TRUTH OR BEARD (Winston Brothers #1)

My rating – 5 stars
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.
His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…
But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.
Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk? Find it on Goodreads
This was the case of the right book at the right time – I LOVED IT! I’ve been struggling with a lot of emotions and chaos over the last week and this was the perfect book to take my mind off everything. It was just the right amount of funny (I had no idea how much I needed the humour right now), the right amount of sweetness and sass, drama that took away from my own chaos, and a relationship and characters that I fell in love with! A friend of mine has been telling me for months (ok, fine, it was years possibly) to read this. She essentially curated it for me specifically because she knew I would fall in love. You were right Robin. Why did I wait so long!?
Jessica was such a great character! She moved back home and accepted a temporary teaching position for a few years so she could save money. Travelling the world is her only true passion and she’s only got eyes for the prize. She is dedicated and loving BUT she keeps her relationships fast and loose – why attach to people when you’re planning on leaving and travelling the world? But then her childhood crush takes her by surprise and suddenly shows interest, forcing her to reconsider her lifelong dream. Can she have her cake and eat it too?
Duane was so amazing! But yet – he pissed me off! LOL! He’s very traditional – when he picked up Jess for a date he insisted on bringing her mother flowers and shaking her fathers hand. He did so much to protect Jessica – made sure she got what she wanted and what she deserved. He also had to protect himself. Jess was very clear from the get go that she had zero plans to stay in their small town. But, as their relationship grew more series and they realized just how suited they were, the were both forced to take a look at what this meant for their future…. and if they really had one. Do you continue a passionate relationship when you know it has a time limit? Do you hope for the best? He had to do things to protect his own heart and still think of hers. It was sooooo complicated! Part of me loved that he was so thoughtful of her – it was sweet as hell! But at the same time I wanted to shake him and yell “seize her and the moment for god sakes!!!”
Actually, all the characters were fantastic! Except for maybe Tina. She needs to catch every single STD available to the human race and take a flying leap off a mountain. I hate that bitch! But the Winston brothers – I want them to be real people and I want to hang out eating pie and drinking beer! As much as I liked Duane, Cletus was hands down my favourite! He was hilarious! I thought at first that he was absolutely clueless. As it turns out though, he’s VERY calculated with both his words and actions and is always 5 steps ahead of the situation. They’re all big burly men but they’re so in tune with others feelings. I’ve heard that book 3 is a book all about Cletus – I can’t wait!
This is a very graphic romance book – you’ve been warned! In fact, this has one of the raciest first chapters ever and that’s what completely sold me on this book! It jumps right in and throws you into the sex and relationships. It was pretty intense! That sort of falls away a little bit as they navigate their relationship and decide where they’re going to go with each other. Hesitance creeps in and they wonder if that connection will be too much for them to eventually let go.
This book is really perfect to reset. Something that’s not too involved or intense. You can fall into the story of two people and just enjoy being in the moment with them. And it has everything you could want! All sorts of different relationships and friendships, character development, romance that’s sassy sweet and swoon worthy….. I can’t wait to continue with this series!!
Until next time, happy reading!
