Top 5 books that have been on my TBR the longest

I am the absolute WORST for buying books with the intention to “get to it soon”. Then I get distracted by other shiny beautiful books and I tell myself – “I’ll get to it next month”. Then a year rolls by and I’m still excited to read it but keep putting it off for some reason! The problem is that I’m a mood reader. As excited as I may be, if I’m not in the mood for it, there’s no way I can force myself to read it. So it’s very easy for me to plan to read things soon and then not be in the mood for it for a long time. Here are the books that I’ve been saying “I’ll get to it soon” about for the LONGEST time (in order from shortest to longest)…..

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming Topics in November – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

Mistborn trilogy

THE MISTBORN TRILOGY – SINCE 2014

Yell at me. Scream at me. Tell me I’m an idiot for allowing these books to sit on my shelf. I’m already sitting in the corner, thinking about what I did wrong. Did I mention i’ve also grounded myself? Yell at me – I’m ready…..

In early 2014 I fell down the YouTube hole. I basically watched every book tube video I could get my hands on and I noticed something. Almost every person had read this trilogy and raved about it! Like freak out, crazy obsessed over it. So of course I had to have it and find out what all the fuss was about……. yup…… sitting on my shelves for almost 4 years and I still don’t know why it’s so amazing! I know I’m going to love this series so WHY haven’t I gotten to it? Who knows! I have this on my TBR list for January so I’m making it happen soon!

Frog music

FROG MUSIC – SINCE 2014

I picked up Room by the same author on a whim the day it was released. I knew nothing about it when I walked into the book store but the cover was beautiful, the synopsis was fantastic and unique, and she is an author that lived less than 2 hours from me. I LOVED it so much that when her next book was released I bought it immediately. I started it almost right away too but, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get into it. It just wasn’t the right time for me I guess. But I haven’t picked it up again since. Boo!

A thousand splendid suns

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS – SINCE 2008

The Kite Runner was a book that hit me way harder than expected. It sounded like an OK read but it was the writing that just blew me away. It was so beautiful and emotional and I wanted more! So I picked this one up hoping it would deliver the same punch……. but I wouldn’t know……. because I haven’t read it yet! Why? Couldn’t tell you! I’m sure the reason is that I got distracted by fantasy and wasn’t in the mood for something like this but seriously, this needs to happen! I’ve heard many people say it’s better than The Kite Runner. Soon – I hope!

Helter Skelter

HELTER SKELTER – SINCE 2006

Every once in a while I like true crime books. I love true crime TV too, but sometimes the books are just filled with so much more knowledge and detail. And there aren’t many murders that are more publicized than the Manson murders. I actually don’t know much about this “crew” of insane cult members and the crimes they committed so I thought this would educate me. Well it would…… if I ever read it! I think with this one it’s the size that scares me. Yup, I’m going with that excuse!

Brave new world

BRAVE NEW WORLD – SINCE 2000

Yes, you’re reading this right. I’ve had this book for SEVENTEEN YEARS and still haven’t read it! I read 1984 in high school as required reading and loved it so much that my teacher recommended this one to me. She even gave me a copy. But there it sits, sad and lonely on my shelf, unread. WHY? Really, why? The edition I have is less than 200 pages which makes it one of the shortest books I own. This is just embarrassing!

So there are the top 5 books that have been sitting on my shelf unread for the longest time. I’m hoping that by telling the world that I haven’t read these that it will embarrass me enough to hold myself accountable to read them!! What books have been on your TBR shelf for the longest time?

Until next time, happy reading!

I️ totally get the mood reading thing. I’m impressed by how long some of these have been on your list. *whispers* (you’re not the only one.)

    1. Right?! Ugh it’s so embarrassing. One of them has been there for 17 years! SEVENTEEN!! That’s as long as some of the bloggers I talk to every day have been alive! 😂

Aaaah!!!! so happy to see that I am not the only one who has not read these books. Now it feels like my TBR will never stop growing, thanks to BookTube and book bloggers. But still, I really liked your list ❤ gotta add these books to my TBR.

    1. The TBR will never stop growing. No matter how hard we try to control it, it has a mind of its own! 😂

I haven’t read the Mistborn trilogy either, so don’t worry! I did read Helter Skelter years ago and it terrified me. I have way more than 5 books I need to read so I can’t even begin to list them😁

    1. How was the pace in Helter Skelter? I remember picking it up once and I was just bored. It may have just been bad timing and I should try again sometime
I definitely have more than 5 books on my TBR. Ahem, as in triple digits, cough. No regrets!

  4. I haven’t read any of these books {face palm} Just more books to add to my never ending TBR. 🙂

    1. I feel like there’s a whole lot of face palming happening today! I keep seeing books I want to get to on other people’s lists and I’m like OH YA! I still need to read that one too! 😱

Mistborn Mistborn Mistborn!! Whenever you get to it, I’m here for you to scream with 😀

I’ve been wanting to read Helter Skelter as well! My dad read it and said it was excellent, but pretty graphic. Charles Manson is a fascinating (and completely awful, obviously) person. I love true crime and listen to loads of true crime podcasts, but haven’t read any of it yet.

