First Impression Friday #22

Oh boy…. this is going to be a long one lol! I was doing really well with reading over the last few weeks AND THEN I ended up doing my own 24 hour readathon! It was really successful so I have a ton to talk about. The books that I’ve read have had really strong and strange first impressions compared to how I felt about it in the end. So this is going to be an interesting one! Here we go!

First Impression Friday is a post that was created by the brilliant Joe from J.W. Martin – Storeys of Stories. Instead of doing this weekly like he does, I decided to do this one biweekly. So every two weeks, I take the books that I’ve finished within that time period, and I compare my first impressions (from the first 1-2 chapters) with my final thoughts and how I rated it. Here are my first impressions of the books I’ve read in the last 2 weeks:

When the sky fell on splendor

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Not going to lie – my first impressions of this weren’t all that great… the characters actually annoyed me. I felt like these characters were trying WAY TOO HARD to be funny. It felt forced….. and it really worried me. I was still really excited about the plot, but I was nervous as I’d never read a book by this author. I guessed that I would rate this one 3 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Thankfully, I was wrong! I ended up rating it 4 stars! The thoughts that I had about the characters being forced was quickly squashed. I realized that there was a reason for this. These characters all experienced a horrible tragedy and they used their humour as a shield for their pain, and I ended up really loving their personalities! Click here for the full review

The Hero of Ages

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – This was a really difficult one to gain first impressions of! I’ve found that his books start off slowly and build as they go along. And, since this was the last book in the original Mistborn trilogy, I knew that I could expect all the answers that I’ve gathered over the series and I couldn’t wait! I guessed that I would rate this one 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – First I want to say that I did love this! It gave me all the answers that I craved and SO MUCH more! And that ending….. ugh! I was so overwhelmed with the emotions that I went through with that ending!!! I took away a star though because it was a little slower paced than the first two and the atmosphere was so bleak and desperate. I missed the hope and optimism of the first two. Aside, I have completely fallen in love with Brandon Sanderson! Click here for the full review

On the come up

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Angie Thomas is QUEEN! It was so easy to fall into her writing and her characters. The first chapter didn’t give away too much to the rest of the story, but I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Of course I rated this 5 stars!! This book was so good! It was everything I hoped for with the character development….. it’s so easy to fall in love and attach yourself with them! I wanted to slap the main character Bri sometimes though…. she made so many bad decisions! But it was her journey that made this story. Sometimes you need to make some bad decisions to learn from them. But it was Bri’s mother that I loved the most!!! Click here for the full review.

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – This was quite the first chapter!!! I don’t hide the fact that mysteries aren’t my thing, but this one started with a bang! A women comes home to find her garage ruined as a car had driven into it. She’s arrested though she had nothing to do with it and finds that her husband was hiding a brutal secret in their garage. I actually really enjoyed the first chapter and couldn’t wait to finish this book! I guessed that I would rate this 4 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Well…… not so much. I ended up rating it 3 stars. I did enjoy this book. There were some things that really caught me off guard and I enjoyed some of the mysterious elements! But there were quite a few things that I had problems with. I won’t go into detail here (because this post would get VERY long), but if you want my full thoughts, you can find the full review here.

Crazy rich asians

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – I’ve heard so much buzz about this book but it didn’t seem like a book that I would enjoy. A whole bunch of people with too much money to know what to do with…. not for me. But I gave it a try anyway and after that first chapter I knew that I HAD to read it! The first chapter made me love the family and laugh so hard at how over the top it was! I couldn’t wait to keep reading! I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – OMG! Of course I rated this 5 stars! I never would have expected to enjoy this book! It’s so far from what I would usually read. But this was like a crazy soap opera train wreck that I just couldn’t stop reading! I’m so glad that I chose to read this during a 24 hour readathon because I just couldn’t stop reading! I loved everything about this!! Click here for the full review.

No exit

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Hmmmm. Once again, not the biggest fan of mystery thrillers, but there was something about this one that sounded so interesting. I’ve been determined lately to find a good one, and this one sounded promising. But, after reading the first 2 chapters, I was really nervous. In the first two chapters we were told where the kidnapped girl was and who that vehicle belonged to. I expected more mystery behind it all. I didn’t know what else could happen and how. I guessed that I would rate this 2 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – I am very pleased to announce that I was WRONG! I ended up rating this one 4 stars and I was pleasantly surprised by how this one turned out! In the first two chapters, the whole book was laid out and I wondered what in the world could carry this book a few hundred pages. Plot twists and escapes – that’s what! I have a full review planned to publish in the next few days. Stay tuned.

There’s all of my first impressions of books I’ve read over the last two weeks. I have a VERY busy weekend planned so not much reading will be going on. The next first impression post will be much shorter lol!

Until next time, happy reading!
