May 2019 Wrap Up!

I feel like May was the game changer month. I’ve been in the depths of a reading slump for what feels like FOREVER! I had lost my desire to devour books and everything I was reading was a struggle to get into. It’s only been the last week or two where I’ve felt back to my reading self, so hopefully next month will be great! It’s a busy one though, so…. keeping positive anyways lol! So let’s see what the 8 books I read this month are:

The test

THE TEST by Sylvain Neuvel <—– click for full review – 4 stars
The first book I read this month is also the shortest book I’ve read this year! Coming in at a whopping 112 pages, this one packs a serious punch for such a small thing! It didn’t have the deep science fiction elements that I loved so much about the Themis Files trilogy, but there was still a major science fiction plot point. I didn’t know what to expect going into this book – but i’ve come to realize that there’s no way to expect anything with this author!

Winter of the witch

THE WINTER OF THE WITCH by Katherine Arden <—– click for full review – 5 stars
It’s with a twinkle in my eye, and a loving sigh in my heart that I say “I love this series!!!!!” This book wrapped up this series in such a perfect, pretty, good feeling little package. There was something about the atmosphere and the magic in this book that makes me immediately think of the word whimsical. I need more from Katherine Arden ASAP!

Aurora rising

Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff <—– click for full review – 5 stars
This is my favourite author duo on the planet so of course I was going to love it! This was one hell of a space adventure! I loved the characters and the dynamic between them all. I also loved the confusion of a possible cover up. Certain elements all totally gave me the creeps! This was as great as I expected it would be!

Dark shores

DARK SHORES by Danielle L. Jensen <—– click for full review – 4 stars
Omg the writing style! I’m still in awe as to how her writing style seemed to meld with me and we became one lol. There was lady pirates, soldiers, magic, secrets, and so much more! Though I do wish we had some answers at the end of this book. Even just closure on any tiny thing! Even though it left so much open, it’s only making me want book 2 even more!

Birthday

BIRTHDAY by Meredith Russo <—– click for full review – 3.75 stars
I actually enjoyed this one a little more than I expected to! It was a beautiful story and an eye opening read for sure! I did struggle with a few elements though (which I explain in my full review), and those things made it harder for me to rate it just a little higher. This story will stick with me for a long time though!

The haunted

THE HAUNTED by Danielle Vega <—– click for full review – 4 stars
Oh, now this was a creepy ghost story!!! A few days after finishing it, I’m still finding myself going back to the story and the descriptions, remembering the things she saw and the things that happened in that house! I think it was the ending that really cemented my love for this one! I didn’t enjoy the friend group though. The girls were useless mean girls… not my cup of tea.

Red white and royal blue

RED, WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE by Casey McQuiston <—– click for full review – 500 stars!
I know I just finished this, but I already want to reread it! This is a book that I’ll be rereading FOR SURE in the future!! I loved the characters, the romance, the EVERYTHING! I’m NOT a fan of the cover AT ALL but damn this book was good!!!!

When we were lost

WHEN WE WERE LOST by Kevin Wignall – review to come
This isn’t the book for me. I wanted to love it. I really did! But there’s something about it that I’m just not liking. I have a feeling this review will be a struggle….. but probably not as large of a struggle as finishing this has been!!

Those are the books I read in May! I only wish that I could have had more time to read towards the end of the month! Now that my reading slump is over, I want to read ALL the books! Problem is – I’m too busy! But I’m coming for you books. I will read all of you!!!! Hope your month was amazing!!!!

Until next time, happy reading!

  7. I also received a copy of ‘When We Were Lost’ and it was actually a DNF for me. There was something off with it, and I tried to read it on and off for 3 weeks, but I couldn’t get into the story. Props to you for pushing through!
