Another month down, and another wrap up is on its way! I say that as if i’ve posted a wrap up on the blog in 2021 yet…….. shhhhhh! I’m doing it now and plan to for the rest of the year, so that statement counts lol.
As some of you may know, I’ve decided that my YouTube career has come to a close. I just couldn’t get the time to make the content that I would be proud of so I’m back to my stomping grounds of this blog A.K.A the place that makes me happy (literally as i’m typing this I got a new YouTube subscriber…. I really need to look into how to delete an account lol.)
It wasn’t my best reading month. In fact, it was my worst. We are on lockdown here in Ontario Canada again and my mental health has taken a turn. I’m surviving, but the focus isn’t there. And the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix isn’t helping matters much either! LOL! But i’m still going and hope that things will pick up in May. There are so many amazing books coming out in May and I know I’m going book shopping for my birthday, so there’s hope! Anyways, let’s get to the 4 books I finished this month:
THE LAST BOOK ON THE LEFT by Ben Kissel, Marcus Parks, Henry Zebrowski – 5 stars
Well if this wasn’t an epically fucked up way to start a province wide lockdown, I don’t know what is! If this group sounds familiar, the authors of this book are the very same people who run the true crime podcast, The last podcast on the left. This is THE podcast that got me into podcasts in the first place (how many times can I say podcast??). They’re a hilarious group of guys that talk about true crime events in a way that is both detailed, deranged, and hilarious. They don’t glorify the murderers but more so focus on the facts and just how evil these people are. Then, when shit gets REAL DARK, they throw in some humour to get your mind going in another direction.
This book is very much the same. We have a set of 7 or 8 serial killers stories throughout this book with some commentary sprinkled around their stories. Some of these serial killers include Ted Bundy, Son of Sam, John Wayne Gacy, and even Jeffery Dahmer. These are stories that i’m sure you’ve heard before, and you might think you know it all. You don’t. Trust me. These guys find a way to throw in some disturbing facts that you didn’t know and make your skin crawl with the detail of it all. It took me a while to get through this just because it is SO detailed. But damn it was good! If you like true crime, this is a must!
A MASTER OF DJINN by P. Djélí Clark – 5 stars!
Full review is over here —> https://bionicbookwormblog.wordpress.com/2021/04/19/a-master-of-djinn/
This book was SOOOO good! This author is SOOOOO good! This is his first full length novel, set to publish on May 11th. The other 2 works of his i’ve read so far were short stories that connected to this book. Those blew my mind with the things he could accomplish in only a few short pages. But having a full length novel was everything I hoped it would be and more! There’s magic, strong females, gods, a female/female relationship, and a Cairo of the past with some modern and steampunk elements. Since this doesn’t publish until mid May, I highly recommend checking out the prequel novella/short stories called A Dead Djinn in Cairo and The Haunting of Tram Car 015 while you wait!!! That way you’ll be prepared for the characters, the world, and a little of their back story. I honestly can’t rave about this book and author enough!
TALK BOOKISH TO ME by Kate Bromley – 4 stars
After such a whirlwind fantasy, I needed something a little more lighthearted and funny – I got that in spades with Talk Bookish to me! We have an enemies to lovers scenario when our main character is standing up in a wedding….. and so is her ex apparently. After being away for 10 years a lot has changed. Mainly them as people. But being apart for so long hasn’t stamped out their feelings. There were so many tropes in this book but it was SO WELL WRITTEN that you don’t even care! I LOVE this authors writing style so much I can’t even begin to describe it. This book doesn’t publish until the end of May, so you’re going to have to wait just a little longer for that review. I wouldn’t want to spoil it all here lol. Safe to say though – this book was written with bookworms in mind – and you’re all going to love it! Review coming soon 🙂
WITCHES STEEPED IN GOLD by Cannon Smart – 3 stars
And lastly we have a YA fantasy…. it’s been a while since i’ve read one of those…. and for good reason apparently. I literally just finished this so there’s no review yet (coming this week) but it’s safe to say that that it wasn’t quite enough to rekindle the flame of my relationship with YA fantasy. It was ok, but not great for me. I know that there are some of you out there that are going to go head over heels for this book, but it just wasn’t for me. I’ve been gravitation towards adult fantasy lately because they just seem more in depth, layered, and complicated. This cements that point when it comes to my reading tastes. More in depth thoughts coming your way soon.
Only 4 books to talk about and only 1 has a full review…… Sorry about that! The bottom two have reviews scheduled and the first is hard to review as it’s a non fiction story about serial killers… a little hard to write a review on that. I’m just glad that three out of the 4 books I read this month were just amazing! I’ll take quality over quantity every day of the week!
What was your favourite this month? A Master of Djinn was easily my favourite! He’s a new auto buy favourite author for me!!!
Until next time, happy reading!
