Favourite books I read this winter!

Someone said it was officially spring?! I’m not sure that I believe them! It’s still cold outside, but there are signs that warm weather is coming, and I AM READY! This winter has felt so long and I’m itching for warm weather, flowers blooming, and trees with their glorious leaves.

As much as I love looking back on my favourites of the year, I thought it would be nice to highlight the favourites as each season passes. At the end of the year, I have to overlook some favourites to choose others, so this is a way to highlight even more amazing books. So these are my favourites that I’ve read this winter!

Night of Cake and Puppets

NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS by Laini Taylor <—– (full review)

This book was quite possibly the cutest, most adorable book I’ve ever read!!! Zusana will go down in history as one of my all time favourite side characters! Getting more from her was a dream come true. We got her sassy, quirky, personality mixed with the gooey and adorable beginnings of her relationship. I LOVED IT! There were also illustrations that totally fit how I imagined her drawings to be. If you’ve read the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, then this is a MUST read!

Wintersong

WINTERSONG by S. Jae Jones <—– (full review)

This book. I mean…….. gah!!!! I had heard great things about it but my reaction to it was something I didn’t expect. I was SO invested in this book that everything around me disappeared. My hands were shaking so hard while reading it I actually had to take breaks. The worst part is that I can’t even explain (or understand) why I related to this book so much! I think that the writing had a lot to do with it. I just loved her writing, her world building, and the way she was able to capture my emotions so completely. Sadly, the sequel was a little flat in comparison, but this book is one that I need to reread. I swear I can still feel the ghost of the emotions I felt!

Waking gods

WAKING GODS by Sylvain Neuvel <—– (full review)

If you like science fiction then you NEED this series! I read the first book in this series (Sleeping Giants) last year and I really liked it. But this book seemed to take it to a whole other level! The first book was figuring out what these “robots” were, but this one was finding out what they were capable of……. and it was terrifying! The world building was great, the format was interesting, and the characters ranged from likeable to downright hateable! But I highly recommend the audiobooks! There’s full cast narration and sound effects as well. It was truly a great experience!

First autumn frost on Stinging Nettle leaves - France - - -

I STOP SOMEWHERE by T.E. Carter <—– (full review)

Quite possibly one of the most triggering books for rape, but most definitely one of the most important reads dealing with the subject. It was a really hard read sometimes. I felt like it was gripping my heart and not wanting to let go. But what made this book so amazing is that we see such a wide scope of what rape and murder does to not only the victim, but to the attacker, the families, the friends, the community, the media and more. We learned so much about how people think and why. It was eye opening and completely heart breaking. But since this book is very descriptive, I wouldn’t recommend this to just everyone.

Every heart a doorway

EVERY HEART A DOORWAY by Seanan McGuire <—– (full review)

This book is a bit of a surprise to me. I refused to read it for the longest time because magical realism is really hit or miss with me. Mostly miss if I’m being honest. But this book was so well crafted that I couldn’t stop reading! It’s less than 200 pages, but what this book packs in those pages is phenomenal! I crave more from this world (or worlds?) and more from these characters and their lives. SO good!

Arrow

That was a quick glimpse into my favourite reads of winter. I could have made the list a little longer, but these are the books that I can’t seem to get out of my mind! I loved them so very much! It was a fantastic way to start the year! What were your favourite reads this winter (or summer for some of you 🙂 )

Until next time, happy reading!

I clearly really need to read Every Heart a Doorway! I have a copy of Wintersong on my Kindle but it just never feels like the right time to read it, for some reason?

    1. I felt the same way about Wintersong. I had it for almost a year and I never felt like picking it up. It just felt like a book that I would enjoy but not love. And it seemed like something that had been done before. But after I pushed myself to read it, I kicked myself for not reading it sooner!
