Top 5 Books I Didn’t Get To In 2019

A year seems like a long time…… until you get to the end of it and realize that there were so many books that you didn’t read yet! Though I’ve read nearly 90 books this year, there were quite a few that I swore I was going to get to and then never did. You’ll notice that all of them are fantasy – that wasn’t planned. But, for some reason, I fell into a bit of a fantasy slump this year and all the books I couldn’t wait to read suddenly intimidated the hell out of me! Here are 5 books that made me disappointed in myself lol!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in December – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

The ten thousand doors of january

THE TEN THOUSAND DOORS OF JANUARY by Alix E. Harrow

Based on the cover and hype alone, this was going to be one that I read as soon as it was released. I’ve heard that it’s a portal fantasy (which i’ve read a few of this year!) and i’ve heard it’s amazing! I kept putting it off, and putting it off…… and then I finally admitted defeat and decided to read it in January. I know – the book has nothing to do with the month – January is a person – but it just feels right lol

Record of a spaceborn few

RECORD OF A SPACEBORN FEW by Becky Chambers

A few years ago I read the first book in this series and fell in love. Her world and characters are like nothing i’ve ever experienced before! Problem was – the second book I didn’t like AT ALL. It was so different from book one and I didn’t like the people it followed and the atmosphere. I think I put this one off because I was afraid.

Into the drowning deep

INTO THE DROWNING DEEP by Mira Grant

I picked this one up just after Christmas last year and was so excited about it! I didn’t realize that Mira Grant is Seanan McGuire. As soon as I found that out I was sold completely. But it’s the subject matter that interests me the most. It deals with the Mariana’s Trench, a crew lost at sea while recording a “mockumentary” and deep sea exploration. I need this in my life!!

To kill a kingdom

TO KILL A KINGDOM by Alexandra Christo

If there’s one book that I’m most embarrassed that I didn’t get to this year – this is it. This book is SO HYPED by so many people. It’s not the hype that makes me interested – it’s the fact that these people aren’t ones I would assume would like it. They didn’t just like it…. they loved it! And I need to know why!

the fifth season

THE FIFTH SEASON by N.K. Jemisin

I need another fantasy series like I need a hole in my head, but this is one that I hope happens soon in 2020! The buzz about this series is constant. I have my eye on the bind up of the whole trilogy which is this MASSIVE tome with the greatest, floppiest pages!!! This might actually show up in my top 5 post next week…..

Now that I’m looking at this list, I’m really in the mood for all of them! I hope I can make them top of my priority list for 2020!

To all the participants – I will do my best to update the list as soon as possible. I have a doctors appointment in the morning and I can hopefully find a way to deal with this pain. And then in the afternoon I have a TON of work to do to ship out orders. I’ll update, but can’t guarantee I’ll have time to comment.

What are 5 books that you didn’t get to this year?

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. Great list! I didn’t manage to get to The 10K Doors of January either and I bought my first Becky Chambers’ books recently so I’m really keen to get to it in 2020! Happy reading 🙂

I didn’t get to any of the YA Fantasy new releases because of my romance kick, including Ninth House, Sorcery of Thorns and To Kill A Kingdom. Hoping I’ll get back to YA a little next year!

  8. Yikes! I feel called out 😂 I haven’t read Ten Thousand Doors yet. I tried picking it up a while back but I was in a bad reading slump at the time so I could barely get past the first few pages…
