Beat The Backlist Challenge!

One of my biggest goals for 2018, aside from reading 100 books, is to finally start knocking back my physical books that are sitting on my shelves – AKA the backlist! These are books that I’ve had either for years or a few months. Point is, I bought them and didn’t read them immediately!

In 2017 I wanted to stay current with the new releases. I felt like I was always trying to catch up to everyone else and that I was almost the last person to review a book. It worked for keeping up with new releases but unfortunately it pushed back the books that I’m still really excited to read.

This is a personal challenge. Feel free to do this if you want to, but I won’t be doing any sign ups or anything like that. I know that there are quite a few of you out there with a lengthy backlist and are hoping to do the same as me.

So, here are some details. I currently have 115 books on my shelf that are unread and were purchased before December of 2017. I’m not counting any of the books I got for Christmas or any of the books that I purchase going forward. At the halfway point in the year (or quarterly, I’m not sure yet) I will be doing an update post to see how things are going. I don’t know what number I would like to end with at the end of the year. I would LOVE to say that I want to knock back this list by half, but I don’t think that’s realistic. That would mean I would have to read 57 of those books on top of new releases and ARC’s. I’m just going into this knowing that I need to FINALLY get to the books I’ve been excited to read for so long and hope that I’m pleasantly surprised with the number in the end. So far I’ve only read 1 backlist book, but it’s only January so I’m not going to be too hard on myself. If we get to the end of February and the number is still 1…… then i’ve got some serious issues!!

Total number of backlisted books: 115

Total number of backlisted books read so far: 1

Total number left: 114

Do you have any plans to knock down your bookish backlist this year? Is your backlist as ridiculous as mine is?

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. Great idea! I did this last year and while I didn’t have 115 books sitting waiting for me it was still a scary growing pile and it felt really good to finally wade my way through them. I still read ARCs and new releases when I could but for whatever reason watching that physical mountain of TBR books shrink was satisfying haha Now all I’ve got left to go is Wayfarer and Strange the Dreamer then I’m done!…for now at least 😜
    Good luck!

    1. Im glad you were able to knock that list down! I bet it feels amazing! I hope I will know that feeling at the end of the year πŸ™‚ I kept getting books as gifts and buying them on sale knowing that I wasn’t going to get to them. This year things will slow down and I’ll only get the ones I’m really interested in πŸ™‚ strange the dreamer was soooo good! And Passenger and Wayfarer are on that TBR pile πŸ˜‚

I sooooo need a good plan for this. The only way to keep me from adding to my backlist/TBR though will be to stop buying books. It’s a horrible plan.

    1. It IS a horrible plan! Lol I know I’m still going to buy books but I’ve got to be a little more selective about it

I’m definitely doing a Beat the Backlist this year. I’ve listed out my books, and I’ve actually knocked out like 4 of them already. I did sign up for the challenge though, just because I want a chance at winning prizes. πŸ™‚

  7. This is a great idea, honestly. I wish I could get behind it myself but I have toooo many and it will take too long to even choose them xD
However, I wish you the best of luck and hope you can at least knock out as many as possible – the fact that you’re choosing to do it is already pretty darn inspiring ^^
