Top 5 LGBTQ!

In celebration of our communities first ever Pride Parade (complete with a newly painted rainbow crosswalk!) I decided to finally get to this topic this week! I am a straight married woman, but I am SO thankful that there is such diversity in books now. People finally feel like their not alone and get to read about relationships like their own. It’s a really beautiful thing! And, even though I’m straight, I love reading about LGBTQ relationships. Love is love in my mind and it’s beautiful no matter what the gender is that’s involved. Here are my top 5 LGBTQ books:

THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Dear lord – this book had me in tears sooooo many times. Everything about this book was just so beautiful. We have a bisexual woman who is living in the public eye in a time where being bisexual just wasn’t accepted. She had to love in the shadows, lie about her heart, and hide her true feelings. If she let it be know that her true love was a woman she could lose everything she worked for. It was so heartbreaking as we follow her journey and I can’t recommend this book enough! THE HEART’S INVISIBLE FURIES by John Boyne

This is HANDS DOWN one of my favourite books of ALL TIME!!! Just like The Seven Husbands, this book had me in tears so many times. It felt like it was building my heart up only to smash it into a million pieces all over again. We follow a man from his early childhood until just before his death in Ireland. He almost immediately knew that he was gay, but identifying as so in Ireland in that time meant he would lose his friends, family, and possibly his life. We struggle along with him as he fights his heart to do what he loves or what society thinks is right. As time goes on, and society begins to change, his life changes in many ways as well. THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END by Adam Silvera

I’m noticing a trend here…… all of these books made my ugly cry – and this one is no exception. I thought I was prepared for this book but I don’t think there’s anyway you can prepare while reading this. We are in a slightly different situation here than the first two. We meet two boys who have both been given their notice that they’re going to die within the next 24 hours. They find each other through an app and decide to be friends and help each other through this time. But with their last hours ahead of them, they decide to live life to the fullest and what comes out of this friendship is just so beautiful!!! THE LONG WAY TO A SMALL ANGRY PLANET by Becky Chambers

This is one of the most amazingly diverse books I’ve EVER read! There was gay, bisexual, transgender, trans species – basically every type of relationship you could imagine and it was SO beautiful! It was done in a way where there was a lot of curiosity and immense respect. Everything was so full of understanding and love, and I couldn’t get enough! I wanted to know every detail of all these different relationships and that’s what I got in this book. Click here for my full review.

ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

One word for this one – ADORABLE! Two young boys who become quick friends suddenly realize that there might be more to their friendship. But as they’re young, they’re struggling to come to terms with their emotions. They have insecurities about themselves, each other, and their families. This relationship was so heartwarmingly adorable and I loved to follow them as they struggled with their decisions.

All of these books were just so amazing – they all left an imprint on my heart that will never be forgotten. I could have added a few more – Perks of Being a Wallflower, Six of Crows, Carry On, Shadowhunters…….. there are just SO MANY!!
