First Impression Friday #8

Yippee!! It’s Fri-yay! This doesn’t mean it’s the weekend for me though. Running 2 businesses while simultaneously entertaining my 2 children means that I never get a day off. But Friday means my favourite blog post – FIRST IMPRESSION FRIDAY! As always, credit goes to the ever amazing and hilarious Joe from JW Martin – Storeys of Stories for creating this amazing meme. The rules are as follows – Every other Friday I tell you my first impression of a book based on the first 1-2 chapters (Depending on the chapter length) and I compare my initial thoughts with how I thought of it in the end.

This reading period I read 5 books, but two of them were rereads so I already knew what I thought of them. I read Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Those were obvious 5 stars! Here are the next 3 that were new:

The poppy war

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Oh lord the chapters in this one were LONG! The first chapter was almost 30 pages long which gave me quite a long time to settle into the story. It gave me a clear picture that the main character Rin wasn’t the type of person to stand aside and let her fate be decided for her. She was a fighter and would choose her own destiny. I guessed that I would rate this 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – Close. I ended up rating it 4 stars. It was an action packed book filled with tiny details that came together to make an amazing story. But the second and third parts of the book felt so vastly different from the first part. I loved the first part of this book whole heartedly! I liked parts 2 and 3, but part 1 was everything! One True Loves

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – This book didn’t take its time getting to the point! It starts with a bang and throws you right into the situation. She’s with her fiancee and family when her husband that everyone thought was dead calls her to say he’s coming home. I read and LOVED The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by the same author so I had a feeling I would feel the same way about this one. I guessed I would rate this 5 stars……

HOW I RATED IT – I ended up rating it 4 stars. I really did enjoy it. The plot, the characters, the indecision and impossibility of it all. But for some reason I felt like my emotions never came to the surface completely. I’m not really sure why! For my full review click HERE

Disappearance at devils rock

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS – I was immediately sucked into this one! The first chapter jumped right into the disappearance and the mystery of it all. Being a mother, I felt the horror and desperation of a son that’s gone missing. I absolutely couldn’t wait to unravel this mystery! All the while I was anticipating the same horror and paranormal that he brought to the table in A Head Full of Ghosts. I guessed that I would rate this one 5 stars…..

HOW I RATED IT – It’s 100% safe to say that this was the most disappointing read of 2018. I ended up rating it 2.5 stars. This was NOTHING at all like I was hoping! From the synopsis I gathered that this would be a strongly themed paranormal read like A Head Full of Ghosts was. It talks about Devils Rock, a curse, a ghostly shadow of her son, a folktale, haunting and sinister. These are all buzzwords that were used in the actual synopsis! But this book had nothing of what I mentioned above. It was still well written and kept me reading but really nothing happened. I will go into more detail with this when I post the review next week.

My first impressions this week seemed to follow yet another theme – books I thought would be 5 stars but didn’t quite get there. I still really enjoyed these though and I’m really glad I read them!

Until next time, happy reading!

    1. It definitely did have some downfalls. Mainly the pace and the second and third parts were so different from the first. Maybe try the audiobook for a few chapters to see if it would suit you?
