I’m not sure that I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a seasonal reader. A mood reader too, but seasonal reader is taking things a little too far lol. In the spring and summer, I like to read fantasy, adventure, and contemporary. In fall and winter I like to read fantasy, historical fiction, science fiction, and romance. There’s just something about the weather changes that makes me want to read different things! These are 5 books that I have read and think they would make fantastic fall cozy reads to snuggle under a blanket with a mug of hot chocolate 🙂 And for me, cozy fall reads doesn’t always mean happy – I think that to me, fall reads are full of magic, fantasy, magic, and hard topics.
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in October – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!
THE HAZEL WOOD by Melissa Albert
Ok this one isn’t entirely cozy lol. This is just a book that has perfect elements for the month of October in general. Parts of it are cozy, but it focuses more on magic, magical realism, fiction and mystery. There is also an inclusion of fairy tales, which very much gives me vibes of fall!
THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeanette Walls
Once again, not entirely cozy – But there’s something about it that makes this the perfect fall read. I also remember that I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith around the same time and it was perfect. These two books are incredibly similar – books that follow families who struggle, grow, succeed, fail, try, and love. These two books also made me cry like a baby and hit my emotions far more than expected. Glad I had my blanket and hot chocolate for comfort!
THE CITY OF BRASS by S.A. Chakraborty
Now this is the perfect fall read if you’re looking to lose yourself completely in another world. The world building in this book is so amazing! She has the perfect ability to transport you to another time and place, making you forget your surroundings. It’s also full of magic 🙂
THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern
Like The City of Brass, the writing and atmosphere in this book is stellar!!! This circus is a mystery, shows up without warning, and only opens at night. The descriptions of this circus immediately transports me to fall for some reason. I swear I can smell the smells and hear the sounds every time I think of this book – that’s how amazing the world building is in this book! This book is just so magical and enchanting!
HARRY POTTER by J.K. Rowling
Every time is the perfect time for Harry Potter, let’s be honest. But there’s something special when you read it or watch the movies in October and November. Every fall, I have a marathon where I watch a new movie for every day of the week. Yes, I watch them all year, but October seems to be the perfect time. Magic, witches, wizards, pumpkin pasties, ghosts, candles, spells – it’s like coming home 🙂

I was very excited about The Hazel Wood but then I started seeing a lot of not-so-great reviews and kind of gave up. Do you think I should give it a shot sometime? 🤔
I have The Night Circus but still haven’t read it – I plan to soon though! 😊
Great list! What is a Fall post without Harry Potter in it? 😄

I personally loved it. It was dark and mysterious. The main character isn’t likeable. At all. But it explains why she is the way she is in the end and that made it great for me. If you’re not sure I suggest maybe getting it from the library or trying it on audio 🙂

Good idea! I might try the audiobook, unless I end up finding it secondhand for cheap 🙂

I read The Glass Castle for a memoir writing class in undergrad and loved it. I can’t believe I practically forgot about it until I saw it on your list.

Have you read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? For me, that one might have even been a little better actually!

A good friend of mine has recommended it to me but I unfortunately haven’t read it yet.

I totally didn’t do the stereotypical cozy books, either. (And after writing that word approximately six dozen times, it no longer looks like a word to me.)

I’m with everyone else, I too think you’ve got a great list here. And I am sooo looking forward to getting hold of a copy of CITY OF BRASS.

I really hope you love it! If you don’t then I will totally feel responsible 😂

Ha! Ha! I promise I won’t yell at you if I don’t like it. But I’m guessing it will be my kind of read. I need something magical right about now.

Great list!
I did wonder what exactly cozy books are! 😀 It’s quite subjective it seems. For me it’s books that are set during autumn and have some kind of mystery going on. I mean, that’s pretty much all i read, so it’s not like i know what else is out there.
I want to read the Hazel Wood tho! ❤

Cozy reads are definitely subjective. I usually gravitate towards fantasy and brutality which is the total opposite to cosy 😂

Great picks!! Oh my gosh, HP is absolutely perfect for fall!!

HP during the Fall/Winter seasons always feels like a real treat! The Night Circus was amazing the first time but I wouldn’t mind a re-read if only to dive back into the atmospheric writing in that book, you’re right! I smelled everything described in that circus haha! I’ve saved City Of Brass for October & I’m STOKED! EPIC recommendations 🙂
Happy Reading! ❤ ❤ ❤

I wouldn’t mind rereading the Night Circus too! If I can fit it in sometime in October I might just do that!

I’m re-reading Harry Potter because of this exact reason! It’s making me super emotional but hey, just means it’s good.

I totally agree with The Hazel Wood. Simply because it’s been on my TBR for ages and.. ever since my Autumn-mood started playing up, I’ve been eyeing it more and more? Only a matter of time before I pick it up, I guess!
