Top 5 Bookish Pet Peeves!

We book worms are very particular when it comes to our reading lives – it’s kind of our passion. And there are certain things that bother us or throw us out of rhythm, causing us to cringe and want to throw our books at your head……. or maybe not because that would be abuse……… to our books……. not your heads. Oh you get the point! We all have our pet peeves when it comes to books and reading and I can’t wait to read what the participants have to say! Here are my top 5 bookish pet peeves 🙂

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming topics in March – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

PET PEEVE #1 – BEING INTERRUPTED DURING THE LAST 25 PAGES OF A BOOK

Why? Why is it that every time I’m down to the last 25 pages of a book someone needs to talk to me? It’s like the last chapter some activates a magnet that draws people over to me all chatty like. STOP IT!!!! I DO NOT want to talk right now! I honestly don’t remember the last time I finished a book in peace……. without having to lock myself in a bathroom and even then I still get interrupted!!

PET PEEVE #2 – FINALLY FINDING THE BOOK YOU’VE BEEN DYING TO BUY BUT IT’S NOT IN THE COVER YOU WANTED – OR WORSE – IT’S THE MOVIE TIE IN!

Living in Canada is kind of a crap shoot when it comes to covers. Sometimes we get the American covers (most of the time) and sometimes we get the UK covers. It’s never a guarantee either way. But what sometimes happens is the web sites will show the cover and I get all excited but when I go into the store it’s not the same. It’s so irritating! And worst of all is if the book is an older release and it’s becoming a movie. All of a sudden the original cover is obsolete and all you can find are covers that look like movie posters. No thank you!

PET PEEVE #3 – WHEN ALL OF YOUR LIBRARY HOLDS BECOME AVAILABLE ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

Once again, I’m starting to wonder if there’s some sort of bookish magnet that I’m not aware of! I usually have about 10 audiobooks on hold at all times. The wait times range from 2 weeks to over a year, which is quite the spread. But every single time one becomes available, 3 others follow! HOW?! Why?! I wait so long for some of these audiobooks and then all of a sudden i’m overwhelmed by them all and have to go back on a waiting list. I wish there was a way to put the hold off for another couple of weeks or something and not have to lose place. Or maybe some sort of “not now sir” button. Something! Help me out here lol

PET PEEVE #4 – CLIFFHANGERS AT THE END AND NOT HAVING THE NEXT BOOK IN A SERIES!

This pet peeve purely has to do with my own impatience! LOL! I’m aware that I have issues being forced to wait for things. And that’s why I will sometimes wait until all/most of the books in a series are released before I’ll start them. But there’s nothing worse than getting to the end of a book and being SO invested in it to have it end suddenly and you’re begging for more. Nevernight was an example for that. I needed the sequel SO badly I could feel my body shaking!

PET PEEVE #5 – BEING A MOOD READER!

Not really sure if this can be considered a pet peeve or not but it’s something bookish that’s really been driving me nuts lately. I’ve always been a mood reader. Sometimes it’s a great thing – it can really enhance my emotional attachment to a book and the characters if I’m in the right head space for it. But here’s the thing – if I can’t figure out my mood then I can’t figure out what I want to read!! And if my mood changes then so can my experience with the book. Lately I’ve been in the weirdest mood ever and it’s been a bit of a flip and flop on a daily basis. I wish I was the type of person that could set aside 5 books that I wanted to read next and pick them up no matter what. It would make life so much easier!!

This was such a fun list to make! I wish I could show my kids and hubby this list so that maybe they would stop bothering me at the end of a book…… doubtful it would make a difference lol. What are your bookish pet peeves? I’m sure I could have made this list a LOT longer!

Until next time, happy reading!

The mood reader thing is so relatable! It’s my personal pet peeve too. It’s even more annoying when I have a pile of library books of different genres that I was in the mood to read when I picked them out – and then all of the sudden I just can’t get into them! This doesn’t help the variety in my book reviews either.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh I was thinking the same thing!! My reviews are always usually grouped by genre. I’m usually stuck on all fantasy, or all science fiction, etc.

Yeah, I realized that the last few books I finished were all some type of fantasy.

I remember you said you use Overdrive and I’m not sure if your library system has the same format but there is an option to put your hold “on hold”. If you log into the e-zone and go under your holds, you should be able to suspend hold. It can be for 7 days or as many as 180.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m not sure if that option is available. I haven’t really looked all that hard. I usually just put myself down for yet another hold if it’s not too long. But I’m going to hopefully look into it tonight

I love this post!! Yes, ad I get closer to the end of a book, I want no one to interrupt me; that’s incredibly irritating!! And I totally get not having the next book in a series… You might forget the plot by the time the next book comes out!!
    Great post!.😀

    1. I’m notorious for forgetting things about a book before the next one comes out! I usually end up searching for a spoiler recount 😂

Haha! Great topic, I am loving it. And, even I get irritated when I get interrupted during the last pages. 😄

  5. Ugh movie tie in covers are the worst! Especially because of how hard it is to find the original covers and plus if I see a movie tie in cover, it feels like I’m going to be reading the movie instead of the book.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Lol I think the same way. I always feel like a movie cover means they changed something about the book. Even if I know it’s the same! 😂

      Liked by 1 person

  6. I am always interrupted near the end of the book! It happens without fail and it is so frustrating!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. So it’s not just me?? I’ve even tried locking myself in the bathroom even though I wasn’t using the bathroom. I just sat on the floor to finish the last few chapters. Of course, that’s when my husband and two kids both decided they needed either me or the bathroom!!

