First Impression Friday #27

It’s been quite a while since i’ve done this post! I missed out on it 2 weeks ago because of a reading slump….. I just didn’t have too much to mention. But now that I’m back to reading again, I can finally get back to one of my favourite posts!! I have 4 books to talk about today. All 4 of them had AMAZING beginnings! So let’s get into my first impressions:

First Impression Friday is a post that was created by the brilliant Joe from J.W. Martin – Storeys of Stories Instead of doing this weekly like he does, I decided to do this one biweekly. So every two weeks, I take the books that I’ve finished within that time period, and I compare my first impressions (from the first 1-2 chapters) with my final thoughts and how I rated it. Here are my first impressions of the books I’ve read in the last 2 weeks:

Winter of the witch

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – As much as I loved the second book in this series, I had high hopes that it would return to the whimsical and magical atmosphere that we got in book one. The first chapter wasn’t enough to go on, but I feared that it wouldn’t bring us back to the world with the Winter King and all the creatures that she could talk to. I guessed that I would rate this 4 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – My rating of this one is a little weird! At first I rated it 4 stars. But I ended up changing it to 5 stars after some thought. When I compared this to the second book, this one had everything that I was hoping for. It was a little bit slower, but I think I may have appreciated that more! I wanted less action, secrets, and fighting, and I wanted more mythology, magic, and atmosphere. I definitely got that! Click HERE for the full review.

A Thousand years to wait

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Within the first chapter I was totally hooked! This first chapter was one of my favourite first chapters ever! We meet our character, learn a lot about her, find out a prophecy, and figure out what to expect from the rest of the story. I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Close! I ended up rating it 4.5 stars. This was really fantastic! A great slow burning fantasy with AMAZING characters and a prophecy that kept returning throughout the story. Did I mention that I LOVE books that have a prophecy?! It tells you what’s going to happen yet when they’re interpreted there’s always a grey area. I knocked out a half star because it was a little slow in the middle, but other than that – this was GREAT! Click HERE for the full spoiler free review!

The test

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Hmmmmm this first chapter was weird! In fact, the whole book was weird. But that fits my personality 100%. The first chapter gave us some insight into the character and also promised a lot of action and chaos. I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Also close! I ended up rating it 4 stars. This was a super short book (less than 200 pages) and it kept me guessing the whole way through. It never once stopped to take a breath and I was on the edge of my seat while reading. My only 2 problems were that it wasn’t long enough (I wanted to keep reading!!) and the ending wasn’t what I expected. Click HERE for the full spoiler free review!

Aurora rising

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS –Yeah, so, i’ve come to realize something…. as much as I love Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, their books are hard to get into. This isn’t a bad thing though! They have a tendency to throw you headfirst into the story with very little background. It does, however, take some time to figure out what’s happening and who’s who. Regardless of not knowing what was happening in the first chapter, I still guessed that this would be 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Of course it was 5 stars! It’s my 2 favourite authors! I smiled and laughed the whole way through. I was also reading as fast as possible to figure out how things would play out and THEN I was absolutely creeped out when we got to that part! Click HERE for the full review.

The moral of the story with this edition of First Impression Friday? I was really good at figuring out what I was going to rate my books! So many great books over the last little while has really helped squash my reading slump! I feel like my reading is in an upswing….. let’s hope this continues!

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. I’m going to be finishing Aurora Rising today sometime. While I am really enjoying it I’m not enjoying it as much as the Illuminae Files trilogy. Something is just missing for me and I’m not really sure what it is. So far there hasn’t really been anything that has wowed me. But I do love it.
