Top 5 books I didn’t like that others loved

OH! Let the unpopular opinions commence! And, apparently, I have a lot of them. For some reason it’s always easier to come up with the books I didn’t like opposed to the books that I liked. I don’t know why. And just because I didn’t like these, it doesn’t mean that they’re bad by any means. Someone out there loves them! But just not me lol

Side note to all participants – I will do my best to make sure everyone is added to the list today. But my day is chaos. I have a massive order to ship out to our distributor and I also need to get things in place to pick up a new (to me) vehicle today! So I’ll be running around like a chicken with my head cut off! I will add everyone and then come back and comments on your posts tomorrow. Sorry! Things always seem to happen on Tuesdays!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in April – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

gone-girl

GONE GIRL BY GILLIAN FLYNN
Literally the only book I ever rated 1 star. Also the only book to ever make me so angry I literally threw it across the room.

Heartless

HEARTLESS BY MARISSA MEYER
I wanted SO badly to love this book. SO BADLY! I loved the Lunar Chronicles so much, and this one is a retelling of the Red Queen who is one of my favourite fairy tale characters. But it just fell flat for me. There wasn’t enough anger and attitude until the very last minute. Not to mention that she repeated herself so many times. We get it. You want to bake. But I don’t need you to remind me on literally every page!! I still love Marissa Meyer though!

Flame in the mist

FLAME IN THE MIST BY RENÉE AHDIEH
Yet another example of a book I wanted to love because I loved the authors previous books. The Wrath and the Dawn was a series that I will love forever. It grabbed my emotions harder than I ever expected. But this one fell flat just like Heartless did. I didn’t care for the characters and I found myself getting confused as to who was who, and what was happening. I don’t plan to continue with this series.

Lady Midnight

LADY MIDNIGHT BY CASSANDRA CLARE
I’m so over the Shadowhunters. It’s not that she’s a bad writer. The Infernal Devices trilogy was absolutely glorious!!! But I think that I’m just bored with the shadow hunters. I wish we could see something different from her. This one just felt like the same recycled storyline all over again.

Fangirl

FANGIRL BY RAINBOW ROWELL
I honestly think that if I had read this when I was a teenager I would have loved it. But reading it in my 30’s, I found it so annoying. I didn’t enjoy the characters at all and I didn’t like their choices even more. I wanted to reach through the book and shake their heads and tell them to grow a spine. I know, you’re all gasping and hate me now. I accept this! lol

AND BECAUSE 5 JUST WASN’T ENOUGH:

There are a few other books that I want to add to this list as well!

  • Paper Towns by John Green – Possibly my least favourite John Green book. The “missing girl” is the most selfish person on earth.
  • Final Girls by Riley Sager – The ending of this book made literally no sense. Reminded me a lot of Gillian Flynn. The ‘killer’ was there as a shock value but made no sense at all and the strings just didn’t connect.
  • Where’d You Go Bernadette – The mother is a garbage human

Arrow

TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:

Arrow

I sincerely hope that my opinions don’t make anyone mad. These are some well loved books I’m talking about. They’re not bad, they’re just not for me! And I noticed that a lot of the problems I had were with characters. There’s a certain character type that I just don’t enjoy reading about. What books do you not enjoy that others seem to love?

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. Ahhh no! I loved Gone Girl!
Totally agree with Paper Towns…. I was not a fan 😦

    1. Pretty much everyone in the world loved Gone Girl. I wish I liked it. I even tried another one of her books to see if it was just that one. Unfortunately it was her writing that doesn’t agree with me. I guess we all have that one author

      1. Yeah, maybe stay clear of her books from now on haha! At least you tried another one of her books to make sure 😀

        1. There isn’t a snowballs chance in hell that I will ever read another Gillian Flynn book! 😂

I like your point about Heartless, that she really didn’t get mean or terrible enough until the very end! I did really love that book, but I won’t deny that it was very slow paced and the “fluff” kind of lasted too long. Did you read the Lunar Chronicles before that one? I read Heartless first, but I think had I read the Lunar Chronicles first I would have enjoyed Heartless a little less, simply because I find the Lunar Chronicles SO much faster paced and full of action, the comparison probably would have damped my experience with Heartless a bit.

