Welcome to the first week of the Harry Potter theme month of February! I’ve been SO excited for these topics….. it feels a little like Christmas day finally being able to post this! I prepared myself for these posts by watching the Harry Potter movies (Like I really needed an excuse!) and I think I’ve made some pretty solid choices. Let’s be real though – as soon as I see the participants lists I know I’m going to want to smack myself in the head for not thinking of it first!
I was trying to decide if I wanted to just choose books or characters that would belong in the Hogwarts houses. I couldn’t decide, so I’ve gone with a mix of both. If you aren’t familiar with the traits of Gryffindor House, here’s what their main traits are:
They are experience oriented, honest, practical, blunt, passionate, playful, funny, trusting, idealistic, stubborn and procrastinators. They live in the moment, don’t take themselves seriously, are wary of manipulators and liars, have a strong moral centre, and are unafraid to seize opportunities and make changes.
Here are my top 5 books/characters that fit these traits:
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in February – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!
SKYWARD by Brandon Sanderson. Specifically main character, Spensa.
This was probably the first book that came to mind when I thought of Gryffindor. I remember when Harry was being sorted into his house and the sorting hat mentioned a chance to prove himself. That is Spensa in a nut shell. She’s lived her whole life being known as the coward’s daughter. She’s had to work 50 times harder than everyone else just to prove her worth. She’s brave, stubborn, is unafraid to seize her moment, and has a strong moral centre. She’s most definitely a Gryffindor!
THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir. Specifically main character, Mark Watney
Quite literally that entire paragraph outlining the traits of a Gryffindor applies to this man. He’s in one of the most stressful situations that a person could be in, and he still found a way to keep his positivity and humour. He never took himself seriously, even when he was an absolute genius. He never gave up on himself, and his natural curiosity was something that saved his life many times over. When one thing didn’t work, he found another way.
THE LUNAR CHRONICLES SERIES by Marissa Meyer
For some reason, the books themselves, as well as almost all the characters, feel like they would be Gryffindor! They’re all very adventurous, and all very blunt given the situation. Their lives are on the line and truthful communication is the only thing that will get them through this. They’re all wary of liars and manipulators because, I mean – if you’ve read the books, then you will understand. There’s so much manipulation that can take place and they aren’t really sure who to trust. This series is also about change. Though some are wary of it, they all realize that chance is the only way to truly move forward.
ARTEMIS by Andy Weir – Specifically main character, Jazz Bashara
I struggled deciding to put this one here. In fact, I might also list this one for Slytherin! Jazz is the type of character that you either love or hate. I would say that a lot of you don’t like her, but I absolutely LOVE her and can see a lot of myself in her. She is literally all of the things listed above. Experience oriented (she knows her stuff and know how/when to use it), honest (I guess this one is stretching it a bit), blunt (this is where her honesty comes in. Whether it hurts someone or not, she isn’t willing to dumb down the truth), passionate, funny, trusting (though this sometimes bites her in the ass), idealistic, stubborn, and a procrastinator. I think this sums up why I love her so much!
CARAVAL by Stephanie Garber
This last one isn’t really related to any specific characters in particular. In fact, I would put Scarlett as a Hufflepuff and Tella as a Slytherin. But, that aside, I think that this is a book that a Gryffindor would really enjoy reading. There’s magic, bravery, deception, loyalty, trust issues, game play, and so much more.

We both have TLC in our list and I’m still reading Skyward but yeah, I agree with you. It should be in this list. 🙂
Here’s mine so it’s easier for you to find 🙂

Glad you like it! I was a little nervous people wouldn’t like it or be able to relate to it.

I also chose the Lunar Chronicles – such a perfect fit!
Caraval sounds fascinating – that goes straight to my to-read-pile.

I feel like these topics are going to take me so long to figure out! I also ended up putting The Martian on my list, although with the number of times he almost blew himself up, he could be considered a Hufflepuff, too. I’m eagerly awaiting Ravenclaw, because that’s my house!

Lol is that a Hufflepuff house trait I need to add? If you blow yourself up, you might be a Hufflepuff….. 😂 😂 😂
I think most book lovers are Ravenclaw – that’s my house as well 🙂

My boyfriend’s a Gryffindor, and got offended when I asked if he was a Ravenclaw, too!

Love this topic and can’t wait for the Hufflepuff reads! 😀
The Lunar Chronicles fits perfect on this list! Cinder and Scarlet are definitively Gryffindors. But I think Cress would also be a good book for Hufflpuffs, because I consider Cress a Hufflepuff. What do you think?

The Lunar Chronicles almost ended up on my list! I’ve been trying to not put the same five books on every list I write until the end of time, so I left them off, but I whole heartedly agree. Spensa was a slam dunk. 🙂

Lol Spensa really is a slam dunk!
Just a heads up, I didn’t get a notification that you did a post today. If I didn’t read this comment I would have missed you! 😢 if I do miss you in the future, feel free to send me your link in the comments 🙂

No worries, I didn’t add the link until this morning as I’ve been linking directly to the Top 5 post of the day, instead of one of your others posts. But I think I’m going to change that up and start linking to the monthly topic posts instead so the links are ready when I schedule them.

No worries. Doesn’t matter which post you use. I’m just afraid to miss you and make you think I’m ignoring you 😂

I can totally see The Martian fitting into this list!

Skyward is SUCH a Gryffindor book 😂 And The Martian too! I haven’t read Andy Weir’s other book, but if it’s anything like The Martian, I’d say it fits perfectly into this category!

Omg I love Artemis!!! One of my favourites. The main character is very love her or hate her though. She’s not feminine at all and very bold and crude. Just my type of personality 😂

Oh yes, Lunar Chronicles! I didn’t even think about that but it makes so much sense. As for Caraval, I can totally picture Harry and co having that as a group read.

This is THE BEST THEME. I’m so excited for this week, and all the other houses too! There was no way I could limit sorting characters to just 5 (although sorting characters is something I enjoy doing, ha ha), so I did books for Gryffindors. I can’t wait to read what other people chose!
Here’s mine: https://thegrumpybibliophile.blogspot.com/2019/02/5-books-for-gryffindors.html I actually chose the Martian, too! And I think the Lunar Chronicles is a great choice, as well.

All links seems to be working fine on my end. I got you added yesterday. Did you get a ping back for it? Quite a few people have mentioned pingbacks weren’t working. WordPress has made some changes lately and it’s causing A LOT of issues!

I’m using mobile now and the link for mine shows error loading post ? Not sure if just me.
But no worries I was just curious about the no pingback. 🙂 Probably wordpress quirk or the updates you mentioned

This is such a great list, Shanah! I’ve never read any of them before but they’re all on my TBR. Though I can remember a time that I really wanted to get a copy of Artemis.
And picking books for this list is a little hard too because I honestly thought of putting Mirage here but I figured it would be a better entry for my Slytherin list hahahaha

The lunar chronicles is definitely a Gryffindor book but I think it would do well as as Ravenclaw book too- with the world building and new setting

Mark Watney is perfect for this! I never would have thought of him, but, YES.

I’m loving everyone’s take on this list! I’ve got some Lunar Chronicles sneaking in on mine too!

I definitely see Mark Watney as a Fred & George Gryffindorian with a hint of the Ravenclaw curiosity and open-mindedness!
