Top 5 Opening/First lines

Happy Top 5 Tuesday everyone! I am SO excited for this topic! For some reason, opening lines are a thing that can hook me. It can be simple, bold, brutal, vulgar, and so on. But if it’s something unique, that line can often make me more interested in starting the story. When I listed this topic I went through my books to see how many lines I could talk about – turns out there were more than I thought!!! I couldn’t decide so there are 7 lines on this list – they were just too good not to mention!!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in May – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

nevernight

“People often shit themselves when they die.”

Well, yes Mr. Kristoff, this is a true statement. But to start off a book stating that fact….. it’s both disgusting and incredibly intriguing! Makes me want to read on to see why this fact is being displayed to me. Well played sir.

the-martian

“I’m pretty much fucked.”

This is quite possibly the most epic way to start a book. Ever. When the character is proclaiming the level upon which they’re screwed right off the hop… you know what’s coming is going to be good!!

six-of-crows

“Joost had two problems: The moon and his moustache.”

What? I mean, what? Never in my life would I think that the moon or a moustache would be a problem. Well I guess a moustache could be considered a problem if I actually HAD one, seeing as how i’m a girl. Even still, this is a heck of a way to start a book!

We are the ants

“Life is bullshit.”

Well, simply said and I would sometimes have to agree!!

My best friends exorcism

“The exorcist is dead.”

Hmmmm it’s called My Best Friends Exorcism…… and you’re starting it off telling me that the exorcist is already dead……. something tells me this isn’t going to end well! I’m completely interested!

labyrinth-lost

“The second time I saw my dead Aunt Rosaria she was dancing.”

Wait, back the train up a bit here. This is the second time you’ve seen your dead aunt? What happened the first time? And why is she dancing now? Are you on drugs? Just saying…..

Vicious

“Victor readjusted the shovels on his shoulder and stepped gingerly over an old, half sunken grave.”

Whelp…. we are in a cemetery about to possibly dig up a body…… I mean…… ewwwww! Nothing good can come out of this…..

  5. I love this post! Opening lines in books are sometimes so freaking awesome. Another one I love is The Upside of Unrequited. “I’m on the toilet at the 9:30 Club, and I’m wondering how mermaids pee.” The weird ones always grab my attention.

Omg… people shitting themselves when they’re about to die is so true (also, according to GOT *cough* *Tywin Lannister*). And I agree with your comment on life being bullshit. Sometimes. Not always.
