I guess it’s that time of the year again – I’m always stunned when we hit the halfway mark of the year. It happens so fast! I did this tag last year (click here for my 2017 mid year freak out post) and it’s really cool to look back and compare this year to last year!
1 – THE BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2018
I swear i’m the most indecisive person on this planet. I can’t pick just one – I CAN’T! I have no clue how I’m going to pick a top 10 for the year. There have been way too many amazing books this year so far! These were 4 of my absolute favourites and I talk about them constantly 🙂
2 – YOUR FAVOURITE SEQUEL THIS YEAR
Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire. This is book 3 to the Wayward Children series, and it was my favourite in the series so far! We got to see some of the worlds beyond the doorways and see some of the characters in their element. I loved being able to experience some of these worlds first hand!
3 – A NEW RELEASE THAT YOU HAVEN’T READ BUT YOU REALLY WANT TO
A Reaper At The Gates by Sabaa Tahir. I’ve been anticipating this book since the release of book 2 and I haven’t purchased it yet. I had spent so much money this month on vacations and other books, that I didn’t have the money to get this yet. I’m crossing my fingers I can pick it up soon!!!
4 – MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR
Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas! I need to know how it ends!!! I will admit that I’m a little afraid for these characters lives though. I’m happy we finally get a conclusion – but I’m still terrified!!
5 – YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones. This makes me so sad to type this. But it’s the truth. I read Wintersong only a few weeks before reading its sequel. And Wintersong is one of my favourites of the year so far! I fell into the world and the characters lives SO HARD. I would read and forget my surroundings all together. I loved the characters and my heart was into the story 50000%. It was a really emotional read! But then, Shadowsong just fell flat. It seemed to be missing the emotions, the atmosphere, the romance, the forbidden love, the setting – basically everything that I loved about book one. We also rarely got a glimpse of The Goblin King, who was my favourite character in Wintersong. It was ok, but nowhere near as good as the first one.
6 – BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE YEAR
Every Heart a Doorway – I’m mentioning this one a lot lol. I thought I would hate this book. I assumed that it was a mystery with paranormal elements. And it was. But mystery is probably my least read genre. But the reviews were so positive, and the book was so short, I figured I would just try it – and it turned out to be something totally different than I was expecting! This tiny book packs such a punch! From the characters to the worlds – it’s amazing!
7 – FAVOURITE NEW TO YOU OR DEBUT AUTHOR
Tomi Adeyemi – wow! I absolutely love her writing style! For such a large book she was able to keep an even pace, and keep me interested the whole way though! Her character building was wonderful, her world building was detailed and wonderful, and the story itself was so well done! I have a feeling she will end up on a lot of lists this year!
8 – YOUR NEW FICTIONAL CRUSH
Hmmmm I wouldn’t say that I have one so far this year. Maybe Dante from Legendary? He’s dark, mysterious, tattooed, and protective. I wouldn’t say he’s a crush though… but maybe? lol
9 – NEW FAVOURITE CHARACTER
Lemon Fresh from Lifel1k3! She’s my kind of girl! Fearless, strong, smart mouthed….. we could be total besties!
10 – A BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I haven’t cried while reading this year! This is shocking because I’m super emotional and cry at almost anything. I came close a couple of times, but no official tears.
11 – A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY
Night of Cake and Puppets had me smiling like a fool the whole way through! The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series isn’t my favourite. Book one was ok but book 2 had me falling asleep. The best thing about that series though is Zusana. She is hands down one of the greatest side characters I’ve ever read! And reading about the beginnings of her relationship was one of the most adorable things I’ve ever read!
12 – YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION THAT YOU’VE SEEN THIS YEAR
This question is easy – I haven’t seen any! LOL
13 – FAVOURITE BLOG POST YOU’VE PUBLISHED THIS YEAR
I think that my favourite idea this year is the TBR Unhaul challenge. Not the post itself but the idea. Starting this has made such a big difference in my backlisted books already! It’s forcing me to read some books that I’ve put off for way too long. Most of all, it’s helping me weed through those books and consider if they’re something that I’m really interested in anymore.
14 – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU HAVE BOUGHT/RECEIVED THIS YEAR
I don’t know why, but there’s something so pleasingly simple about this cover! The shimmer and shine, the shapes, the font, the texture…… oh, and it’s Kristoff lol
15 – WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BOOKS THAT YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?
I’m hesitant to post anything lol! The books that I listed last year that I wanted to read….. I only read one! So I’ll keep this list simple lol
That’s the first half of the year! I have accomplished so much so far, and there’s still so much more to come! 2018 might just be my best year yet!
Until next time, happy reading!
I agree! Every Heart a Doorway was a surprise for me too. I thought for sure it was going to be over hyped but I am so happy that I was wrong. Loved it!

Yay! I thought the hype was ridiculous until I finally read it myself. Totally worth it!

I really enjoyed Every Heart a Doorway. The concept was great and Jack and Jill were particularly fascinating. I found the ending a little abrupt though.

The ending of all of them at abrupt. I wish they weren’t short stories/novellas. If they were longer then it would be able to finish with more length and detail. Also I’m greedy and just want more lol

Oh I hope so!! I waited so long to read it because someone told me it was a mystery novel. I’m not usually a fan so I assumed I wouldn’t like it. But I happened to pick it up from the Library one day and finished it in an hour. I haven’t come across a single person who didn’t like it! I hope you love it as much as I do!
