Weekly Wrap Up – September 2 – 8

This was a really fantastic week personally – for books? Not so much. So this was my kids first week back to school. It’s also my daughters first year in high school and I was terrified she would hate it. Slowly we entered this sort of Twilight Zone with her…… she seemed to be happy! Then on Thursday there was this spark of light in the sky and then the sky fell down because……. she admitted that she loves school!!! EEEKK! What? I hope this continues when she realizes that the work load in high school is tough. Time will tell!

Then, I had my appointment with my endocrinologist this week for my 3 year follow up. My anxiety is out of control no matter what I do. I always fear that the thyroid cancer will come back (no, I don’t have a thyroid anymore but it can return through your lymph nodes). But this appointment was the best one yet! I think we finally have the right thyroid hormone dosage, and my cancer levels are officially the LOWEST they’ve been since the surgery!!!!!! Officially 3 years in the clear! 2 more and I reach the 5 year hurdle.

I also had my first full week baking out at a restaurant and it was glorious! I love to bake and being in a restaurant kitchen is a dream come true. Yes, it’s hard work, and no, I didn’t need something else when I already have 2 full time jobs, etc, but it feels good and is relaxing!

So yeah! That was personally……. but the books……. not so much…….

A treason of thorns

Well that’s a lie – no, I didn’t finish this book. And have no plans to finish it either. Deciding to DNF this book was hard. The cover is stunning, the synopsis sounds so good, and the writing was fantastic!!! But – magical realism just isn’t my thing. Like I said, I really liked her writing style but I just can’t get over the plot holes and confusing nature of magical realism. The House was alive and used its magic to care for the land, and then the family cares for the House. I spend the whole time i’m reading magical realism rolling my eyes and asking questions. I want to know why!! I want information! I don’t understand why the House is doing these things! Why does it need to be this way? Not for me. DNF.

First of all – YES! I decided to do a Harry Potter series reread! I needed some heartwarming epic magic in my life.

And then there’s A Little Life by Joe Abercrombie – and this is a VERY unique experience. I requested this book because I’d heard so much about the author and this was the first book in a new series……. I thought it was safe…… apparently not. So apparently this book is related to a previous series and there are events and people that were mentioned before. I can tell. I’m only 50 pages in and I feel like I was thrown into the middle of a story and now i’m playing catch up. I’ve even resorted to writing notes as to who is who and what they have to do with each other. I’m enjoying it while i’m reading it (some of the lines were so funny I snort laughed!!!) but I have zero motivation to pick it up. PLEASE HELP!!!! Should I find a spoiler recap of the previous series? Would that help? Bueller?

This was a fun week! And it was so much easier adding people to the list with my kids in school! We talked about the Top 5 series I need to finish and I totally felt the shame and shade from these! Glad that I wasn’t alone in needing to finish so many series though! Next week is top 5 covers of 2019!! Prepare to feast your eyes folks!

That’s it. I feel like I’m winning the life game and failing the book game. Things may change though – this week coming up is super busy so I may hate my life at the end of next week lol!

Until next time, happy reading!

Yay for being clear for three years! If you had to choose between winning at life and winning the book game – always go for life 😉 Have a great week!

I would say that you could carry on reading A Little Hatred without prior knowledge but… well, so much is linked back to the First Law Trilogy that you may want to check those out! I loved the audiobooks and there are definitely snort-laugh worthy lines in all Abercrombie’s books!

  8. Congrats on 3 years of clear results! Fingers crossed for two more!

I definitely skipped A Little Hatred as I haven’t read any of First Law (something I’m hoping to rectify in the coming year). Best of luck with that one!

It’s funny, I really really think its hard to understand what’s going on in A Little Hatred without the context of the other books.if you don’t mind the grimness, definitely go back to the originals if you’re interested! They’re so good and he’s so funny and so bleak.

    1. I’m a ways into the book and I’m just going with the flow. Still a little lost and confused. Mainly because there are SO MANY perspectives!! I think there’s 6 or 7? I know who they are and how they related now, but I was taking notes. I love his writing and how dark and grim it is! But I think I’ll read the first series first and then reread this one
