Is this title a little overdramatic? Maybe. But, with the state of the world right now, you have to admit that it’s all a little concerning and overwhelming. My small little town just announced yesterday that we have our first confirmed case of Covid-19. I didn’t think we were immune due to the fact that we are a small town. I knew that it was inevitable. But it happened a little quicker than expected I guess. With family members being at high risk and two small children, it’s scary my dudes. Not to mention the fact that we are business owners. One of them is a small store that’s attached to our house (I realize how strange that sounds), and the other is a fishing lure manufacturing company. We are still operating right now but we know that things can change in a heartbeat. If things go south there is no guarantee that we will bounce back. See what I mean by dumpster fire now? Yeah. The world is a scary place full of unknowns right now. The only thing I can do is stay positive, take comfort in the small things, appreciate the extra time with family, and forget about all the bad things by reading more books! So I thought I would make a little list of books that might help take your mind off things for a while….
First we have SORCERY OF THORNS by Margaret Rogerson. This isn’t the most mind blowing fantasy ever written but damn it this was a fun read!! There was something about this book that made me absolutely fly through it! It covers all the bases of emotion and is one hell of an adventure! Next is THE CITY OF BRASS by S.A. Chakraborty. This one is hands down that mind blowing fantasy I was talking about! The writing was so rich and glorious! The picture the world painted was beautiful, the character were entrancing, and the story has magic, gods, and it felt so big! Lastly I recommend EVERY HEART A DOORWAY by Seanan McGuire – and for a few reasons. One – the books are small! They are about 200 pages in length so you can get through it fast. But it also has some of the best characters and worlds (yes, plural) i’ve ever read!
SCIENCE FICTION RECOMMENDATIONS:
Holy shit! This one was difficult to come up with! Every time I thought of a book I realized that it was full of death, sickness, and the world ending. Apparently I have a preference in science fiction novels! STARFLIGHT by Melissa Landers is another one that’s just so much freaking fun to read! This was a book that caught me off guard by how much fun I had while reading! It was one hell of a ride!! ILLUMINAE by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman might not be the best recommendation…. there’s a whole world ending and sickness that takes out hundreds of people thing going on. But still – the drama that unfolds is fast paced and entertaining as all hell!! DARK MATTER by Blake Crouch is another one that’s not all sunshine and rainbows. In fact, there are some things that happen that might even make our situation look like childs play. But it’s a book that I bet you won’t be able to put down when you start it!
I myself have fallen down a bit of a romance rabbit hole lately. It’s been a HUGE help for my reading because it allows me to reset. Something cute, light, fluffy, adorable, and funny. WELL MET by Jen DeLuca is about two people who hate each other while working together at a Renaissance Faire. I loved the faire setting so much and the hate to love relationship was exactly what I needed. TRUTH OR BEARD by Penny Reid is one of my more recent reads and I liked it so much that I started the second one a couple days ago! The family and friend aspect of this series was everything!!!! And lastly, we have AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT by Tara Sivec which is probably my favourite romance series of ALL TIME! This series is all about girl power and had me laughing so hard I snorted. I’m not a sort laugher but dammed if I didn’t a few times during this book!!
This list was far more difficult to make than I thought it was going to be! I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction and almost all of those are based on death, sickness, and the world falling apart. There might still be a little bit of that in these books but they’re all so fast paced and entertaining you won’t even notice. While the world is practicing social distancing, I hope that we all take the opportunity to read a little more and escape the insanity for a while. Stay safe and healthy everyone!
Until next time, happy reading!
