Top 5 Books I’d Rewrite

Multiple warnings here folks. First warning – spoilers galore! I was trying to figure out how to do this without spoilers and, honestly, it wouldn’t work. I wouldn’t be able to explain why I wanted to rewrite them. If there is a book on this list that you plan to read then DO NOT read past the picture! You’ve been warned! The second warning – this isn’t me saying “Hey authors! You didn’t do it right the first time so I want to do it properly myself.” I’m not that much of an asshole! I’m also not dumping on the book/author for their choices. I’m just saying that I wanted more of something or imagine it going in a different direction. This was a tough one but I enjoyed the challenge!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in November – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

They Both Die At The EndTHEY BOTH DIE AT THE END by Adam Silvera

When I think of rewriting a book, this is the first book I think of. I know they both die at the end. The title kind of prepared us for that event. As much as I didn’t want it to happen, and it ripped my heart to tattered bloody shreds, it the way they died that I would rewrite. They spent this whole book together. They made this meaningful, deep, and beautiful connection with each other. I was hoping for a peaceful ending knowing that they were loved. But that definitely didn’t happen. I appreciate why it happened that way but…… damn it!

FinaleFINALE by Stephanie Garber

Raging unpopular opinion on it’s way in 3, 2, 1…….

This book was such a disappointment. It felt like it dragged on, it focused mainly on romance and relationships than the magic, and it felt unnecessary. I wish that I could rewrite books 2 and 3 and combine them to make this a duology. What I loved most about book 1 was the magic, suspension of reality, and questioning what was real or a part of the game. Books 2 and 3 deferred from that quite a bit. If books 2 and 3 were combined then the pace would be even and all the details that weren’t needed could be edited out.

ShadowsongSHADOWSONG by S. Jae-Jones

Wintersong, which is the first book to the duology, is one of my favourite romances I’ve ever read in a fantasy. EVER. There was something so magical, pure, and passionate about it. I know it’s not a lot of peoples favourites but, for some reason, it grabbed ahold of me and wouldn’t let go. I hoped for more of their relationship. Navigating the balance of mortality and immortality. Accepting that their forbidden love is something that needs to be fought for. But the Goblin King wasn’t a part of this book at all!!! Ok, maybe for like 5 minutes….. This focused mainly on the female character easing back into her life as a mortal girl in the real world. And I was bored to tears. I would rewrite this all about their romance!

The last two books i’m going to mention together as the only things that I would really change about them is the endings. I HATED the endings for both of these! THE NIGHT FILM by Marisha Pessl had an ok ending. I guess that I understood the ending and why it happened the way it did. It just didn’t fit the atmosphere of the whole book. And with ALLEGIANT by Veronica Roth………. do I really need to explain why I hated the ending of that one?? The hardcover still has dent marks from when I threw it across the room when I finished it…..

  1. I give you props for making it through all three Caraval books. I wanted to strangle all the characters in book one!!! Everyone loves it to much and I just wanted to scream.

Also, Allegiant, hell yes. I was so mad I refused to watch any of the movies and I felt so betrayed I won’t read any of her other books. It was, legit, upsetting.

    Great list!

    1. Ugh the characters in the Caraval series were SO annoying!!! Especially Tella. She was a spoiled brat! And Scarlet was spineless…..

I watched the first movie and actually liked it. I refused to go any further though. A friend of mine was reading the series and I warned her that she’s going to hate it in the end. She texted me at 1am with a string of profanity and I laughed so hard. I warned her she would hate it! 😂

      1. This is amazing. I hated Tella and Scarlet SO MUCH. I read it while I was on vacation and I was like, where can I abandon this book?

  2. Please rewrite Finale. I’d be completely on board with that. It felt like it wasn’t part of the trilogy it was written so differently. The other two focused so much on the magic and the game and the third one just took a sharp turn into left field.

    1. Exactly! It felt like it was written by a completely different person. It was like she got bored or committed to a trilogy and had no clue where to take it….

No you don’t need to explain Allegiant! I nearly added that one to my list but chose The Last Star instad (for the same reason) ! Here is my link http://bewareofthereader.com/books-id-re-write-and-why-or-when-shanah-made-me-sweat-top-5-tuesday-11-19-2019/

  6. Ugh, I had successfully repressed the memory of Allegiant. That entire book is a disaster.

As you know, I wimped out of answering this one, Shanah 😉 you certainly don’t shy away from the tricky topics! Lol! I am looking forward to reading everyone’s posts though.
