OBSIDIO (Illuminae Files #3)

Written by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Published by Knopf, March 13, 2018

My star rating: 5 stars (a.k.a. all the stars in the universe!)

THE SYNOPSIS:

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken. Find it on Goodreads

MY REVIEW:

This very well may be the shortest review I’ll ever write, which is strange, seeing as how this book has made it’s way on my list of favourite books EVER! But, this is one of those books that doesn’t mess around! Right out of the gate we are thrown into this story and things start happening. I feel that if I talked about anything, I would spoil something, and there’s no way I will spoil this book for anyone! What I will say though, is that this is one of the most amazing and brilliantly written series finale’s I’ve ever encountered. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride that had my emotions on edge, frayed, and destroyed. And I loved every minute of it!

As I just said, this is one of the best series finale’s I’ve ever read. Obsidio brings us back to illegal mining planet Kerenza where it all began. For so long in this series we followed the cast of characters fleeing for their lives from this planet and the BeiTech forces. They were attempting to make it back to the Core and share what BeiTech had done, even if it meant exposing the illegal mining operation. But, after the events in Gemina, that’s no longer possible. The Heimdall station is permanently destroyed, essentially leaving them stranded and searching for another way out. This book brings everything back full circle as they learn that there are survivors still on Kerenza.

But see, this world and its cast of characters is so complex! We have an illegal planet, a rogue/evil corporation, SO many ships, a core universe putting together a trial to try this company, files that bring forth evidence…. It’s a whirlwind of puzzle pieces. But the authors so expertly brought all of those pieces together! I mean it was absolute genius. I never once felt lost or confused, and I was never sitting there wondering who people were and what they were doing. It was like watching the dance of chess pieces moving across a battlefield. It was so incredible!

What was also incredible was the emotions I felt while reading. When I first started this series, I thought that the unique format would be fun to read but would make any emotional connection to the story and characters difficult. Wrong. So wrong. You think you’re fine and not connected until your eyes are leaking all over the place. Yup, I cried three times. My emotions crept up on me like a ninja and I was caught off guard by how much this book effected me. On one page I would be laughing out loud (So loud I scared my dog) and then the very next page I’m gripping the book and feel my blood pressure rise. It was a ridiculous rollercoaster! All of these characters grew so much in this book. We had seen them face unbelievable amounts of horror and still come out fighting. Through their determination and will to survive, we watched them mould into the people they were today, and the family they had become. It was beautiful. If I could choose any book family to be a part of, this is it. They are EVERYTHING!

But be prepared people, this book is BRUTAL! So much death and so much horror. It was a hard read sometimes. But those events only heightened my emotions and connection with the story as a whole.

I wish I could say more but I don’t want to spoil a single thing. Even if you don’t think that science fiction is your thing, I bet you would LOVE this series!

Until next time, happy reading!

So jealous that I can’t read this yet. And thought I’m sure your review is pure gold, my paranoid ass won’t be reading a single word of it until I’ve had a chance to read it.

    1. For me, Illuminae was hard to get into. The first 100 pages felt like a struggle. But if you don’t get hooked right away, give it a chance. I hope you love it!
