Weekly Wrap Up – Jan 27 – Feb 2

This was quite the interesting week! I read (and loved) a non fiction, and I also decided to DNF a book…. both of these things are very rare for me! I almost never read non fiction. The ones that I’ve read in the past have been comedy based but this was about a historical event. And then there’s the DNF….. which is going to be quite controversial I think!! It was one of my most anticipated of 2019 and one that I thought could have been 5 stars. I’m still fighting with the decision….. it’s a struggle!!! Is there anyone else out there who hates not finishing a book?? I wish it could be easier…. I could save a lot of time! lol Let’s get into the book i’ve finished and started this week:

BOOKS I FINISHED THIS WEEK:

I’ll start with the book that I actually read – and that’s MIDNIGHT IN CHERNOBYL by Adam Higginbotham. This is the non fiction I mentioned that I ended up rating 5 stars! I loved it! It was informative without being dry and boring. Being that I’ve learned a lot about Chernobyl over the last year, I was familiar with most of it, but it still had so much that took me by surprise. If you’re at all interested in Chernobyl and looking to learn a little more, this is the one you need to pick up! Review coming soon. And then there’s THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alix E Harrow……. and this is the one I DNF’d….. and I’m still not ok with it!! I fully expected to love this one! I anticipated it being 5 starts actually! But, 100 pages into it, I couldn’t care less about any of it. I don’t know why! I wasn’t a fan of the story, the characters, and, most of all, the writing, I may come back to it at some point. I’m highly undecided.

BOOKS I’M CURRENTLY READING:

I’ve got quite a lot of work to do this week so I thought I would pick up a new audiobook. It’s been a while! So I picked up THE SHINING by Stephen King. I made a tiny goal to myself to read a few more King books this year. So many people told me that this one is quite different than the movie – some say better and some say worse. Time will tell. And I also picked up FOUNDRYSIDE by Robert Jackson Bennett and holy shit!!!! I’m only onto chapter 8 but I’m freaking obsessed with this book!! A female thief who finds a talking key and a magic system that is one of the most unique that i’ve ever read….. I didn’t want to stop reading!! I was exhausted so I couldn’t read too long last night but I really want to get a big chunk of this read today!!

OTHER BOOKISH NEWS:

TOP 5 TUESDAY:

It was another big week for Top 5 Tuesday! I released the TOPICS FOR FEBRUARY and i’m very excited for them! It’s going to be hard to narrow it down to just 5! This week we looked ahead to our top 5 anticipated books of 2020 –  it’s shaping up to be a damn good year!! Next week I’m prepared to “spill the tea” and talk about the books that weren’t what I was expecting. You can take this in either a positive light or a negative one – which ever works for you. But remember, the week after that, we will be talking about the books that exceeded expectations – just in case you didn’t want to have your choices overlap 🙂

I wish I had more new and interesting things to talk about but, my bookish life (and real life too) have been fairly uneventful. I don’t mind though! I’m in the mood to read anything and everything right now so I’m thankful for the down time! I’m especially happy that 2020 seems to be the year of epic fantasy for me – bring it on!!

Are you reading anything good this week?

Until next time, happy reading!

If you know why you DNFed something, I don’t think you should go back. I think if you know why, that means the author or book just didn’t click with you, which is completely fine. We can’t all like and read the same things. If you DNF something and don’t know why, I think that’s a time to go back because it may have been just a mood thing.

    1. There’s a very high chance I won’t get back to it. I think it’s the writing style that got me down. I don’t DNF often so this is weird territory for me 😂 I’m a mood reader so that could have something to do with it too

    1. You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that. I mean, it sucks you didn’t like it either BUT it makes me feel like I’m not alone. I felt like I was missing something. But the writing was just…. odd 😂
FOUNDRYSIDE!! Yes! Please read it. It’s so freaking good! It’s one of the most fast paced fantasy’s I’ve ever read! I’m almost on page 300 and it still hasn’t stopped!
