Audiobooks. Some love them and some hate them. Some people don’t even consider them “reading a book” because you’re not reading it physically and it’s being read to you instead. I happen to be on the “love them” side of the argument and, over the years, i’ve come across a few that have blown me away by how amazing they are!!! If you love audiobooks and any of these are on your TBR list, they might be worth checking out!
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in October – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!
ILLUMINAE (The Illuminae Files trilogy) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Easily the best audiobooks EVER!!! Not only is this a full cast narration, but there are special effects and music!! I always wondered how such a unique format of a book would translate to audio but I think that I enjoyed the audio experience a little more than reading! I worried that it would be hard to figure out who was talking but it wasn’t hard at all. I can’t recommend this one enough!!!!!!!!!
SLEEPING GIANTS (Themis Files trilogy) by Sylvain Neuvel
Speaking of full cast audiobooks, this is another one! I read the first one psychically but listened to the last two of the trilogy – it’s quite the experience! This series is told in the way of journals and interviews/interrogation which made listening to it seem more real. If I’m remembering right there were even a few fake news casts throughout as well!
THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas
The woman that narrates this audiobook is hands down my favourite voice! Her name is Bahni Turpin and she’s narrated quite a few books including Children of Blood and Bone, The Help, The Sun is Also A Star, and so many more! Her voice is so soothing yet commanding and filled with emotion. She’s absolutely incredible!!!
CRAZY RICH ASIANS by Kevin Kwan
This audiobook was so entertaining! It felt like I was listening to a movie without the picture on the screen. The narrator did an incredible job of changing voices for the characters. Sometimes voices can be annoying but this one made the book so much more enjoyable. The book is about excess – people with large personalities to match their large bank accounts. It fit perfectly!
DAISY JONES AND THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Yet another full cast audiobook that fit the format perfectly! This is written like a biography about Daisy Jones and The Six, a band in the 70’s who made it big. We get different character perspective as they’re talking to someone about their history. Each perspective is announced and differentiated so you know who’s talking. I switched back and forth between physically reading and the audiobook, and I definitely preferred the audio!

Yes, Illuminae! I considered Bahni Turpin, but I actually oscillate between liking her and not, just depending upon the character – but I had a lot of fun with On The Come Up.

I’ve heard people recommend Illuminae via audio. I’m kinda confused with how it works because of all the mixed media??

I was confused about how it would work as well. You obviously don’t get the visual representation, but there are effects and things that change depending on what’s happening. It’s brilliant! Highly recommend!
Thanks for sending along the link! Getting you added to the list now 🙂

I’ve grown to enjoy the whisper-sync option on my Kindle and love that I can have a mini radio play in my ear as I read the words my favourite authors have penned.
Of course, not all narrators are in the same class, as not all authors reach me with their writing styles.
Great Top 5 topic, Shanah, I really enjoyed this week. x
