Top 5 books that lived up to the hype!

Hype is a touchy subject with me. It’s helped me find some really amazing books that I never would have read otherwise, but, at the same time, it sometimes creates unrealistic expectations. Publishers and social media have gotten SO GOOD at spreading the word about new releases and it sometimes feels like playing roulette – is the book really going to be as good as they say it’s going to be? There is that rare unicorn though. The book that is hyped up so much that you think there isn’t a snowballs chance in hell the book can live up to it, yet it does!! Here are 5 books that I thought would be good but couldn’t possibly live up to the hype:

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in March – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

The hate you give

THE HATE YOU GIVE by Angie Thomas

If there was ever a hyped book – it’s this one. It’s easy for people within the book community to be exposed to hype. But when literally everyone is hearing about a book, even people who don’t read, you know the hype was real. I will admit that I almost didn’t read this book because of how much exposure it was getting. It was so big that I thought there was no way it could really be that good. Then, once day, on a whim, I picked it up. It was one of the best written and most impacting books that I’ve ever read! Yes it was good for the reasons that it was being talked about (the black lives matter movement) but it was just such a BIG story! All of the small elements that brought it together. Finding your identity, strength to speak up for justice, fear, family support and love…. and SO much more! This book went above and beyond the hype which doesn’t seem possible!

Throne of Glass

THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J Maas

I feel like I was last to the Sarah J Maas party. Everyone had been talking about it for years but, for some strange reason, I assumed I wouldn’t like them. They had been everywhere for so long and so many younger kids were reading them (like in the 14 year age range) and I kind of assumed that I was too old for them. WOW was I wrong! The synopsis sounded interesting but it didn’t sound like it would be as exciting as people made them out to be. The whole assassin thing had been done before and I was getting a little bored of that angle. But this series took it to a whole other level!

nevernight

NEVERNIGHT by Jay Kristoff

It’s not a proper post until I talk about this guy lol! But seriously, just like in Throne of Glass, the assassin thing had been done so many times before and I wasn’t sure that this could be that good. Please keep in mind that this was before I realized the true genius of this author! Everyone was raving about how he took this story to heights never seen before and that he made this story/world so dark. It’s easy to claim that a book is dark… this is promised all the time! But almost every time I’m let down. Apparently my mind is REALLY dark and twisted, making it hard to impress me. But this book kept up with its claims and promises!

The book thief

THE BOOK THIEF by Marcus Zusak

This was a little bit of a weird one. The hype slowly crept up until it was everywhere and no one was willing to say anything specific as to why it was just so amazing. I’m thankful that people kept it a secret though! I think it’s very important for people to uncover the emotions all on their own. When the movie was being released, I had literally everyone asking me if I’d read it. Friends, family, strangers – yes, even strangers! They would see me with a book in my hands and excitedly ask me if I’d read it. It was crazy! Thankfully, the book was able to live up to the hype and even exceed it!

ready-player-one

READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline

When I first started watching BookTube videos and following book blogs, this is the book that everyone talked about. I would say it was the book that literally every single person had read, no matter their preference in books! That’s what I found so interesting! People that wouldn’t normally reach for a book like this were raving about it. It seemed interesting to me but I was afraid I would’t be able to get into it. But since so many people seemed to enjoy it I thought I would give it a shot. Thank god I did because it was amazing! It seemed to open up a whole new world of books for me!

Arrow

TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:

Arrow

This list could literally go on forever. Like I said in the beginning, hype has become such a large part of the book community, especially when it comes to social media. There are books out there that disappointed me, but in general, there are so many that impressed me and deserved every bit of hype it got!

Until next time, happy reading!

The Book Thief is one of my favourite books ever! I love how many themes it explores and how dual they are + THUG was amazing! I still have to read Godsgrave, but I’ll probably leave that until before the third book come out so I can binge read it haha. Also I’m so excited for TOG7! I recently read Ready Player One as well. Apparently there’s going to be a second book? I’ll definitely read it, but I would’ve really loved it as a standalone (although there’s so much that was left open, so I’m excited to see what happens).

