TBR Unhaul – Wrap Up #3

Another month down! It feels like I just started doing this but now i’m about to go into my 4th month! (For the rules and details of this challenge see my announcement post  Things are going so well with this and I haven’t stressed one bit! Since I’m a massive mood reader, I was afraid that this wasn’t going to work at all. Having set books that I HAD to read even if I wasn’t in the mood for them. But that hasn’t happened at all! I did, however, have a very unexpected turn out this month. Let me explain…..

The unexpected everything

The first book that was chosen for July was The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson. My brat son decided that he would choose one of the longest books on my TBR shelves just to be funny. I was actually really excited he chose it though! I had just finished Save the Date by this author and this was a book that I’ve been wanting to read for a while now. Sadly, I ended up DNF’ing it. I read the first three chapters and I just couldn’t care less about the story. It felt like it was very choppy and the characters were very one dimensional and annoying actually. Initially I was sad about making the decision but now I’ve made peace with it. This book just wasn’t for me. At all.

A closed and common orbit

The TBR jar pick of the month was A Closed And Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. No, I haven’t finished it yet, but I’m still currently reading it! I will finish it because I want to keep it! I’m going to be honest though, it took me a long time to get into it. I read the first chapter 3 times before finally convincing myself that I had to push through. It’s been so long since I’ve finished the first book that I forgot what happened and who the characters were. I will finish this and review it soon 🙂

TBR UNHAUL TOTALS:

BOOKS READ: 4

BOOKS UNHAULED: 2

So I’ve unhauled 2 books now. I never imagined that this would happen! It makes me sad to DNF books, but this challenge is really helping me to cope with my guilt of giving up. I’ve definitely decided that I need to give up on feeling bad about giving up on a book that I don’t enjoy. I’ve already got my books chosen for August and I am SOOOOO excited for the choices! Can’t wait to let you know what I will be reading! The books will be announced in my August TBR coming soon 🙂

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. Oh, that’s so sad about the Morgan Matson book. I’ve also recently finished Save the Date and was looking at reading other books of hers. I’ll stay away from this one though…

    1. I would say still give it a shot! There are a few other people with the same reading tastes as me and they loved it. Maybe try Since You’ve Been Gone. I really liked that one! I’ve also heard Second Chance Summer was good as well 🙂

  2. I literally gasped when I saw The Unexpected Everything on this list. lol. It’s my favorite Morgan Matson book and I gifted it to my cousin, who just finished reading it and she enjoyed it too. I’m sorry that you didn’t 😦

    1. I’m surprised that I didn’t either! Every Morgan Matson that I’ve read I’ve really enjoyed. I’m sure that if I pushed through I might have liked it but I tried 3 times to make myself read it and I just couldn’t. I still love Morgan Matson though!

  3. This is a really awesome challenge idea and one that I may want to adopt in the future. I was just saying to someone else that I am coming to a time where I am running out of space on my multi-bookshelves and need to do some serious unhauling. The problem is that I get too attached and have a difficult time letting things go. I’m a saver. But this seems like a really sound way to cut down on those books! I like that you get your kids to pick one book a month :] I let my fiance pick a book or two here and there and he always gets excited to see what I think of his picks..my only concern is that I am a serious mood reader…and I don’t know how good i’d be at keeping to those specific picks each month if I all of a sudden wasn’t in the mood..

    1. I’m a huge mood reader too and it hasn’t gotten in the way so far. Instead of doing two a month, maybe just do one? Or, pick two and read the one that you’re most in the mood for?
I’m running out of room too so I really needed to weed through it all. It’s been therapeutic to get rid of some that I’m just not interested in. Before I did this I unhauled about 10 books that I knew I was never going to read. I promptly filled that space with books I was actually excited for!

      1. Bahaha fair enough. I actually did a version of this for my August TBR… I tagged you in my monthly wrap up so you’ll see what I mean but yeah I totally understand. I have two huge bookshelves at my parents house that I NEED to weed out. As well as two bookcases at my apartment that quickly filled up. And just so many books coming in.. at all times.. haha it’s a struggle for sure

I love this! That’s seriously the whole reason why I actually started my blog. I’ve got over 350 books on my TBR shelves, which is a very serious situation. And I always have such a hard time choosing what to read next.

    1. 350 on your TBR?? That’s most definitely a serious situation!! Best of luck cutting down on the TBR tower! Lol
