First Impression Friday #31

Well, I’m not going to lie when I say that I wished this post would have had more books to talk about! Both of these books were finished during the Off The Grid Readathon, but I haven’t had the chance to read much since. Work has been getting in the way of reading but I don’t mind when it means we are completely caught up! This has been one of the most productive work weeks we’ve had in a long time! So, I can’t really complain. Here are the two books that I’ve finished over the last 2 weeks, what I thought of them when I first started them compared to how I rated them:

Jade city

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – This book was one of the best first chapters ever! It immediately throws you into the story, lays out some possibilities, and makes you want to speed read so you can figure out how it all plays out! We meet two people working for a restaurant frequented by men who have magic that’s fuelled by jade. Also within that first chapter we see these two people try to pull off a heist and take the jade from the person wearing it….. it was an action packed introduction and I needed to know more!!! I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars……

HOW I RATED IT – Well close – kinda. The fast pace in the beginning slowed down quite a bit and I was weighed down with all the writing and unnecessary details. BUT – this was still a REALLY unique and interesting book! The magic, the jade economy, the hierarchy of the two major clans in the area – it was all so interesting! I ended up rating it 4 stars. The Chalk Man

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – After reading the first chapter I wasn’t swayed one way or the other. I enjoyed the writing style, but it didn’t give me enough of an impression to really form an opinion. It still really wanted to know more though. I guessed that I would rate this 3 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Luckily this book really picked up as it moved along! It’s a book that slowly creeps up on you and throws you for spins that you don’t expect. It wasn’t a perfect book, but it was interesting and threw me for turns I didn’t see coming. I ended up rating it 4 stars. Click HERE to see my complete thoughts and spoiler free review.

Aside from the AMAZING first chapter of Jade City, the last two weeks have been kind of quiet for reading. Work has been getting in the way a bit BUT it’s so productive I can’t be all that mad about it!

Until next time, happy reading!
