Top 5 intimidating books

I guess I should have been a little more specific with this topic, but I kind of wanted to leave it open to your interpretation. I’ve had a couple people ask me if this was supposed to be intimidating books on your TBR or books that you’ve read. My answer – it could be either! I’m choosing to do books on my TBR but you can also choose books that you’ve read 🙂

Some books are intimidating and for different reasons. Some could just be ginormous and you’re wondering how long it could take to read 1000 pages or more. Some books could deal with a topic that you’re not ready to handle. Or some books could have a lower than expected reputation. Here are my top 5 intimidating books on my TBR and why:

OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon is possibly the number one most intimidating book on my TBR – and for so many reasons. Number 1 – it’s huge. The book itself is quite long but there’s also the fast that there are like, what, 8 books in the series so far? I don’t know how many there are. All that I know is it’s a lot! And it’s also intimidating because I know there’s a tv series I’ll want to watch afterwards! AND, I have a feeling that I’m going to go head over heels for the series so I’ll want to continue right away. It’s just a lot to commit to!!

THE BLACK PRISM by Brent Weeks is intimidating for pretty much all the same reasons as Outlander. The books are really long and the series is 4 books long right now. Not sure if there will be more. But it’s also intimidating because it’s an epic fantasy with a new world to learn and a complicated magic system I guess. I’m still so excited for it though!

THE CUCKOO’S CALLING by Robert Galbraith is intimidating for a whole different reason. The books aren’t long and the series isn’t that long, but it’s written by J.K. Rowling so I’m going into it hoping that it will be stellar (because she wrote it) and I’m also worried that it will be like Casual Vacancy (which bored me more than any other book ever has). It’s also a mystery/thriller which is a genre I rarely reach for. I keep putting this series off….

THE GOLDFINCH by Donna Tartt caught my eye as soon as it was released. The cover is gorgeous and the synopsis sounds very interesting, but there’s just something about it that I worry I won’t relate to. For some reason I have this impression in my mind that I would need to be the right type of person to appreciate it. I’m almost positive i’m going to like this but, due to it’s size, I’m worried I won’t like it and waste a lot of time figuring that out. This is one that I need to slap myself in the face to knock out my own assumptions. Because I’m probably going to love it!

I STOP SOMEWHERE by T.E. Carter makes the list for a totally different reason from the rest. As soon as I read the synopsis I knew I had to read it. But I also know that it’s going to touch emotions I didn’t know I had and will crush my heart. I predict me trying to protect the pages from my tears as I read this book. It just sounds so important, heart shattering, and emotional. I can’t wait to read it but I’m a little scared by what it’s going to do to me!

In 2017 my goal was to read a certain amount of pages instead a certain amount of books. I wanted to stop myself from being intimidated by longer books – and it worked! I taught myself that it really doesn’t take that much longer to read a big book opposed to a medium sized one. And I’ve also learned from experience that hard hitting books are sometimes the most memorable. So all of these books on my list are ones that I CAN’T WAIT to get to, intimidation or not. I will probably feel better knowing that I’ve read and conquered them! What are your most intimidating reads?
