Reading Progress 2019 – Success or Fail?

With less than 2 months to go until we reach 2020, I’ve started seeing posts and videos where people are reflecting on their reading for 2019. This is where us bookworms start to freak out about reaching Goodreads goals (which i’ve totally CRUSHED by the way!) and start looking back to see what they want to read before the end of the year. These posts and videos sparked a reminder in my brain……. hey, didn’t I do a top 5 post talking about the top 5 books I wanted to read in 2019? Yes! I absolutely did!

Off I go to find that post……….

And was I ever in for a surprise! I wrote the post in the second week of January and must have immediately forgot what I put on that list. That’s the only conclusion that I’ve come to. Turns out – I’ve only read ONE book from that list………. ONE. What in the world happened?? lol

The lies of Locke Lamora

Let’s start with the book that I actually read. THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA by Scott Lynch is actually one of my favourite reads of the year! This was an easy 5 stars and I loved every minute of it. It was clever, hilarious, and full of adventure and great characters. Sadly I haven’t picked up the sequel yet. Maybe that will be on the list for 2020…..

The next two books on the list I actually tried to read but set them aside. I do plan to get back to these at some point though. I managed to get to page 76 of A LITTLE LIFE by Hanya Yanagihara but I wasn’t in the right mood or headspace for it. I couldn’t focus on the story and it made it hard to keep the characters and their lives straight. This is a very character driven book and I’ve been told their lives spark a lot of emotion. I have a feeling that this will be a 5 star read so I need to make sure i’m in the right mood for it. I also got 50-100 pages into THE UNSEEN WORLD by Liz Moore but had to set it aside for an ARC that needed to be read by a certain date. I just never picked it back up again. Soon I hope for both of these…….. (which is precisely what I said back in January, but…..)

The next two books on the list I haven’t read for two reasons. And those books are THE WAY OF KINGS by Brandon Sanderson and THE BLACK PRISM by Brent Weeks. First of all, I was in a bit of a weird fantasy slump on and off this year. It’s normally my favourite genre but I really struggled to get into it sometimes. The second reason – they’re massive! No, big books don’t intimidate me. I actually LOVE a long book! I feel that they immerse you into the story and characters sometimes! But, when you’re dealing with one that’s over 1,000 pages and the other is around 650 pages, I was afraid to start a book if I wasn’t sure I could devote the time to it. This was a crazy year for ARC’s which obviously take priority. I sometimes only had a few days to devote to a book before I had to start thinking about the next ARC.

The title of this was success or failure. As you can see, this list was a total fail! I’m completely caught up on my ARC’s and don’t have anything to read for publishers so I can actually dedicate some time to back listed books. Can I read any of these before the year’s up? I don’t know. Time will tell!

Are there any books that you really wanted to read in 2019? Did you get to them? I’d love to know!

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. I totally know what you mean about big books! I love them, but there’s always the voice in the back of my head saying “but you could read three “regular” sized books in the time it takes you to finish one!” I’ve started just mentally blocking out ahead of time when I’m going to read them, usually when I see there’s a lull in ARC commitments coming. Knowing ahead of time that “Okay, July is the month you read WORDS OF RADIANCE, that’s the priority” just helps get me in the right headspace.

The way of kings and The black prism were also on my list! I’m very happy that I read the way of kings, it was so good! But still have to pick up the black prism as well!
I should read the lies of Locke Lamora, it sounds so good!

  3. There are quite a few books I haven’t gotten to that I was really excited to read. I’m hoping to squeeze at least one of them in.

  4. Ooooof. I am a bit scared to go and find that post!! I can totally relate to the weird fantasy slump of 2019 though. I can’t believe how little fantasy I read compared to other years. It’s basically criminal!!

    1. Criminal is the right word! I’ve picked up more fantasy toward the end of the year. I hope your 2020 year is all the fantasy lol

  5. I love this idea – I wasn’t in blogging in Jan 2019, but in 2020 I am totally going to write down a list of books I plan to read so I can watch and laugh as I totally fail by December!
