Top 5 intimidating books

I guess I should have been a little more specific with this topic, but I kind of wanted to leave it open to your interpretation. I’ve had a couple people ask me if this was supposed to be intimidating books on your TBR or books that you’ve read. My answer – it could be either! I’m choosing to do books on my TBR but you can also choose books that you’ve read 🙂

Some books are intimidating and for different reasons. Some could just be ginormous and you’re wondering how long it could take to read 1000 pages or more. Some books could deal with a topic that you’re not ready to handle. Or some books could have a lower than expected reputation. Here are my top 5 intimidating books on my TBR and why:

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming Topics in February – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

Outlander

OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon is possibly the number one most intimidating book on my TBR – and for so many reasons. Number 1 – it’s huge. The book itself is quite long but there’s also the fast that there are like, what, 8 books in the series so far? I don’t know how many there are. All that I know is it’s a lot! And it’s also intimidating because I know there’s a tv series I’ll want to watch afterwards! AND, I have a feeling that I’m going to go head over heels for the series so I’ll want to continue right away. It’s just a lot to commit to!!

the-black-prism

THE BLACK PRISM by Brent Weeks is intimidating for pretty much all the same reasons as Outlander. The books are really long and the series is 4 books long right now. Not sure if there will be more. But it’s also intimidating because it’s an epic fantasy with a new world to learn and a complicated magic system I guess. I’m still so excited for it though!

The Cuckoos calling

THE CUCKOO’S CALLING by Robert Galbraith is intimidating for a whole different reason. The books aren’t long and the series isn’t that long, but it’s written by J.K. Rowling so I’m going into it hoping that it will be stellar (because she wrote it) and I’m also worried that it will be like Casual Vacancy (which bored me more than any other book ever has). It’s also a mystery/thriller which is a genre I rarely reach for. I keep putting this series off….

The Goldfinch

THE GOLDFINCH by Donna Tartt caught my eye as soon as it was released. The cover is gorgeous and the synopsis sounds very interesting, but there’s just something about it that I worry I won’t relate to. For some reason I have this impression in my mind that I would need to be the right type of person to appreciate it. I’m almost positive i’m going to like this but, due to it’s size, I’m worried I won’t like it and waste a lot of time figuring that out. This is one that I need to slap myself in the face to knock out my own assumptions. Because I’m probably going to love it!

First autumn frost on Stinging Nettle leaves - France - - -

I STOP SOMEWHERE by T.E. Carter makes the list for a totally different reason from the rest. As soon as I read the synopsis I knew I had to read it. But I also know that it’s going to touch emotions I didn’t know I had and will crush my heart. I predict me trying to protect the pages from my tears as I read this book. It just sounds so important, heart shattering, and emotional. I can’t wait to read it but I’m a little scared by what it’s going to do to me!

Arrow

TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:

Arrow

In 2017 my goal was to read a certain amount of pages instead a certain amount of books. I wanted to stop myself from being intimidated by longer books – and it worked! I taught myself that it really doesn’t take that much longer to read a big book opposed to a medium sized one. And I’ve also learned from experience that hard hitting books are sometimes the most memorable. So all of these books on my list are ones that I CAN’T WAIT to get to, intimidation or not. I will probably feel better knowing that I’ve read and conquered them! What are your most intimidating reads?

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. Oh, the first book in a series can be SO intimidating to read, because you know you’ll want to just bang out the rest of the series and before you know it, your entire reading list has fallen by the wayside!

    Great list. 🙂

    1. That’s exactly it! I know that if I start some of these series then all the other books I want to get to won’t get read soon. But I should also be excited that I’m getting through a series……. double edged sword! 😂

  2. Great list! The Goldfinch is definitely on my list of intimidating books as well. I really want to read it, but I am for some reason afraid to commit to it, even though everyone says it’s the perfect book for me.

Oh my gosh, most of the books on your list would be on my intimidating list. I didn’t even think about books that are intimidating because I’m afraid I won’t like them. Like, The Hate U Give is so beloved, so what if I hate it! I don’t want that reality!

As for Outlander, probably my life long favorite, I can see how it would be intimidating. I think if I hadn’t read it as a teenager it would have been on my list for all the reasons you’ve listed, but also because it has such a huge fierce and rabid fanbase – me included. 😀

    1. I don’t think it’s possible to not like The Hate You Give. The hype is a bit scary but it’s warranted. It’s such an important and well written book! Her writing is what makes it so powerful 🙂

omg I definitely agree with Outlander. It’s a book I’ve had on my TBR foreverrrrrr but it’s so intimidating! I read quite a few big books but there is something about this one that just intimidates me. The copy I have also has a really small font and thin pages and it kinda reminds me of a dictionary. Maybe that’s it, ha.

It has taken me forever to finish The Goldfinch, I only finished it last night after starting it in the first week of January, and it’s all because of the reasons you mentioned. Like I experienced with The Secret History by Donna, I had to keep shaking myself throughout to make sure that I was actually taking it all it, very hard to relate to for me personally, but I persevered.

    1. Which one would you suggest to start with – The Goldfinch or The Secret History?

Definitely The Secret History! It’s heavier subject in my opinion, but The Goldfinch took so much mental strength to stay focused and get through it, The Secret History does too, but the storyline was a bit more interesting to me so I really got hooked!

Hi there. I think for me an intimidating book would more be one in which the language used can be hard to get your head around at times. Shakespeare might be a good example. The sort of book where everyone tells you it’s good but you have to ask yourself whether you want to make the effort…especially if it’s long!

I’ve recently been reading Nobel or Man Booker prize winning authors…and as a rule, I find the former much more rewarding than the latter – which seem rather too abstract in some cases.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Agreed. Books where the writing or language isn’t flowing or streamlined can be difficult. I’m the odd one out and Shakespeare is very easy to understand. My high school English teacher was in awe by it and had me help her teach the class. She told me I was a prodigy or something. I thought that was hilarious!

Prize winning books are hard. Sometimes I love them and sometimes I don’t understand them or connect emotionally. But when I do, it’s a wonderful thing 🙂

Hi Shanah! I love the topic for this week. There are some books that I am intimidated by and I’m glad to hear that I am not alone! You are right about length being a factor- I find myself gravitating towards books that are shorter and simpler. However I will also have to remember to not be deterred by the length of a book 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. My goal last year was to read more longer books. It was a really great experience! I found that I actually prefer longer books to shorter ones for the most part 🙂 I’m still intimidated by them though 😂

  28. Outlander is a brick, and the first chapter is about fifty pages long. It makes it hard to get through. I’ve been burned by A Casual Vacancy, so I’m not sure I can get into Rowling’s Robert Galbraith books, either.
