MY REVIEW:

There’s a first time for everything, and today I’m coming to you with 2 firsts. #1 – I DNF’d a Sarah J Maas book. #2 – I’m writing a DNF review. I’ve DNF’d (did not finish) quite a few books in my time, but I can usually determine that it’s not for me within 100 pages or less. I don’t fell comfortable writing a review for a book that I barely started, so I just don’t review it. But, in this case, I made it to 58% before making the final call to set this aside, and I thought I would share my thoughts as to why I made that decision.

When I finally decided to put this book back on my shelves unfinished, I was at the point where I was dreading opening the book at all. It wasn’t bad! Not even close! The characters were half decent, there was a plot with some mystery and intrigue…….. but, for me, the plot was too slow moving. It seemed to take quite a while to get to the point and I was finding my mind wandering and skimming pages which is something I NEVER do. The main character had a back story that made you realize she was a total bad ass and pulled on the heart strings to make you sympathize with her, but there was a chunk missing where she was the poor girl turned Catwoman. Maybe her training was explained a little more later on in the book, but I just didn’t want to read it anymore.

The plot was very basic as well. She was a glorified female Robin Hood with cat ears. Determined to take down the rich and give it to the poor. There just wasn’t enough meat to the plot to carry it for me. Quite simply, I was bored and just didn’t care for it.

Now, having said all that, this book is NOT bad! I’m just not the right audience. I’ve never been a fan of superhero comic stories. I don’t like the comics, don’t like the movies, and I don’t think I ever will. I figured though, if anyone could make superheroes interesting, it would be Sarah J Maas! Nothing against her, but it just didn’t happen. I’m not the demographic for this. I guess I went into it expecting her usual writing abilities and I felt that this was so far removed from her abilities. There will be people out there who will LOVE this! I can see how people could fall head over heels, but it’s just not my cup of whiskey.

Until next time, happy reading!

Sorry this book didn’t work out for you, Shanah. It always sucks DNF a book especially when you get as far into it as you did with this one.
On the other hand…. this book actually sounds interesting hahaha. I’ve always been intrigued by Catwoman, so maybe I’ll give it a shot. Hopefully, I’ll have better luck with it than you 😁.

I’m glad you chose to review a DNF, which is something I sometimes do, like you, depending on how far I got into the book. It’s important to have a review of a DNF and why it didn’t work for you, so readers who have similar tastes can then make a better and informed decision whether this one is for them, or not.

I think you struck the right balance and gave us the salient points of what worked and didn’t work for you. And that’s the best review we can hope for.

  5. In my opinion the DNF is the worst rating you can give a book and it is also the most important thing I want to know when it comes to reviews. I’ve read plenty of books that didnt pan out, and those are- in my humble opinion – worse than the books I finished but didnt care for. Thank you for this review, hopefully it’ll save someone else from a disappointing reading experience.

    1. In this case it wasn’t intended to be worse than a low rating. It all came down to my enjoyment level, and what I really look for in a book. This didn’t have it for me personally and there were other things I was more interested to read. I pushed myself through some really awful books over the years and I think I’m finally embracing my ability to set aside books I know I’m not interested in. Took me long enough 😂

Sorry Catwoman: Soulstealer didn’t work out for you. I thought the book was a bit slow-moving too, and it doesn’t pick up until the last fifty pages or so, which is when I got whiplash basically from everything that was suddenly being thrown into the story. Safe to say it was quite confusing! 😬

Hope your next read is much more your style! 😊💕
