Top 5 Retellings!

I have wanted to do this topic for the longest time! As excited as I am to make this list, in hind sight, I probably should have waited. I’ve read quite a few retellings over the years but they’re something that’s usually hit or miss for me. Either it’s too close to the original tale, it’s too far away or it misses that special spark that I felt with the original. Being honest, that special spark has A LOT to do with it! The happy medium being right in the middle is rare. As many as I’ve read there are still so many sitting unread on my shelves. Too many books, too little time, right? But I’m giving this topic a try in hopes that the participants will talk about the ones they love and I can add some more to my wish list!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in participating I would love to have you! Here is a list of my Upcoming Topics in August – please remember to ping back a specific post of mine so I get a notification and I will add you to the participants list!

Arrow

The lunar chronicles

THE LUNAR CHRONICLES – Marissa Meyer

Hands down my favourite retellings EVER!!!! The characters in each book resembled each of the characters they represented but with an extra special edge! The events were also somewhat similar to the original tale but it was all spun in a science fiction adventure way. I can’t say enough about how much I loved this series!! I especially love that each book explores a new character without really taking away from the first ones presented to you. They add on to the story making is better and complex. If you don’t know, here are the retellings that each book follows: CINDER = Cinderella, SCARLET = Red Riding Hood, CRESS = Rapunzel, WINTER = Snow White.

Hunted

HUNTED – Meagan Spooner

Best Beauty and the Beast retelling! I kind of knew I would enjoy this one but it surprised me how much I loved it. Pretty much all the things I didn’t like about the original story (Ahem…. Gaston, I’m talking about you and your ego!) were taken out and we were left with this beautiful story of a strong girl, with a great relationship with her sisters, a well built world, and a folklore tale that brought it all together. So good!

the-wrath-and-the-dawn

THE WRATH AND THE DAWN by Renee Ahdieh

This one is a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights. Which honestly I don’t even remember anything about the original. But this series – I mean – AMAZING!!! The characters were so great and strong and the world was outstanding! Her writing captured me so quickly and completely. A stunning duology that I actually plan to reread very soon!

nora-and-kettle

NORA AND KETTLE by Lauren Nicolle Taylor

This is a retelling of Peter Pan. Where Peter pan is a homeless “lost boy” living in the subway and Wendy is a privileged girl living a tortured life who needs to fly away. This book was far darker than I could have expected. While I didn’t love it completely, it was still a very different direction to take the story!

The girl who fairyland

THE GIRL WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND IN A SHIP OF HER OWN MAKING by Catherynna M Valente

Ok I’m cheating now. This one technically isn’t a retelling – but it sure feels like one! This one gave me some SERIOUS Alice in Wonderland vibes!! The world and the characters were so fantastical! Like nothing i’ve ever read before really. It set my imagination on this insanely wild ride with magical creatures (and objects) in a world you could never dream of. It’s been a while since I’ve read this one but the creatures that were a part of this story are still in my mind. If you’ve read this one before did it remind you of Alice in Wonderland? I still haven’t read the sequel and I may need to do a reread before I can get to it.

TOP 5 TUESDAY PARTICIPANTS:

Arrow

I feel like I cheated with this one but that’s all that I had. A few more retellings i’ve read I could have added to this list (Flame in the Mist and Heartless) but I really didn’t enjoy those and felt like I would be lying if I put those on a top 5. I know some people loved them but they weren’t for me. I hope that the participants can help me find some more reads so I can do a sequel to this topic next year!

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. We hadn’t really much (or any??) duologies – but TWATD/TRATD was quickly devoured and we absolutely adored!! It was a great suprise and we love it!! XD XD

    1. There needs to be more duologies! There’s something satisfying about only two books to finish a story instead of 3!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Surprisingly we totally agree!! It felt complete and not dragged out like most trilogies – better to be a duology then killing a trilogy…that makes sense right?

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Absolutely! No empty chapters and only two books to wait to!

          1. Hahaha that happens to us all the time – and then we have to be proper ninjas and write fast to explain ourselves…that sounds like we just did something bad…LOL

OMG THE WAIT!!! The wait would finally be reduced but the books would be just as juicy (?)!!

  2. I love retellings too and I will have a post about them soon, about the stories that should be told more, because there are some that we see around all the time like the Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland (don’t get me wrong I love some of them but it does tend to get tiresome to just find the same retellings all the time.Don’t you think?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Absolutely! I love the retellings that cover the lesser known stories! As much as I love Beauty and the Beast but it’s been done so many times!

I’ve only read Cinder but I really, really liked it! I completely agree with you: it’s familiar, because it’s similar to the original story, but it has its own twists. I thought it was kinda predictable, but I’ve heard the series gets better. I’m now reading Scarlet. I’ve only read until the end of Part I, but I’m enjoying it so far 🙂

    1. I hope you enjoy it! Most people say Scarlet was their least favourite but I still loved it. Cress was probably my favourite. You’ll get to meet Thorne!!!

One of my favourite things so far is that they mention people that I know will appear in the future, but they have no idea haha

    1. It’s very complicated because there are soooo many different worlds and characters! But it was beautiful! I hope you love it when you get to it 🙂

  6. Nora & Kettle was a Kindle First book (or did I get it from BookBub?) a few months ago. I’ve got it downloaded on my Kindle but I haven’t started it yet! I’m super excited to, though!

    1. It’s very dark and sad. Lots of triggers for mental and physical abuse. But it was still a good read!

Oh my goodness, everyone raves about the Lunar Chronicles! I feel like the only person who still hasn’t read them! They’ve been on my TBR list for years, though!

I love this book tag! I follow Rachel and saw her doing it; I think I might take it up as well!

I loooooved The Lunar Chronicles, though I’ve read a lot of criticism about them regarding how they portray Asian cultures. I still need to read Winter to finish up the series!

I’ve always wanted to read The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland but I’m almost…apprehensive? I’ve read Valente’s Deathless and it was so strange and confusing I have to think really hard about reading another one of her books.

People are far too sensitive about things. They need to realize that it’s a FANTASY set in a different world!! Drives me nuts! 😂

Have you ever read Entwined or Wildwood Dancing? It’s been ages since I’ve read either, but they are both retellings of the twelve dancing princesses. Though, Wildwood Dancing also adds in elements from the frog prince and some vampire-ish sorts of creatures. I love both.

I also read the first book of the lunar chronicles when it first came out, but I never found the time to pick up the others. I’ve been meaning to get back to it for AGES since I adore fairy tale retellings.

I’m definitely adding all of these to my TBR because I was just saying how I wanted to read more retellings! I just bought Heartless by Marissa Meyer which I was excited about because I love Alice in Wonderland, but I haven’t heard very good things about it 😦
