Top 5 Debut Novels!

Is it just me, or have the debut novels over the last 2 years been outstanding or what?! I remember being overly cautious of debut novels. I felt like authors needed a little bit of time to find their writing groove….. but not lately! There have been some really amazing debuts lately, and I think it’s time they get some additional time in the spotlight!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in June – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

City of Brass

When I read The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty I had no clue that it was a debut. Within the first 2 chapters, I was so drawn into the world and the characters it was crazy! The more I read, the more I became completely obsessed with her writing! She’s so balanced between world building, character development, and plot movement…. I can”t believe that this was the first one!

The hate you give

The fact that The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a debut STILL boggles my mind! When I think of the name Angie Thomas, I imagine a list of titles behind her name. But no. This woman has only published two books so far! And she came out of the gate swinging! I think that actually getting to meet her, listen to just how smart and strong she is, makes her writing even better. She’s an absolute doll!! And damn is she smart!

Children of blood and bone

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi is probably the most hyped book out since i’ve joined the bookish community. It was SO hyped that I was actually afraid that it wouldn’t live up to it. I thought that there wasn’t a chance in hell that this debut could be as good as they said it was…… well, I was wrong! And it was! Book 2 is almost here!!!

the-walled-city

Ryan Graudin is one of my all time favourite authors. I didn’t start with The Walled City. I actually started reading her books with the Wolf by Wolf duology. But, when I went back to books she wrote previously, I found this gem….. and I actually preferred it over the Wolf by Wolf series! If you’ve ever read and liked a Ryan Graudin novel, read her debut! It was absolutely stunning and I still think about it constantly!

HP and the philosophers stone

And, last but not least, do I need to remind you all that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling is a debut?! It’s incredible to think that the first book that she wrote turned into this massive world that have reached so many. This is also the book that I’ve read more than any other in the world….. I swear I must be reaching close to 20 times!!

I seriously considered putting HP on my list, too. But I opted for some other ones. But it’s definitely a crazy thought that Sorcerer’s Stone was her first book!!! She knocked it out of the park!

Children of Blood and Bone made my list too. I still can’t believe that it was a debut – it felt like it was an established author’s work to me! I still really need to read City of Brass, I’ve been wanting to read it since it came out but I’ve never had a chance to pick it up.

    1. If you liked Children of Blood and Bone then I imagine you would like City of Brass just as much!! They’re kind of similar. I actually did a post comparing the two. I’m not sending this to you for a view, but I really think it will motivate you to read it 🙂 – https://bionicbookwormblog.wordpress.com/2018/11/09/if-you-like-this-then-17/

  13. Interesting wonder how many great debuts lead to series compared to being ‘one hit wonders’. For example anyone read any Andy Weir after the Martian 👽? If so are they as good?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I LOVED Andy Weir’s second book! Almost as much as I liked The Martian. But most people didn’t like it.

I completely forget that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was JK Rowling’s debut. Crikey, that feels like half a century ago now.