    1. Binge reading Godsgrave then book 3 is a good idea. Then you won’t have to wait and the cliffhanger won’t kill you!! 😂
Yes TOG 7!!!!! I only recently read Tower of Dawn and loved it more than I ever expected to. My patience is thin in waiting for book 7!
Ya I heard that there was going to be a Ready Player One continuation. I don’t know much about it but I’m so happy!!

  6. Nevernight and The Book Thief are the two on this list that I haven’t read yet, but I can definitely agree on the other three! Which makes me even more curious about those two, haha.

  7. I totally agree with you about The Hate U Give I loved that book, but I really couldn’t get into the Book Thief. 😦

    1. You aren’t the only one that couldn’t get into The Book Thief. I basically forced my mom to read it and she just couldn’t. Different books for different people – so that’s ok! 🙂

Great list! I’ve had some doubts about reading Nevernight just because of all the people who are criticising the way the book had been written… would you consider that a problem, and do you think I should go ahead and read it anyway?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I haven’t seen the criticism about it so I can’t really say. But I personally didn’t notice anything different about the way it was written – so I guess it’s not a problem for me 😂 there were footnotes, which I think might be what they were referring to, and I didn’t see there being a point to them. They were background information that wasn’t necessarily needed for the story, but they were hilarious so I read them anyway 😂

      1. Ruqs says:

Ahh awesome! 🙂 Because I personally dislike reading any explicit romance, is there anything like that within this book?

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Yes. There are a few scenes. Same with Godsgrave. It’s not constant and you could skip those scenes easily though. This is, however very explicit with gore and violence though. It’s a very graphic book in every way pretty much

          1. Ruqs says:

Do those scenes contain content beyond kidding? Ahh ok, thank you so much 🙂

          2. Ruqs says:

oh btw sorry, typo, instead of “kidding” I meant “kissing” but I found out on the Q&A part in Goodreads, so thanks anyway 🙂

  9. The Book Thief and The Hate U Give DEFINITELY lived up to the hype for me too. I love it when a book turns out to be everything you hoped it would be and more!

  11. Ready Player One… one of the best books EVER! I just feel like I didn’t see it a lot until the announcement of the movie. But I’m just glad people are deciding to read it because it’s amazing! Also, Throne of Glass is FANTASTIC! I’m so excited for the finale in October 🙂

    1. I can’t wait for the Ready Player One movie!! I don’t know what to think of the movie after the trailer though. It seems a little weird. It’s coming out soon though so we will find out soon what it’s like!

Nevernight and The Book Thief and both getting read SOON!

    This year, worst case scenario!

      1. J.W. Martin says:

The after thought is only because of ARCs. Without those, Nevernight would be the NEXT book I grab! After Gemina. And Iron Gold. And maybe ADSOM. Possibly Invictus. …Shit

Ugh. That’d be awful. We’d argue over who gets to read what. And neither one of us would want to be the one to go to work.

I read Throne of Glass last year. I liked it a lot, but did not love it. Nevernight though…. absolutely loved that one!

  19. I feel like people just can’t explain what makes The Book Thief great to them! I know it’s hard for me to put it into words. I even wrote a book review on it, and struggled the hardest.

He just announced his next novel today! I preordered it from amazon. It’s called Bridge of Clay. Amazon has the signed US edition on sale for cheaper than the non-signed US edition at the moment (or at least they did at 3 pm!).

    1. I had no idea a new one was announced!!! I’m so excited!! And it comes out this year 🙂 I’ll read anything he writes. I enjoyed I Am The Messenger but it wasn’t quite the greatness of The Book Thief

I’ve heard so many amazing things and I definitely want to read it asap. I loved The Book Thief! THE ENDING THOUGH. 😭 Great post!

    1. Oh god I know! The ending of The Book Thief had me sobbing on the couch. I cried so hard I choked. It was awful!! But great that a book could do that to me! I’m trying to get my daughter to read The Hate You Give. She’s in a reading slump though so I’m not going to push it
