Bullet journal – End/beginning year set up!

I’ve had quite a few people say that they were waiting until the beginning of a new year to start their journals. I’m trying to get this one out a little bit early so that anyone considering starting fresh in the new year will have ideas of how to track and incorporate their reading and blogging into their journals.

There isn’t a whole lot of personal things that I want to track in a ‘yearly overview’ type layout. Most of that is weekly and monthly. But when it comes to books and blogging I LOVE seeing things together for the whole year! So most of this is books and blogging related. Here we go!

Bujo 13

This was a fun layout to create but, as you can see, I struggled with how I was going to record the rating. First of all, since I was going to be writing a lot, I wanted to keep the layout simple. I record the number of books I’ve read, the title, page numbers, the date I finished it, and the rating. I started off filling in the squares for the rating on the left hand page and it looked awful! But I already started it that way so I decided to finish it. Later on I switched to dots and it looks SO much better!! There are 4 pages for this layout in total.

Bujo 14

This one is all about the blog! I do a chart to visualize my views each month, and I also write down the views, visitors, and comments at the end of the month as well, but I really wanted to see the year as a whole. I find that the year totals give you more of a complete picture of the direction of your blog.

Bujo 16

This page will be my lifesaver!! I always struggle with remembering release dates of ARCS and remembering if I emailed the publisher the review links. I’ve been sticking post it notes to the books themselves but when the post its fall off – it’s not helpful! This way I can keep track of everything all in one place and make sure I’m not constantly looking things up! By the way, the first book is supposed to be Gunslinger Girl – I realized as I was scheduling this post that I messed up – it happens to me a lot!!

These pages are SOO important! I originally started a bullet journal for these pages actually. I needed to have a space to write down all of my ideas in one place. The ideas are blocked out so that they remain a  surprise! I left squares to the left of the topics so that once I do them I can colour in the squares.

BULLET JOURNAL TIP! As your pages fill, it’s sometimes hard to find the pages you’re specifically looking for. Washi tape to the rescue! I put washi tape on the outside edges of the page, making sure that the tape was half on one side and half on the other. That way, when the book is closed, I will see the bright pattern on the edge of the page and know that my ideas are right there! I also don’t have to worry about using sticky notes and having them stick out or fall out.

At the very end of my journal I added these pages. I know that throughout the year I want to track the books I’ve read again, and I also want to track my Top 5 Tuesday topics. I put it at the end of the book so that it’s easy to get to and I’m not flipping pages. If you noticed there’s also a sneak peek to the first topic in 2018 🙂 My journal also won’t get me through the whole year unfortunately. I think I’ll run out of pages in this one in the end of summer. So these pages will need to be transferred to the new journal.

Bujo 15

LAST ONE! This is the only personal layout I want to track for the whole year. I wanted to track my mood as a monthly thing but it won’t give me a really big picture. This way I can see the whole year and if I want to know why I felt that way I can always refer back to my daily spread and see what was happening. I just think that the year as a whole will tell me more. I hope I see a lot of bright pink and orange next year!

Arrow

There’s a lot of things I’ve liked about this journal – but there’s also A LOT that I don’t like! Certain layouts look great while others I don’t even want to look at. I’ve also learned the ways that work for me for recording certain things, and even how I decorate. I know you’re probably not going to love every page, but your first journal will be a learning experience! Try out new things! Not everything works out the way you want but don’t do either of these things. 1- rip out the pages! 2 – don’t give up! Your first journal is where you will learn from your mistakes and find your style. I know I’m going to like (and have more patience with) my second journal so much more!

I didn’t talk about these spreads a whole lot as there’s already so much to take in. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! I’m always open to helping people get more organized! Your stress levels will thank you!

Until next time, happy reading!

Awesome layouts! I plump for the simpler ones for my own bujo but I think that’s cause I’m not particularly artistic!

    1. Markers and washi tape can be your best friend! They add colour without being artistic! Sometimes simple is better 🙂

  2. Your journal looks amazing! I want to start a bullet journal in the new year, and have already gone forth in purchasing one. But I have one quick question, do you also use this as a planner/agenda? If so, where do you put pages such as these ones?

    1. I use my bullet journal as my planner. On top of these types of pages, I also have a page for monthly tasks and then my daily tasks. I have a LOT of daily tasks to remember so those pages are the most important to me. Here’s a link that shows my daily tasks: https://bionicbookwormblog.wordpress.com/2017/11/16/bookish-bullet-journal-november-december/
The most important to me is the daily, tracking my meals, habit tracker, and monthly glances. I will have my January set up posted next week 🙂

  3. I added the mood tracker in my first failure of a bullet journal but I simply didn’t keep up with it. I often forgot to color in some days and then just gave up on it entirely, haha.

