October 2018 TBR!

This is my absolute FAVOURITE month to plan out a TBR! I think that spooky/creepy/mysterious books can be read all year long, but October is the time where I pack in as many of those as I can! And this month I have some really amazing ones I want to read! Reflecting now, I think I may have gone a little overboard! But there’s nothing wrong with having big reading plans 🙂 This will be a long one, so I’m just going to jump right in 🙂

The first book I’m dying to read is Scream All Night by Derek Milman. I picked this one up a few months ago, but I’ve held off on reading it because it seems like the perfect October read. A guy leaves his family and their legacy of a studio that produces cult classic B horror movies. He’s called back for a ceremony and is sucked into the world all over again. Click HERE to check it out on Goodreads.

Next is Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. I’ve been told by SO MANY PEOPLE that I need to read one of his books. With a cover and a title like that, I decided that this was the first one I would start with. I was especially interested when I found out that this is a series of 23 stories from people who answered an add to leave their lives behind and become completely isolated, which in turn, ends up being an abandoned theatre where food and supplies are limited. I can’t wait to find out what this is all about! Find it HERE on Goodreads.

The next book I hope to read is And I Darken by Kiersten White. My daughter picks this one up almost every month for my TBR unhaul challenge, but she keeps getting distracted by other books. What entices her (and me) is that i’ve heard that this is a Dracula retelling! Yes please! Find the synopsis HERE on Goodreads.

Now the next one is one that I HAVE to read. I can’t go another year without finishing it!! House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski is supposed to be one of the most terrifying reading experiences out there. There is a house that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. There’s a video that is almost impossible to find, of the people that live in this house along with others inspecting it and finding new rooms and dark hallways. There’s also elements of madness that accompany this house. I’ve read a little bit each October for the last two years, but I NEED to finish it! It’s hard to follow and I’m so confused, but I will know whats happening this year! There is a cult following on this one, and I need to know why! Find it on Goodreads HERE *** EDIT *** I finished it last night and HATED it!!!

Another definite read this month is Hexed by Kevin Hearne! I read the first book Hounded a few weeks ago and it was one of the greatest fantasy’s i’ve read in a while! It was brutal, funny, adventurous, gory, and more! If you haven’t gotten into this series yet, I HIGHLY recommend it! HERE is the synopsis for the first book in the series.

The next one might or might not happen in October. It will have to depend on when my day is for the blog tour. But I really hope that I get to read Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean this month! I will be talking about this book a lot this month, so I won’t go into detail right now. If you’re interested, HERE is the synopsis on Goodreads.

tbr challenge

As I said in my September Wrap Up – I decided to do something a little different this month. Have you ever met your bookish soul mate? The person who loves all the things that you do, as passionately as you do? I have! And her name is Justine AKA sister from across the pond. She runs the blog I Should Read That and she is also on YouTube with the same channel name as her blog – See her videos here!!! One of my favourite videos from her is her reading vlogs. I could listen to her talk about the books she’s reading for hours! Anyway, since our reading tastes are SO similar, I asked her to take a look at my “want to read” shelf on Goodreads and tell me two books that I MUST read. One I knew she was going to choose, and the other was a pleasant surprise. Here’s the 2 books I HAVE to read or else I have to unhaul them:

THAT’S RIGHT – I’M FINALLY READING MISTBORN!!!!!

I’m not going to lie – I’m totally scared, intimidated, and excited right now! Brandon Sanderson is known as a fantasy writing god of sorts, and this series is one of the most hyped series out there! I’ve been promising I was going to read it for years – and now it’s happening!!

Also, The Shadow of the Wind is one of those books that every serious bookworm says is a required book. I read a book by the same author (Marina) last October and loved it, so I’m really excited to see what this one is like!

Whew! That took me forever to get through! I’m a little scared looking at all these books now…. but I couldn’t be more excited for all of these! It’s going to be an amazing month! What do you plan to read in October?

Until next time, happy reading!

    1. Lol! The blogger that recommended it to me is basically my bookish twin so I have a feeling I’ll enjoy it. But it does have some mixed reviews…..

I haven’t read anything by Sanderson either, but now I think I’m ready!! I don’t know where to start though, would you give me a recommendation?

    1. I couldn’t recommend anything other than Mistborn. It seems to be the series that is most read and is the jumping point to a second trilogy. I’m over 100 pages into Mistborn right now and it’s fantastic!! Very slow burn, and a magic system that is the most interesting I’ve ever read. I have a feeling all these slow details will amount to something epic in the end!

Mistborn is the most famous series by Brandon Sanderson I think, a lot of people talked about it. I’m gonna order it soon, thanks Shanah, enjoy your read!!

I have Hunted on my list so I guess I’m going to end up with Hexed as well. And Empress of all Seasons is now on my radar and up for consideration too. 😀

  5. I read Haunted years ago, and I remember how creepy and disturbing it was. I really liked it at the time. I sometimes look at it in my shelf and think about re-reading it to see if I’d still like it today.

  6. I adored Shadow of the Wind and enjoyed the sequel but loved it less. The feel like I need to read Mistborn as well otherwise I’ve can’t call myself a fantasy fan if I don’t… House of Leaves has been on my TBR for over 5 years and each year I say will be the year!

    1. 😂 I felt the same way! It seems that you’re not allowed to say that you’re a fantasy reader unless you’ve read Sanderson!

    1. I can’t wait to read it! I know literally nothing about it so it will all be a surprise. It’s come highly recommended by so many!

  8. How was I not following you? Whoops! I am now ♥

Haunted is so weird, but fun. I still need to go back and finish it, but I’ve read the first 2/3 or so and it was really twisted! If you like it (or if you DON’T, but want to try something very different by Chuck), I also really recommend Invisible Monsters.

I also couldn’t help but laugh a little when I saw your edit for House of Leaves. It’s such a polarizing read. I read it about 10 years ago and I couldn’t possibly tell you if I loved it or hated it because it was so bizarre.

I LOVE your unhaul challenge idea!! As soon as I slow down on review copies a little bit, would you both be terribly upset if I borrowed that idea for my monthly TBR posts? I’d give credit! ♥

    1. 😂 House Of Leaves was just so freaking confusing! It felt like it was trying to hard to mess with my mind when the basis of the story (and reality of the house itself) messed with my mind just fine lol

    2. Oh, and apparently I hadn’t followed your blog yet either so…….. we’re even 😂

I feel like I just didn’t GET House of Leaves nor it’s hype, despite all the sites I read to try and decode it. Hope you enjoy Mistborn!!!

    1. Same!! I loved the parts about the house and the accounts of the people inside it, but other than that, it went right over my head!
