Top 5 Winter Reads!

Hello all and happy Top 5 Tuesday! I have always been a massive mood reader and sometimes those moods are influenced with the seasons. There are some books that just beg to be read during a certain season! In the winter I love to read epic fantasies, historical fiction, or books that have a chilly winter setting. I could probably make a list a mile long when it comes to winter reads, but I’ll keep it to just 5 for today 🙂

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in DECEMBER – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

The bear and the nightengale

THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE by Katherine Arden

This is the epitome of the perfect winter read!! The atmosphere and setting of this book is absolutely outstanding! As you can tell by the cover, this is set in a cold and snowy land, filled with magic, folklore, fantasy, and hardship. The writing is honestly what makes this book so amazing. It’s so easy to lose yourself completely in this book!

between-shades-of-gray

BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by Ruta Sepetys

Set in the European north during the war, reading this book during the winter season is almost a must. The hell these characters endure during this book and the setting of the biting cold is something that makes it seem all the more real. You might not want to know that these events could be real – this was haunting. I cried so many times throughout this book, it was almost too much to handle. But it’s a story of survival, determination, and perseverance that has stayed with me for years.

Wintersong

WINTERSONG by S. Jae-Jones

Another winter given – it even has winter in the title! This book reminded me so much of The Bear and the Nightingale. They both have so much folklore intertwined with the real world and it’s stunning! I was obsessed with this book! The emotions that hit me during this book was overpowering. I was so invested in these characters and the world it consumed me completely!!!

frost-blood

FROSTBLOOD BY ELLY BLAKE

This to me is the perfect winter fantasy. A young woman comes into her powers and fights for her life and freedom. There was also an element of frost magic against fire magic that made it seem even more wintery! Not to mention the setting – it was fantastic! There was also a bit of warm winter romance budding – what’s not to love!

Hunted

HUNTED by Meagan Spooner

A Beauty and the Beast retelling?? Yes please! If you’re reading this then there’s almost a 100% chance that you’re a fellow book lover, so you know the setting of beauty and the beast. The harsh winters at the castle added with all that mystery, love and magic – it’s a must read on a snowy winter day!! This retelling was absolutely wonderful!

    1. If you loved Wintersong then I know you’ll love The Bear and the Nightingale! I believe they deal with the same realm of folklore and have the same type of setting! And yes I read the sequel of Wintersong,…. I didn’t like it at all unfortunately. I feel like it lost all the magic that was in the first book! More specifically, the male love interest. I was so sad!

      1. I didn’t very far into the sequel before I stopped reading. I might go back to it later.
