I’ve lived in Canada my entire life so I should be used to the snow. I am, but I don’t have to like it! When I think of snow I think of the mess, the shovelling, and soaked pants. About the only thing I do like about it is that it forces me to stay inside and read more! It can also be atmospheric while reading 🙂 Ok, I guess snowball fights and sledding is kind of fun too……. but, once again, soaked pants! LOL! Here are the 5 books that I think are perfect for a cozy winter read!
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in December – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!
I guess I’m starting this off with a weird one. This whole list may be weird to be honest. This isn’t really in a winter setting (the seasons change) but there’s just something about it that I love about reading this series in the winter time. There’s magic, whimsy, action, friendships, romantic relationships, and even an underlying darkness. I couldn’t imagine reading this one in the summer time. It just fits with the snow and chilly wind for some reason!
I’ve only read a few chapters of this one, but it SCREAMS winter! Just look at that cover! It even starts off on a snowy night as a tale is being told around the fire. I don’t have a fireplace, but if I did then that’s precisely where I would be sitting while reading this book. The atmosphere and general feel of this book begs to be read on a snowy winters night.
Yes, I know, I’m like a broke record that repeats this series as often as I can. But you have to admit that this series is best read (and watched!) in the winter time. I don’t know what it is but, for some reason, winter just seems to be the best time to read all things magical. One of my goals for 2018 is to reread the Harry Potter series and I’ll be starting and ending in the winter!
I’m not the biggest Nora Roberts fan in the world, but I love a good romance every once in a while. I specifically enjoy her paranormal trilogies (once again, the theme of fantastical and magical elements) in the winter time.
You’re looking at me weird for putting this on a “cozy” list aren’t you? I bet you are. No, the subject matter is most definitely not cozy at times, but there’s something so heartwarming about it at the same time. The setting, the relationships, the innocence, the heart break, the struggles – everything. I tried reading this one in the summer time and set it aside, knowing that I would appreciate it more in the winter. It was a good choice for me!
TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:
- Dreamy Reads
- Paige – The Girl With All The Books
- Birdie Bookworm
- Rachael – Beach Bookworm
- Joe – J.W. Martin
- Erin – A Red Head’s Rambling
- Rebecca – My Life As A Sports Fangirl
- Mini – Book And Corner
- Nia – Shades Of Paper
- Rose – Stuck In Fiction
- Kristina – Kristina Reads
- Kyera – Kyera’s Library
- Elizabeth – Mountains of Books
This one was a little difficult for me and pushed me a bit out of my comfort zone. I don’t read many books set in winter, or any books that can be deemed holiday themed, so I had to go for the books that have a certain feel to them. The general consensus is that books with fantastical and magical elements are the ones to go to! I hope you enjoyed this list! What books would you recommend for a cozy winter read?? I’m always looking for recommendations!
Until next time, happy reading!
We just got our first taste of snow last night and I hear you…just because I am used to it and know it’s coming doesn’t mean I have to like it 🙂 I do, however, like your answers! And I am a very big Nora Roberts fan so this will be on my list asap (I’m surprised it wasn’t already!) Great post 🙂

It’s been warm here but we may get snow this week. I’m fine with there being snow for Christmas but after that – stop!! 😂
I’m always glad to see that there are other Nora Roberts fans out there! She follows a lot of the same plot timelines but she still makes every one of her books unique with amazing characters. The trilogy picture in the post is one of my favourite series of hers ever!

The Bear and the Nightingale and Harry Potter screams winter to me. Great list. Ever since I heard about it, I have been wanting to get my hands on The Bear and the Nightingale sadly never got the chance.

Once the snow hits I do what I call, “The Winter of Epic Fantasy.” I try to read as many epic fantasies as possible because the snow definitely adds to the feel of the book. Last year we had hardly any snow all winter though. =/

Same!! Winter is pretty much the only time I read epic fantasy – don’t know why!!! That and historical fiction. Even if epic fantasy isn’t set in a cold climate I still feel like it’s a better adventure….. I’m so glad I’m not the only one that thinks this way!

i grew up with a lot of snow and i do not like it. i am not a fan, because i live in the city now and after the first day of snow, everything is dirty and not wonderul white anymore. on the countryside at my parents, i don’t mind the snow. the atmosphere is nice.
haven’t read “the name of the wind” or “the bear and the nightingale” yet, but i definitely want to at some point 😀

I live in Maine so I hear you on the snow thing. I’m going to try to like it this year for my 2 year old, but it will be hard. 😬 Have you read Nora Robert’s In the Garden trilogy? It’s another set of paranormal books that was really good!