I do still have to add a blogging idea-page, but I’m thinking of doing that as a monthly thing so I can just keep it up to date as I go; leaving the used ideas out after every month. I’m still setting it up; I think I was going to start on my weekly spreads for January.
Maybe I have to find a little spot to share my bullet journal as well; just so I can get some feedback of people who’ve been longer into the whole bujo-thing, haha.

    Your spreads look awesome though!

    1. “First failure of a bullet journal” made me laugh so hard because I can totally relate!! I think this was attempt #6 – it took me so long to figure out what works for me. I kept setting things up because they “seemed like a good idea” but I never followed through. Good luck planning for January!!

      1. Oh god.. Mine is attempt #2 so now I’m already thinking how crazy I’m going to get if this one fails as well.. I’m so not ready to try five times before I find something that works for me, haha. Although I’d probably still do it because it’s such a weird relief to have a creative something to lose myself into? I didn’t even realize I was missing something like that in my life until I started it again.
Thank you!! I’ll need it, haha. I was planning on working on it tonight, but I think Heir of Fire is calling my name just that little bit louder. Tomorrow, hopefully!

        1. I think that’s why I kept trying too. I love drawing and colouring, and miss having that creative outlet. It’s something small and not a huge project that needs a lot of my time and effort
          Oohhhh enjoy Heir of Fire!!!!

          1. I suck at drawing, haha. I mostly luck for fun things to print off and then color; more my thing and at least I won’t end up thinking the whole journal is ugly. Or so I hope, haha.

Thank you! I did! I can only read the first part – buddy read, haha – and I flew through that yesterday. So now I’ll be impatiently waiting until I can read on, which isn’t until Sunday. :’)

          2. I threw out 2 journals because I thought they were ugly – yup, I’m THAT person! Lol

Buddy reads are so hard! I’m either the one that’s way behind (99% of the time that’s me) or I can’t stop reading and finish it before the timeline says I’m supposed to! I’m all or nothing 😂

          3. Haha. I’m currently using my failure to try out different layouts in before I actually put them in my decent bujo. It works! And at least the thing still has some kind of purpose this way, haha.

Oh, trust me. I normally have until Friday night to finish the first part of HoF and I finished the first part Monday evening. So now I’m constantly giving that book the stink-eye because I WANT TO READ MORE. :’D

Hi Shanah! These look amazing! I’ve sort of tried bullet journalling over the past few weeks but haven’t been able to stick to it. However, your layouts gave me some great ideas! I love the mood tracker, the blog post ideas and the read in 2017-2018 pages!

Shanah, your journal looks amazing. I really liked the idea of tracking your mood. I did once try bullet journaling but couldn’t get past day 5. I always used to forget to fill it. I am definitely going to give it a try in 2018.

  7. I started my bookish bullet journal in January and I had a reading tracker, a buying tracker (to see how much money I actually spent on books… it was terrifying!!) And I did a layout to see what I was reading the most… YA, New Adult, Adult and also what genre… All went well until these past 3 months I was just procrastinating writing on my journal so it became a huge mess… I’m not sure if I’m going to start a new one we’ll see..

    1. Getting used to keeping up with it is the hardest part. It’s easy to feel frustrated when you’re behind. Good luck if you decide to start a new one! Tracking book buying would totally be a terrifying thing to see on paper!! 😂

  8. great post again!! i love those layouts. i draw a bookshelf for all of my read books, which looks pretty cool, but doesn’t have the finish date or rating. but since i keep an extra book journal, all that info is in there.
i also have the year in pixels because it’s such a great overview. i will definitely keep that next year too. 🙂

    1. I tried the bookshelf set up and my writing was just too big – it looked like a bunch of squares with messy writing all over them! 😂

What a great post, thank you! It has really helped me because I’m starting a journal for 2018 😁 I’m still not entirely sure whether to buy one like yours and design it myself, or cheat and buy the Bloggers Journal from Paperchase, with everything already printed out. As a beginner, I’m afraid I might make it look crappy cos I’m bound to make mistakes! There’s some fab stencils on Amazon I’ve got my eye on too, decisions, decisions!!

    1. I had to google the bloggers journal – I didn’t know there was such a thing! That’s really neat! It would definitely save time on decorating and set up. Looks like a good place to start 🙂

It would save a lot of time, but I think it’s a little less personal. But perfect for beginners like me. Oh blimey, I’m still not sure lol! I’ll have a mooch in the shop and have a proper look at my options I think 😉

        1. It would be perfect for beginners. It would help you transition to getting into the habit of using a journal and you could figure out what works for you and what doesn’t 🙂

  16. I really love the layout of your bullet journal. It has so much information and so many things you can fill out. I would love to do a bullet journal of my own. I just don’t have the time or patience to make one for myself. It would be much easier to have one pre-made. Lol.

    1. There’s nothing wrong at all with premade! The point is to be better organized – that’s all that matters 🙂