I think this is my favorite top 5 tuesday prompt so far. I didn’t actually know I had that many bookish pet peeves until listing them down. Thanks for this! 😊
I’m also a bit of a mood reader but I’ve long accepted that it’s just unavoidable in my case really. Better moody than a slump ^_^

    1. It’s surprising how many there are right?! And you’re totally right about the mood reading. Anything is better than a slump!

  10. bookmuffin says:

Definitely agree with 1 and 5; people interrupt me all the time when I’m coming to the end of a book, it’s incredibly annoying! I also hate being a mood reader, especially if I’m in the middle of a series and suddenly decide I don’t want to read that particular genre anymore! Great post!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ugh that’s the worst and it happens all the time!! I love marathoning a series but I can never guarantee I’ll stay in the mood for it the whole time!

      Liked by 1 person

  11. Totally agree with movie covers. I can’t stand them. It drives me insane.

I’m also a mood reader! I always buy books with the intention of reading them next, but if I’m not in the mood for a certain genre, they just get put back on the shelf for another time!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I guess that’s the positive thing about being a mood reader – you have books on your shelf that you set aside when you were in the mood for them!

  13. Elley says:

YES to all of these, but especially the mood reader piece right now. I must have picked up (and put down) at least half a dozen books over the weekend because I just could NOT figure out what I was in the mood for!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Same! I hate going through so many books just to pick one!

  14. Harsimar says:

‘Being interrupted during the last 25 pages of the book’ yessss that is the most annoying thing ever. I remember while reading ‘Angels and Demons’, I did actually lock myself in the washroom to avoid being disturbed! 😂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. 😂 that’s a good one to lock yourself away for!

  15. #4 is my biggest pet peeve!! I hate cliffhangers and I hate waiting for the next book! I grew up waiting for the next Harry Potter book to be released and for some reason that didn’t bother me but ever since then it has driven me nuts!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Lol I didn’t mind but did at the same time. I think I just reread all the available Harry Potter’s until the next one came out 😂

  16. Rose says:

I agree with so many of these! I would do anything to not be a mood reader, I’ve not been able to enjoy so many books because of it.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It really does suck sometimes. I’ve gotten good at setting books aside if I’m not in the right mood. You’re so right when you say you can’t enjoy a book sometimes

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Rose says:

I need to learn how to put a book down sooner rather than later when my mood changes haha!

        1. It’s not easy that’s for sure!

          Liked by 1 person

  17. Number 1 happened to me over the weekend…ugh!!
Number 4 – I also love starting a series late for this reason. Just not too late so that playing catch up isn’t too bad.

    Liked by 1 person

  18. This is SO relatable. The library book one ALWAYS happens to me ugh. Or I place a hold on a whole series and get them out of order! (Although with my library, at least, you can pause your hold for a while if you see that a lot of them are coming in at the same time. Not that I ever remember to do this. But it’s worth checking out.)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ugh that’s happened to me too. You hold books 2 and 3 but get the third one first!!

      Like

  19. Oh my word. Yes to so many of these! Movie tie-in covers are the worst! And being interrupted at the end of a book? You’re dead to me. LOL

    Thanks for sharing.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. 😂 omg the next time I’m interrupted while finishing a book I’m just going to mutter the words “you’re dead to me” and see how the person reacts…….. I’ll make sure it’s not one of my children though 😂

Absolutely every single one of these has me nodding my head or cringing! I think the biggest two, that I hadn’t thought about while drafting my own list, was the interruption. NO. NO. NO. There is nothing THAT important that I need to be interrupted in the last 25 pages…(okay, well maybe an emergency).

I am also a mood reader! It leads to me jumping in and out of reading phases. One week I might read a couple relaxing “chick lit” style books, the next I may read all emotionally draining contemporary fiction, then in the middle of a memoir I might not feel it anymore and need something Young Adult. It drives me nuts, but it helps that I have a huge TBR pile! (Although half the time, it is like people that “can’t find anything to wear”, I have hundreds of unread books at my disposal and “can’t find anything to read”…

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahahahaha It’s exactly like the “can’t find anything to wear” problem!! Just related to books! That’s so funny!

  26. Pet peeve 1,2,4,5 are so true to me! I hate it when people interrupt my reading in general, but the last pages are almost always the most intense ones and I hate having to leave my little bubble because someone wants to talk to me. And the mood reading one… jeez i usually only read fantasy/sci-fi/thrillers in the winters but i’ve been in the mood for romances this year? i guess i feel mushy, i have no idea why!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Lol I’ve always read mainly fantasy, sci fi, and historical fiction but lately I’ve been reading contemporary – maybe it’s time all the mood readers got confused all at once 😂

For the first peeve- SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK honestly should we carry a don’t disturb sign??? Can you put people on aeroplane mode????

For the second peeve, oh my lord, the movie tie in- we do not mention that it’s an abnormality and a shame!! I relate so much to this point though omg 😭😭

Omg the fourth one??? Literally what I had to go through with ACOMAF, I was almost shaking as I finally read ACOWAR 😅

The fifth one is definitely also a bookish peeve, I relate to it a lot:))