No I haven’t!! I’m going to need to check it out!
My 7 year old is obsessed with snow. I have no choice but to play in the snow with him so I know the feeling!

The cover alone for The Bear and the Nightingale looks cozy. I hope to read it this winter since everyone seems to be talking about it! I enjoy Nora Roberts paranormal series as well

I didn’t really plan on reading the Bear and the Nightingale but, like you said, everyone is talking about it! The writing is very descriptive and beautiful but because of that, it’s not something you can necessarily fly through. It’s great so far though. I hope you’ll love it when you get to it 🙂

I’m so jealous! It doesn’t snow here in the Philippines but it gets a little cold. The Bear and the Nightingale seems interesting! and I think I’d have to reread HP as well. I just love Hogsmeade when it’s snowing.

I second Harry Potter! And I’ll find out about The Book Thief early in the New Year (I better do it while it’s still cold out!)

The Book Thief is sooooo good! The movie is pretty good too but don’t watch it until you’ve read the book!

SO glad you have The Book Thief on your list! Great minds think alike haha! I thought people would think I was weird for putting it on my list because it is quite sad, but it’s so beautiful at the same time!

Lol we really are of the same mind today – I commented on your post almost the same thing!!! 😂 I was so afraid people would think I’m weird for adding that one!

I think it’s the general feel too, and I tend to like the magical element in my winter reads. I have Name of the Wind. Maybe I’ll try to get to it this winter! 🙂

Yeah, I’m a typical Torontonian. I love snow, except when I need to drive somewhere. Plus I am not looking forward to the massive slushy pools at every street corner after every thaw 😒.
If you liked The Book Thief as a cozy winter read, might I suggest David Benioff’s City of Thieves? Also set during WWII, it’s got a surprisingly uplifting ending. And after reading about the terrible winter the characters endure, any winter will seem pleasant by comparison!

Omg how did I forget about City Of Thieves?!? What’s wrong with me? It’s one of my favourite books of all time!
I didn’t realize you were so close to me. I’m in SW Ontario, about an hour or so away from London 🙂

Cool, I didn’t know you were practically local either – Southern Ontario represent!
Yeah, City of Thieves was a great read. It handles a pretty heavy topic with a light touch. Glad you liked it too!

Thank you for these!! I’m looking for wintery reads for this month so this is awesome 🙂 I’ll probably add The Bear and the Nightingale to my list now (I’ll leave The Name of the Wind for some later time… maybe when the author decides to finish the series? xD)
Great post, Shanah 🙂

I read Harry Potter, the entire series at least twice in the last year and I still love it. Well written, the movies a little disappointing. ‘In the name of the wind’ is in progress. For a little light winter reading may I suggest Molly Harper – The Naked werewolf series. Loved them 🙂

We had our first Belgian snow here last week and I cursed. Cursed. And CURSED.
It seriously came out of the blue, haha. Totally unprepared and pretty much fought with my car to get it decent to ride in…
Apaaart from that, HP definitely belongs on this list! I always want to reread those books during Winter but somehow I never do.. And this year isn’t going to be any different, haha. Oops.

We are supposed to get our first decent snowfall here next week. Not sure what to think of that yet! I’ll be excited that it’s close to Christmas but I still don’t like snow! Lol

Me neither! It’s all good when I’m inside but as soon as I have to take one step outside, that snow can go to hell..
The fact that I ALWAYS land on my butt at least one time when it’s snowed doesn’t really help the snow-love either. :’)

I’m totally accident prone in the snow too! But, to be honest, I’m accident prone on dry land too 😂

It snowed a little bit here yesterday so it was even better atmosphere. It’s a slow read for me though. I can’t read it that fast because I want to soak it all in. Enjoy 🙂
