you can accomplish with only a few minutes of reading time when you’re not checking your phone or watching Netflix….. I speak from experience! For any other detailed information, check out this post –> https://bionicbookwormblog.wordpress.com/2019/12/16/off-the-grid-readathon-2020-dates/

Also, there are no sign ups or complications. If you want to participate then please do! Let me know on Twitter @OffTheGridReads. I would love to know what you’re reading and how you’re progressing. I’m not overly active that weekend (since i’m supposed to be reading lol) but I’ll check in throughout the readathon.

Also – my daughter turns 16 on the friday…….. SIXTEEN!! I’m still in a state of absolute shock and awe as to how that happened. I blinked and now here we are.

That’s enough rambling. Let’s get to the books I’ll be reading!

The first book i’ll be reading is A LITTLE LIFE by Hanya Yanagihara. This is a book i’ve been needing to read for the longest time. So many people have put this on their “all time favourites lists” and I knew this book would destroy me. I’m partway through this already and I have a feeling i’ll be nearing the end when the readathon starts. Not sure it’s a good idea to start a readathon with a book I know will tear my heart from my chest and leave me bleeding out on the bathroom floor….. but I’m a sucker for punishment and torture I guess!

Annnnnnnnnnd on that note, I’m going to need a cutesy pick me up and that’s when this book comes in lol. MOONCAKES by Wendy Xu and Suzanne Walker looks like the most adorable graphic novel about baking, witchcraft, and werewolves. The colour palette used in this graphic novel is also soothing and beautiful. I can’t wait for this!!!

And finally, if the other 2 books are finished I plan on starting this glorious novel!! MALIBU RISING the the new Taylor Jenkins Reid and I couldn’t be more excited! She’s quickly become a favourite author over the last few years. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and then Daisy Jones and the Six are two of my all time favourites – and they couldn’t be further from the books that I normally enjoy! I don’t normally enjoy books about famous people. The personality types usually aren’t “people” I understand or enjoy and their relationships are usually too dramatic and make no sense to me at all. But the way she writes is absolutely spellbinding and you can’t help but love every single aspect of the characters, even if you don’t agree with or understand them. I need this book in my life ASAP!

So those are the books that I plan to read this weekend. I know that with my daughters birthday and having to work every day all day (nothing new), I’m not going to read as much as I hope I will. But still I can try. The only thing that I actually CAN promise is that I’ll continue to be the worst host ever. That I can do with flying colours!

Are you participating this weekend? What will you be reading?

Until next time, happy reading!

  2. I’ve never participated before because I know I am horrible at getting off my phone and computer so I know I will fail but I think I want to attempt it for the first time ever this weekend. If I do decide to join this will be the first readathon I’ve joined this year.

Psst! I hate to tell you this, but July 2nd was the first Friday in July! 🙂

I love this readathon and plan to participate. I only read one short quick book over the 4-day holiday weekend because I could not put down the laptop.

Hope your daughter has a great birthday!

    See ya Friday!
