Weekly Wrap Up – April 2 – 8

I think I rename this week as the week of the up’s and down’s. I was one or the other but never in the middle! On one hand I was super productive with work, spent a lot of time with my kids, and got a lot done around the house. Then on the other hand I feel like I can’t catch a break. I had a doctors appointment (i’ll get to that in a little bit), sprained my wrist, and spent a lot of time communicating with the school regarding a rumoured threat on my daughters school. We thought it had to do with another school district so I didn’t worry. But, to be safe, I kept her home on the day that there was rumoured to be a shooting. Good call too. Later that day a 15 year old boy was arrested after threatening the school. I don’t know any details but it messes with the mind. It makes me so sad that this is a reality. I did manage to get a lot of reading done but it was mostly because I needed to occupy my mind with something else. I’m glad that I chose the books that I did because they were SO good I completely forgot about my worries while I was reading. So maybe that’s why I read so much lol.

BOOKS I’VE READ THIS WEEK:

CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE by Tomi Adeyemi <—– (full review)

This book was just SO good! It’s probably my favourite book of the year so far yet my least favourite review. It’s very hard to explain how much I love this book and why without spoilers. The all around atmosphere, the character development, the world building – it was all so well done! The premise isn’t the most unique one out there, but the way that it was executed was so refreshing and complex. If you haven’t read this one yet, you need to! The book far exceeds the hype and that’s saying a lot!

ONE OF US IS LYING by Karen M McManus

I was hesitant about this one. I’ve heard so many great things about it over the last few months but YA mystery isn’t a genre that I’m a fan of. Usually. But this book was such a pleasant surprise and I ended up really enjoying it! I assumed that it would be full of teenage drama and annoying characters, but their character arcs and development was so well done. They started off one way and then the tragedy forced them to rethink who they are and what they wanted for themselves. It made them step out from behind their lies and secrets. I’m so glad I read it! Review will be coming tomorrow 🙂

BOOKS I’M CURRENTLY READING:

I’m pretty close to finishing Honor Among Thieves now, but I almost DNF’d it. It’s not the easiest book to get into. I tried reading it a couple of months ago and stopped. The first 2 chapters felt like torture. But this time I pushed through and it picked up into a really unique and interesting story! I’m still a little confused about what’s really going on, but that will be answered in time.

After I finish that, I plan on picking up The Marrow Thieves (I just now realized that both of these books have ‘Thieves’ in the title…… I did NOT plan that!). It’s a book I’ve wanted to read for the longest time! It’s also short so I hope to finish it this week.

OTHER BOOKISH NEWS:

TOP 5 TUESDAY:

This week was all about the Top 5 books that need a prequel. I wasn’t surprised by the number of people who had Harry Potter on their list (apparently we all want more of Snape and the Marauders! Are you listening J.K.?). I was surprised, however, to see so many people list The Night Circus! Next weeks topic is the Top 5 books you LOVED that others didn’t. Let the unpopular opinions commence!!!

READING GOALS UPDATE:

Since we are now 1/4 of the way through the year, I decided to take a look at how my reading goals are progressing. Some I’m ahead of the game, while some I haven’t even started. The one that I’m most proud of is that I’m ahead of schedule with reading 100 books this year. If I make this goal I will be SO HAPPY!!

LIFE UPDATE:

I just wanted to take a second and thank you all for your amazing kind words and support. Last week I wrote the most personal thing I’ve ever put out there and talked about my cancer story. I was struggling and afraid so I wrote about it to cleanse my soul. I felt better getting it out there but it was the support of all of you that really soothed my soul. I just wanted to let you know that I saw the doctor and there was nothing found!!!! My lymph nodes are swollen, but the ultrasound didn’t show anything. They figure I’m fighting off some sort of infection. So as far as I’m seeing things now, no return of cancer!!! I did, however, find out that a fibroid has grown which means a trip to the gyno. I’m a little worried about it but I know that it’s very common and it actually explains a lot of symptoms that I didn’t know was related. I’m not thrilled that this might mean a hysterectomy, but at the same time, if it will remove my symptoms, it’s probably for the best. My anxiety is still a disaster though. I’ve gotten a prescription for some medication (which I swore I would never do) and am waiting for a call back for a therapist.

Right now I feel like I can’t catch a break and I’m worried that there always seems to be something wrong with my health. But I’m taking the right steps to get things figured out. I have to realize that this is a process and it can’t be fixed right away. I know that things will get better, and things will get figured out, but it’s sometimes hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel a little like I’m drowning. I just have to hold on until I can learn how to swim.

Arrow

That was my week. A whole lot of chaos but still trying to find the positive side. If you made it all the way through this post – thank you! It’s a long one! I’m hoping that things can calm down soon and I can get back to a happy place in all things. I hope you all had a fantastic week!!!

Until next time, happy reading!

Wow Shannah it was scarry for your daughter! You took the right decision. I am happy that nothing was found and that you are cancer free. As far as the other symptoms, rest, rest, rest. The mind plays an important role on anxiety. I am also happy that you loved One of Us is Lying. The character development was incredible.

If some meds can get you back on track and some peace of mind, it’s definitely worth it! Our mental health has such a huge effect on our general health. Hope you feel better soon! xx

    1. I think you hit the nail on the head there. I’ve been under so much stress and my anxiety has been high. I know it’s effecting my health in general. Meds don’t make me weak. Admitting I need them is strength! Thanks so much ❤️

So happy to hear that the cancer hasn’t returned! And your daughter is safe! I’m on the fence about anxiety meds too. But if it will help you feel better then that’s a good thing, right? Hope everything works out soon!! 🙂

    1. I’ve come to decide that meds don’t make me weak. Admitting that you need them is strength. I hope you can get things straightened out as well. Anxiety plays awful mind games

It really does! So far therapy has worked. I still have bad moments but I take it day by day. And you’re right. Admitting that you need meds doesn’t make you weak. It’s the exact opposite. It takes incredible strength to say “hey, something is wrong with me and I need to do everything I possibly can to make myself healthy”. There’s nothing wrong with taking medication. And don’t let anyone make you feel like there is.

        1. I think it really does take a lot of strength to make those steps for your health. There’s so much stigma behind meds and mental health in general. Glad things are going better for you. I hope to report the same soon 🙂

I’m so happy to hear Honor Among Thieves gets better. I put it aside as well because so far it hasn’t been the best novel, and I’ve also thought about DNFing it a couple times. But hearing you say that makes me want to give it a second chance😊.

    1. I think I picked it up twice before I finally pushed through. Those first 100 pages were just torture lol. I ended up listening to the audiobook for the first half and that helped a lot. But it really does pick up – I promise! I hope you can push through and enjoy it!
