September 2018 Book Haul

Apparently I DO have willpower! Either that, or it’s the fact that back to school completely drained my bank account. In case you’re wondering, the second one was true. I didn’t buy a single book this month! I did however get an ARC and it’s one that I am SOOOOOOO excited for!

Empress of All Seasons

Pretty much everything about this book screams READ ME! When I first read the synopsis a few weeks ago, I went to my Chapters Indigo app as quick as I could to add it to my wish list! The first line of the synopsis on Goodreads says : In a palace of illusions, nothing is what it seems. See what I mean! A fantasy with a palace of illusions is calling my name! Then, theres a mention of the palace’s enchanted seasonal rooms. One for winter, spring, summer, and fall. If those rooms are conquered, then the winner gets to marry the prince and become Empress…… yes please!!! But of course, there’s a wrench in the plans as the protagonist is forbidden to enter this contest due to her ability to transform into a monster……. need it now please!!! We also have a Prince who wants nothing to do with the throne and an outcast…… must read immediately!!! Oh, and this is also inspired by the authors Japanese heritage….. slay me now!!!

I was so excited when I found out that I was approved for the blog tour and would be getting an advanced copy! I’m trying not to get my exceptions to high with this, but the synopsis is everything that I want in a fantasy novel, so I have high hopes that I will love this! I can’t wait to read it and share my thoughts. Here’s the synopsis:

In a palace of illusions, nothing is what it seems.

Each generation, a competition is held to find the next empress of Honoku. The rules are simple. Survive the palace’s enchanted seasonal rooms. Conquer Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Marry the prince. All are eligible to compete—all except yōkai, supernatural monsters and spirits whom the human emperor is determined to enslave and destroy.

Mari has spent a lifetime training to become empress. Winning should be easy. And it would be, if she weren’t hiding a dangerous secret. Mari is a yōkai with the ability to transform into a terrifying monster. If discovered, her life will be forfeit. As she struggles to keep her true identity hidden, Mari’s fate collides with that of Taro, the prince who has no desire to inherit the imperial throne, and Akira, a half-human, half-yōkai outcast.

Torn between duty and love, loyalty and betrayal, vengeance and forgiveness, the choices of Mari, Taro, and Akira will decide the fate of Honoku in this beautifully written, edge-of-your-seat YA fantasy. FIND IT ON GOODREADS

This one sounds really intriguing and who doesn’t love a good reworked folk-tale, especially a Japanese one. Monsters, perfect for October, right? 😀
