Top 5 Villains more interesting than the hero

Thanks to Joe at JW Martin – Storeys of Stories, this topic came to life! A few weeks back I asked for suggestions of future top 5 topics and this was one of them…. and it spoke to my dark and evil soul *mwhahahaha* There are a few times where the classic “good VS evil” trope is presented and the evil side ends up being more interesting than the good side. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re choosing the side of evil (though if you did, I wouldn’t judge because you’d be joining me on the dark side), it just means that sometimes their plot line and character arc ends up speaking to you more than the hero. I honestly couldn’t wait for this topic!!! I’ve had these books on my mind for a while….. so here are the top 5 villains that I found more interesting than the hero…..

***NOTE – I just had a small surgical procedure done yesterday so I probably won’t be taking the time to comment today. I’m still a little sore and a lot a bit tired. I do promise I have read all your posts and will add you to the list ASAP!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in August – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

Renegades

RENEGADES by Marissa Meyer

This is possibly one of the best examples of good vs evil, along with blurred lines of morality. There are two very different sides fighting for very different things; both sides doing what they think is right. Society considers one side (The Renegades) to be the hero’s of the story while the Anarchists are considered evil. While each side had times where I felt they were right, it was the Anarchists that I loved the most! Their super powers were way more bad ass too!

A thousand pieces of you

A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU by Claudia Gray

I can’t go into detail about good and evil without bringing out spoilers. All that you need to know is that this series has a villain – many in fact. These villains aren’t just random people on different sides of the moral line, they’re actually different versions of themselves that came from a multiverse……. mind blown, right?! Just trust me, it gets crazier as the series goes on!!

carry-on

CARRY ON by Rainbow Rowell

Number one case where I loved the villain WAY more than the hero!!! The hero in this story is Simon Snow and, for the most part, he bored me to death. He was so insecure and confused. He just fell flat for me. But then there’s the villain Baz……. LOVE HIM!!! Everything about him! He was so bad ass, strong, fearless, determined, and layered. I will be reading the next book just for him!!

Vicious

VICIOUS by V.E. Schwab

Want a book filled with grey lines… look no further! This was all about hero’s and antihero’s and, to be honest, I couldn’t keep them straight the whole time I was reading! Both were evil really, but at times one seemed to be more evil than the other. It actually reminds me a lot of Renegades where you have two different sides fighting for what they think is right and neither is willing to compromise. Instead, they aim to kill. In this case I kind of liked them both!

you

YOU by Caroline Kepnes

Not entirely sure that this book applies……. because there is NO hero! We just have the main character Joe (who is creepy as all hell) as he stalks women and murders them. But here’s the thing – you sympathize with him! I ended up falling for him so completely that I was rooting for him and his happiness! It was such a crazy mind game scenario!! It made me feel dirty, but I still loved it; and Joe!

Thanks again to Joe for this topic! I had so much fun thinking of all the bad guys that I love to hate! Who would make your list?

Until next time, happy reading!

    1. Thanks! Feeling pretty good today! I struggle a bit with V.E. Schwab’s writing style but this one is worth the read for sure! It was so dark and confusing – by that I mean it made you question your judgement and the characters actions. Hope you love it!

I found Carry On really boring, I never really got the hype around it. Luckily Baz was there to save the book from total disaster, if only he had been the main character the novel would have been 10x better in my eyes!

    1. EXACTLY!! If it wasn’t for Baz I would have given up on this book. He really did save it!

I need to read Vicious so much! It has been on my TBR for so long and I just haven’t gotten to it yet. I even bought a copy for my library’s collection and pre-ordered Vengeful for us – what’s wrong with me? But yeah, now I really really really need to read it.

    1. Lol it’s the only one of her books that I’ve enjoyed completely. Her writing style is something that doesn’t agree with me for some reason. But Vicious was great!! Which reminds me that I need to add the sequel to my TBR!
