Top 5 Worst Book Covers

Let the unpopular opinions fly! It’s safe to say that we all notice a beautiful cover. There are some that as soon as we see them, we MUST pick the book up and read the synopsis. We proudly display them on our shelves so that we can bask in the glory of their beauty. Then there are others………. unfortunate covers that we walk right past in the store and don’t like leaving them face up on the side table. Here are 5 of those unfortunate covers that are currently on my shelves…..

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming Topics in August – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

the seven husbands of evelyn hugo

THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid

One of my all time favourite books but one of my most hated covers. This book screams to me “shallow hollywood starlet”….. a blond bombshell in a revealing dress posing for the camera. But the book is SOOOOO MUCH MORE THAN THAT! This cover doesn’t match the inside in any way. It makes me think that this book is just another chick lit and not like it’s worth my time. I wish that there was a way that the cover could match the beauty that’s on the inside!

Here we are now

HERE WE ARE NOW by Jasmine Warga

This cover isn’t awful by any means. I love the colours, the font, and the images. But, yet again, I’m faced with a cover that does nothing for me really. This cover doesn’t really say anything about story. And after having read it, it makes even less sense to me!

calendar-girl-volume-4

THE CALENDAR GIRL SERIES by Audrey Carlan

This cover is just blah. There is a picture of a beautiful girl behind the lettering but that’s about it. I know that it’s all about the girl Mia, but even still there’s something about this cover that’s just so mediocre. And there isn’t really anything mediocre about the series at all! The series is AMAZING!

Night film

NIGHT FILM by Marisha Pessl

Not a fan of this cover. At all! Before I read it, the cover was ok. But after I finished reading it, the cover annoyed me. The book was creepy and mysterious! I really wish that there was more of a focus on the darkness within the story instead of the girl that had gone missing. I do really appreciate the circle pattern however! It gives an extra layer to the image and makes it unique.

Mistborn trilogy

THE MISTBORN TRILOGY by Brandon Sanderson

UGH I loathe these covers! I don’t know why, but I really don’t like even looking at them. I get that they show a strong young girl but that’s not enough to make me like them. It just feels generic and underwhelming. I don’t know why, but these covers make me want to hide them!

Arrow

TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:

Arrow

Those are the top 5 books who’s covers I don’t particularly enjoy. They aren’t terrible! It’s just that they aren’t my favourite or I don’t feel as though the cover fits the plot inside. I will admit though, if these books had a cover redesign I wouldn’t be mad about it!!

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. Evelyn Hugo is on my Top 5 too.. It’s so disappointing when some of your favorite books have such bad covers.

I won’t be participating today, but I will try and do so in August! I think the one I really dislike is The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. It’s a rubbish cover! I got in on audiobook and even if I love it I won’t buy a physical copy until they change the crappy cover. I agree with all of your choices though!

And I have to agree with your choices, except maybe, the Sanderson covers which aren’t too bad. They could always be better.

I love the colours on the cover of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo so much, but I totally agree that it’s such a bad cover. I haven’t read the book yet but the cover made me want to avoid it at first. It just looks like a really cheesy romance that I didn’t have any interest in reading until I saw all the positive reviews about it!

    1. Agreed! I love the colours too but it totally looks like a cheesy romance novel!

  13. The one reason i didn’t buy The Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo was the unbearable cover. I thought the inside was just as bad. But after reading your review, i’m sure gonna try it!

Yes to Evelyn Hugo! I avoided buying this book because the cover screams cheesy Hollywood romance. After hearing so many wonderful things about it I finally decided to buy it. Same with Stalking Jack The Ripper

    1. The cover really does scream cheesy Hollywood romance. Like it’s a tabloid magazine or something. It’s NOTHING like that!

  15. Hey Shanah, I agree that the cover for ‘The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo’ has the “shallow Hollywood starlet” look to it, but I’m thinking CLICKBATE in a positive way. The cover is designed to get attention. When you stop and read the book, you feel satisfied that it was more than that.

    1. For me it had the negative effect. I never would have bought it if it wasn’t for the glowing reviews. But I do feel happy telling people that it’s nothing like the cover 😂

  16. I totally agree with your picks! Some books never get the chance to be great because the covers suck.
