Top 5 recommendations for non readers

We all have that friend – the one who doesn’t understand our obsession with books and we are always trying to convert them to read more. And we always have those people who would like to read more and look to us to see what they should be reading. These are the 5 books that I would suggest to those people! There were SOOOO many to choose from but I tried to separate them into the types of people who ask what they should be reading. I could have seriously made this 20+ books long, but, it’s a top 5 list…. come on now.

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming Topics in September! – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

The book thief

FOR THE EMOTIONAL READER:

For the person who likes hard hitting and emotional reads I would have to suggest The Book Thief. This is something that I think anyone can relate to! Yes it’s a super emotional story but there’s so much more to it. There’s history, family, childhood innocence, passion, right vs wrong, a unique narrator, acceptance, love, and so much more. It also helps that there’s a movie to direct them to once they’re done reading!

nevernight

FOR THE FANTASY LOVER:

Everyone loves a good vengeance story! Nevernight is super fast paced so there is never a single moment for the reader to get bored. This is also one of the most brutal and unforgiving novels I’ve ever read! It will give the new reader so much excitement and jaw dropping moments!

the seven husbands of evelyn hugo

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN CHICK LIT:

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was probably the most surprising read for me this year. I typically shy away from Hollywood drama stories and stories of marriages, but WOW!! This was such a complex and beautifully written story about a woman and her life and would appeal to so many people for so many reasons. It was really fast paced which also helps – I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!

dark-matter

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE A GOOD MYSTERY:

I finished Dark Matter almost a year ago and not a week goes by that I don’t think about this book. This book had me downright obsessed and furiously turning pages to unravel this story as fast as possible. While I consider this one a mystery, it’s also in the science fiction genre so it appeals to many different tastes. I actually gave this one to two different people as a Christmas gift last year and both loved it as much as I did!

ready-player-one

TO THE GEEK/NERD FRIEND:

If you know someone that has even the slightest nerd/geek qualities, likes video games, or grew up in the 80’s, Ready Player One is another book that you NEED to recommend! I’ve never geeked out to a book so hard in all my life!! Video games, virtual realities, corporate intrigue, computer science, and so much more! Not to mention the fact that all of the games I played and movies I watched in the 80’s were mentioned and it was a total blast from the past! This is another one that has a movie coming out next year so they will have something to look forward to!

TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:

As I said in the beginning, this list could have been a mile long. There are so many books that I wish I could get people to read ***ahem, dear husband*** and most of these I’ve actually give as gifts to people. What books would you recommend to the non readers in your life??

Until next time, happy reading!

    1. So do it! It’s probably the book I recommend most just because I can’t stop thinking about it! Maybe I’ll reread in October 🙂

    1. Well at least you plan to read them! 😂 these are all fantastic so I know you’ll enjoy them when you get to them. So many books, so little time!

  6. I really like your post, especially how you split it into categories for everyone…great work.. I used to recommend books a lot but it mostly fell in to deaf ears so I stopped…In real life at least, most of my friends aren’t readers at all…

    1. I stopped recommending as well. It was wasted effort lol. If they ask me though I will talk their ears off!

    2. I learned how to recommend books when I worked at a bookstore (and before that, when I volunteered at a library), so I’ve got about five years of quote-on-quote “professional” book recommendation experience. It’s all about making it not sound threatening. Don’t go in over-bubbly like “OMG THIS BOOK WAS JUST ALL SORTS OF YAS YOU NEED TO READ IT!!” because nothing scares someone away from a book like you being super excited.

You need to take the time to find out their interests (and unfortunately, “fantasy” and “chick lit” are rarely on those interest lists: it’s more like “history, maybe?” and “anything that’s not assigned in school” or “I like turtles!”) and then figure out a book that’s not too intimidating-looking (like around 200-300 pages) that matches their criteria.

I always had people come back looking for another recommendation for me. Several parents thought I was a miracle worker because I could get their kids to read when they’d hated reading before.

      1. There is definitely an art to recommending book. I’m that scary intimidating overly excited person 😂 I try not to be but my excitement overtakes me every time!! Lol

      2. That’s great I still try from time to time and do what you said about focusing on the persons interest and works but since I don’t have that many friends who love to read, I’m now putting my effort here on the blog..

  7. I just started Dark Matter — this morning…before work — and want to kick myself because now I have to wait to read more of it! It’s so engaging right from the start. Great list and topic!

  8. With me having worked at a bookstore for several years, this was the post I was most excited to write for September. I basically went through a whole bunch of books that I’d recommended to people (kids/adults/teens/dogs) and picked the ones that usually brought them back looking for another book. I’m glad to see The Book Thief made it on your list (I cut it to put a less-threatening-sounding book on it, because the experiences I had in recommending TBT to non-readers made me sad), and Ready Player One is one that got a lot of teenage guys into reading (which made their mothers very happy and then we went along to find other video game related books for them to read).

    1. The teenage boy reader is always the hardest to figure out! It would be so amazing to work in a book store!

      1. It was great except we had to sell memberships and magazine subscriptions and if we didn’t get the right “metrics” our hours got cut.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Oh ok that’s not fun. I wouldn’t be able to do that! Is that why you used to work there? That would be my reason! 😂

          Liked by 1 person

          1. It’s part of the reason! The other part was that I was coming up on graduating college and was about to take a trip to Europe and I didn’t want to have to worry about taking time off, plus I had a summer teaching job lined up, so it was time for me to vamoose! I do miss the 30% discount I’d get on items, though! Made buying clearance books so worth it.

I work fast food now…and I’m almost longing for the bookstore…

          2. A trip to Europe is a good reason! That must have been amazing!
I graduated college and ended up working in call centres and fast food too. Getting that dream job is never easy 🙁

          3. It was! My dad was in the military, so we actually lived in Germany while we were little (I was 10-13 and my sister was 6-9), and we always wanted to go back. Well, I was graduating college & she was graduating high school, and her French class scheduled a trip (to places we’d never been before!) and Mom said she could only go if I went as a chaperone… It was such a sacrifice, but I suffered through it…

I also decided to go back to grad school, so I’ve gotta pay those student loans back somehow :/

            Liked by 1 person

          4. Sounds like an awful sacrifice. What a great sister you are to suffer through that. Geez! 😂
Oh the dreaded student loan. Gotta love starting off life with debt….. so stupid!

This is such a fun topic 🙂 I haven’t read Ready Player One, but I have heard good things about it overall…also, I think there was a trailer for a future movie that was released a couple weeks ago?! I remember watching that and thinking that it seemed cool ahah 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes there’s a movie coming out next year. Although the trailer looked cool it didn’t hold any details of the quest and nostalgia within the story itself. I still can’t wait for the movie though!

This is such a great list! I know what you mean about being the one that everyone asks for book recs. Sometimes I think that I overwhelm people with my responses. The Book Thief is one that I highly recommend as well. I really should get to Ready Player One soon, though. It sounds amazing. 🙂
