WOW! It’s been almost a month since my last First Impression Friday post! This is one of the posts that I missed the most when I was on hiatus. There are still a few books that I didn’t mention from the end of 2018 so this might be a longer than usual first impression post.

For those of you who are new here, First Impression Friday is a post that was created by the brilliant Joe from JW Martin – Storeys of Stories. Instead of doing this weekly like he does, I decided to do this one biweekly. So every two weeks, I take the books that I’ve finished within that time period, and I compare my first impressions (from the first 1-2 chapters) with my final thoughts and how I rated it. Sadly I’m behind on my reviews, so there are only two reviews published out of the books I’ve finished. Reviews are coming soon! Here are my most recent first impressions:

Outlander

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – The first chapter of this book didn’t have me sold. In fact, I was extremely underwhelmed. I had heard so many fantastic things about this book and the characters, and the first chapter didn’t tell me a whole lot. I knew that it would take a little time to get into it though! I guessed that I would rate this 4 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – OMG!!! As underwhelmed as I was in the beginning, I’m happy to say that this book was every bit as good as people have been saying! I am OBSESSED with Jamie Fraser! I see plaid everywhere and everyone in my mind has a Scottish accent lol! It took well over 100 pages for things to settle, but once it does – this book will take over your soul!! 5 stars for sure! reaper at the gates

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Hmmmm this was a tough one! It had been a while since I’d read book 2, and I realized just how much I had forgotten when I started reading this. I couldn’t remember anyone or anything! Halfway through the first chapter I found a recap of the second book to refresh my memory……. But at the end of the first 2 chapters I still felt a little lost and disconnected. I guessed that I would rate this one 3 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – I guessed right. I really struggled through this one. Although the story was good, it felt like it was just missing something. I felt disconnected to both the story and the characters. When I got to the end I realized that I was missing the connections between the characters. Even though I rated this one 3 stars, I have faith that book 4 will pull things together. Click HERE for my full review.

Lets go swimming on doomsday

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – This was one of those books that you just know you’re going to love as soon as you get through the first few pages! I remember picking this up to only read the first chapter……. a few hours later I was a few hundred pages in and still didn’t want to put it down! I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – this book was sooooooooo amazing!! I mean REALLY amazing! The story was difficult yet so full of emotion and power. The plot was terrifying and painful, and the characters were so well written that it made the plot seem even larger. I felt this one on such a strong emotional level and couldn’t read it fast enough! Review to come next week!

The librarian of auschwitz

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – The first chapter was everything I hoped it would be. Dark, terrifying, and made me want to cry. There were quite a few lines in that first chapter alone that made me stop in my tracks and remember to breathe. I guessed that I would rate this one 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – …….. way off…….. WAY off. I ended up rating this 2 stars. That first chapter was still incredible. It set the tone for a story that would rip your heart from your chest with the horrors that were experienced in Auschwitz. But somewhere along the way it lost it’s emotional power. It was very repetitive and lacked any kind of emotion for me. The writing in that first chapter was flawless, but after that, it seemed to fall away. It was a monotone read afterwards that I really didn’t enjoy. Review to come soon.

Wildcard

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Usually it takes a little time to get readjusted when you pick up a sequel so long after reading the first book. But with this one, it was like riding a bike. It was so easy to be back in this world and with these characters. The first book ended in such a way that the direction of this book could have gone anywhere. I was immediately excited for this world again! I guessed that I would rate this 4 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – I was right again! This book was really interesting! It didn’t go in the direction that I expected, and it wasn’t perfect, but what I absolutely LOVED was how well it explored the topic of the blurred lines between right and wrong. I can’t say a lot about this right now, but I’ll talk about it more in my review. It was a really enjoyable read!!!!

As you can see, it’s been a weird start to the year. A 2 star, a 3 star, a 4 star, and a 5 star. I guess this was a sample of all the different ratings all at once lol! A little bit of everything 🙂 I do hope that all the 2 star reads are done and out of the way though…. one is enough for 2019 lol!

Until next time, happy reading!