And Brave New World is excellent, even though Scottish Fiance strongly disagrees with me 😀

    1. Annnnnnd I was waiting for your comment! I keep hearing you talk about Brandon Sanderson in your videos and I feel more and more guilty every time! It’s happening in January!
Charles Manson seems like a very fascinating person (albeit in a very disturbed and awful way) I think I may start this one in the new year and take it a few chapters at a time.
I have a strong feeling I’m going to love Brave New World which is why it makes me so stressed that I’ve chosen not to read it yet! So much readers guilt right now!

Hehehe!! I’m such a fangirl. I do hope you enjoy him though! He’s so good at writing satisfying endings, which isn’t always the case with fantasy!

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I like the sound of satisfying endings! Like you said, endings in fantasy aren’t always satisfying. It’s kind of like throwing stones in the air and seeing where they land!

  6. Ha! I’ve had Helter Skelther (like literally bought the book) since 2004. I refuse to get rid of because for 13 years I’ve told myself, “One day…”

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yay! So it’s not just me?! It’s the worst when you’ve literally had the copy for years and there’s no excuse. The guilt is killing me today!

  7. Steph says:

I’ve had the Mistborn trilogy on my shelf for a while now, I keep meaning to get to it but it does seem sort of daunting! I also feel like I need to be in the perfect mood for fantasy to pick them up, one that will last so I can marathon them! Going in to it with less a less than perfect mood makes me feel like I won’t enjoy the series to its fullest lol.

A Thousand Spendid Suns is FANTASTIC but it’s so painful!! Be ready!! But then again you did read The Kite Runner so I think you have an idea of what to expect!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Exactly! Someone understands! That’s the exact reason why you haven’t touched Mistborn yet. It feels so intimidating and I need to make sure I’m in the right mood. It’s been hit or miss with fantasy for me this year and I was too nervous my slump would make me not like it.
I know I’m going to love A Thousand Splendid Suns. So why haven’t I picked it up yet?! It’s insanity!

  9. And I thought having books on my list from seven years ago was bad! Ha! I have a friend who’s trying to get me to read the Mistborn trilogy…but I’ve just got so many others I should *probably* read first…

    Liked by 1 person

    1. 😂 it’s awful! I can’t even believe I admitted it’s been there for 17 years. That’s as long as some book bloggers have been alive! The guilt will push me to get to these. I promise!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Well, I’m much older than 17 so at least it’s not as old as I am! 🙂 I wish you good luck on that, though — I think the shame would prevent me from reading that book, ever!

        Liked by 1 person

        1. It has. It got to the point where I was just too embarrassed to touch it. But it needs to happen. It’s so short too!

  10. Ha! I’m also a mood reader and seem to be getting worse, so totally understand!

  11. J.W. Martin says:

The only one on your list that I’ve read is Brave New World. Your teacher was right. Very much like 1984. Not as good, in my opinion, but still pretty freaking good! And yes, we’re both Sanderson-avoiders for some reason. But I’m with you on this one. We’ll cross off some of his titles in 2018.

    Liked by 1 person

  12. A Thousand Splendid Suns has also been on my list far too long.

  13. I’m a sucker for True Crime, so I’m gunna HAVE to add Helter Skelter to my TBR.

And I can’t wait for you to read A Thousand Splendid Suns. If you liked The Kite Runner, I’m sure you’ll love it 🙂

Me too – I’m a huge mood reader, so as much as I want to read a book, I often find that I’ll end up putting it off and picking up something else. I haven’t read (or heard much about) any of these books, but will have to look into them and see what they’re about 🙂

  22. I’m a mood reader as well so I’ve had books sitting on my shelves forever before getting to them or donating them. I’m mostly caught up on my books I own (not including e-books). Brave New World is a personal favorite of mine and I would highly recommend reading it! I also have a copy of A Thousand Splendid Suns, but I still haven’t read it for some reason. One day though.

I listened to the first Mistborn book and started book 2 but then it felt like I was in the middle of A Wise Man’s Fear again and so I stopped. I am one book away from giving up on Adult Epic/High fantasy. There is too much setting everything up and not enough actual action/story. It makes me feel like I am playing Barbies again with my sister and we spend two hours setting up the houses and then have no desire to actually “Play” with the dolls.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. There is one high/epic adult fantasy I think you would like. There’s quite a bit of action and political intrigue. That’s Sins of Empire by Brian McClellan. It takes place 10 or so years after an already completed trilogy but it’s not necessary to read that one. I didn’t read it before and I still liked it a lot. If you hate it, don’t shoot me 😂
