If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, then you will know that I’m totally in love with science fiction and books set in space!!! So much so, that i’ve decided that my list will be a top eight! I couldn’t narrow it down! Sadly though, i’ve been experiencing a bit of a sci-fi slump lately, so you haven’t seen to many of this genre around here in a while. In a way, this topic was selfish. I’m hoping that talking about my favourites, and reading your lists, will reignite by passion and drive to get back to it!
Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in April – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!
The first two i’m listing are from the same author – and they’re two of my favourites! The Martian is about a man who was left on Mars by his crew when they thought he had died. He was very much alive and had to craftily find a way to survive on the planet while he waiting for them to save him. The second, Artemis, is about a girl who lives on a Moon colony. She’s trying to find a way to live comfortably, and agrees to an illegal and dangerous plan to get some extra money in her pocket. I loved both characters and I loved the humour!
There isn’t a way that I can make a list about space books and not include Illuminae! This is a book about a planet that was bombed by a greedy company looking to infiltrate the mining business. The survivors escaped and found themselves dealing with a mysterious disease and artificial intelligence that was more intelligent than expected. This author duo is perfection!
The Starflight duology is a series that doesn’t get mentioned enough! I read this a few years ago and every time I see the covers I get nostalgic. We have a young girl who is looking for a way to escape. She is labeled as a felon, and decides to indenture herself to a man she couldn’t hate more just so she has a ship to take her away. This book was a great adventure and I enjoyed it SO much! Oh yeah….. there’s space pirates…. you’re welcome!
This book is truly one of a kind. I went into it expecting a sort of space opera full of action. But it ended up being more of a character exploration that knew no bounds. In this book we meet many different kids of beings as they find their connections and place in the universe. It was so well done!! The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet explores humanity in a way you’ve probably never experienced!
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe was one of my most surprising reads of 2018! I went into it expecting a romance. A girl is left alone on a space ship after her parents death. After many years of no human interaction, she’s about to be intercepted by a guy in another ship and they can travel together. All I will say is that this was NOT a romance!
Hold Back The Stars is a book that makes you think for months after you’ve turned the last page. Two characters are floating aimlessly in space after an accident, and are about to run out of oxygen. In the time that they’re figuring out how to survive, they look back at the sequence of events that brought them to this moment. This is another book that caught me off guard!
This is one of my most recent reads and one that I absolutely loved! Skyward follows a young girl who wants more than anything to be a pilot. Her father was a well known pilot, but he was probably more well known for being a traitor. She is very talented, but she needs a lot of determination and strength to get out from under her fathers shadow. This book was packed full of action and adventure!

Love this list! I read the Martian, but now I want to check out Artemis!!

Artemis is hit or miss with people. Either people love it or hate it with a passion. The main character isn’t really likeable at all. She’s bold, rude, foul mouthed, makes bad decisions. I LOVED HER lol. But be warned, some people didn’t enjoy her at all 🙂

The Martian seems very popular. I may have to check it out and in doing do double the amount of space books read. I only had one space book to include in my post so had to get creative and come up with space playlist. This morning I have listened to Babylon zoo spaceman (which is a little annoying) and Ash Girl from Mars.

Illuminae is on my shelf (the whole series but not read yet) and that last one from Brandon Sanderson seems just my kind of book! Even for a space opera newbie like me I did found some books! Here is the link https://wp.me/p8cg8e-2zD

Some great choices! I’ve not come across Starflight but I’m adding it to my list.
It’s a YA series but have you tried the Earth Girl trilogy ? I really enjoyed that and they were a fun easy read.

Starlight makes me think of an aged-up, space-themed Igraine the Brave–I’m gonna have to read it!

I don’t know why this book hasn’t gotten more hype. It’s not outstanding, but it was a damn fun time!