    1. Yes I read the Lunar Chronicles first. The two don’t even compare. And she went from sweet to evil in the span of a page. It was so sudden and it didn’t make sense to me. I think that if I read it before the Lunar Chronicles I might have enjoyed it more as well

      Liked by 1 person

  3. I hated the repetition of “baking love” in Heartless as well. It was so annoying but I still love the book.

I love Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles as well and wanted so badly to like Heartless! I DNFed it though 😦 Agreed with Flame in the Mist and fangirl as well!

  5. Congratulations on your new car!

I read Fangirl when it first came out and a lot has changed in five years! I wonder what I would think of it today.

I also didn’t like Paper Towns or Where’d You Go Bernadette. I had to force myself to finish them.

    1. I’m so glad to know I’m not alone I’m not liking these books. I do think that if I read Fangirl when I was younger I would have loved it! And same, I forced myself to finish most of these

  6. GASP! Heartless? It’s one of my favorite books of all time. haha. I’m not the type of person who gets offended if someone doesn’t like my favorite book so no problem. Also, I didn’t love Gone Girl either. I thought it was okay. I watched the movie before reading the book so that ruined all the twists and surprises for me.

    1. Lol I LOVE Marissa Meyer! Everything else she’s written is amazing. But that one I just couldn’t get into. I’m keeping it on my shelf because it’s beautiful and goes with my collection lol

  7. Totally agree about Where’d you go Bernadette! And i hated the film Gone Girl so that means I’ll go nowhere near the book!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The movie was a little better than the book. But not by much. I think it’s only because I love Ben Affleck lol

  9. I think I ended up giving Heartless 4 stars but it was a huge let down for me. Looking back on it I probably should have rated it lower.

I forgot about Gone Girl! That book was just meh for me. And I also agree with you on Final Girls. Totally had no idea where the author was going with that one.

    1. The ending made no sense. There wasn’t even anything that I could go back on and think that it was suspicious. I would have been happier if they went with the obvious!

I prefer Gillian Flynn’s debut novel, Sharp Objects, over Gone Girl and her other book Dark Places.

  11. I feel the same way 😂 So easy coming up with this week’s list haha!

Completely agree with Finals Girl, think the hype was just way too much and ruined the experience for me.

  12. I actually really enjoyed Paper Towns, but totally understand why you don’t. Margot is very selfish and I didn’t like her, but I liked the other characters and their stories which is why I ended up really enjoying the book.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Agreed. The other characters were great. They were the only reason I finished the book

I had and still have so many mixed feelings about Fangirl! Part of me loved it, but then part of me didn’t – it’s so confusing haha!

I was having a hard time with this weeks topic. All the books i didn’t like seemed to just vanish from my mind 😅

  17. I loved Fangirl but I’m just that kind of awkward person so I totally related. ❤ I can see why Flame in the Mist didn't do it for you too… I just finished it and why I didn't hate it, the writing style didn't work as well for the story as in her first series. I actually enjoyed writing this post! But it is so much better to hear someone else talk about hyped books they didn't love!!

i haven’t read lady midnight nor a flame in the mist yet. maybe because of all the mixed reviews about them

I’m not much of a John Green fan, I’ve only read “The Fault in our Stars” and “Paper Towns”…I wasn’t impressed. I hear “Turtles All the Way Down” is great though…so I’m crossing my fingers!

I still haven’t finished “Heartless”, but I did love the Lunar Chronicles! I’m hoping I’ll be able to get through it, but I don’t know if I’ll love it…it started so slow and I’ve never been a fan of Alice and Wonderland, so the Queen of Hearts already doesn’t interest me.

    1. I’ve heard that Turtles is possibly his best book. Many people that haven’t liked the majority of his books are praising it. So there’s hope!

Oh, Paper Towns is a good one. I definitely agree about that. I had trouble with these two weeks so I ended up not doing them – but I hope I can think of things for the next one!

  23. I was sooooooo disappointed by Final Girls! There was quite a bit of praise for it but when it was just…kind of unrealistic. Very dramatic and predictable.

My sister loved Gone Girl and while I’ve watched the movie, I still haven’t read the book. Here’s hoping I enjoy it!

    1. If you liked the Gone Girl movie then you’ll probably love the book 🙂
