Top 5 Worst Book To Movie Adaptations

Last weeks Top 5 Tuesday topic was the Top 5 Book to Movie Adaptations where I featured my favourite adaptations. And where there’s good – there’s bad! It’s all a balance thing, right? Now when it comes to book to movie adaptations, there are quite a few we as book lovers weren’t happy with! They usually find a way to skip some of our favourite parts and there isn’t enough time to fit in all that detail. But I warn you – there may be some unpopular opinions on here! So if I’ve listed one that you love, I’m sorry! But before you have my head on a spike – read why it made my list!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in doing my topic on your blog feel free! Here is a list of my upcoming topics if you’re interested in participating in future Top 5’s!

TWILIGHT

Sorry to all the Twi-hards out there but this one HAD to make the list! When the movies came out I was all over them! I basically watched them on repeat and counted down the days till the next movie. At the beginning of this year I decided to watch the movies again  – I laughed – as in, uncontrollable laughter – the whole way through. Taking a break from them for a few years I realized just how insanely cheesy these movies are!!!

THE GIVER

I wanted to love this one so badly! I read the first book in the series a few years ago and was so overcome with the whole story. I immediately bought a bind up of all 4 books in the series and marathoned the whole thing. I would stay up until 2am reading and then wake up, wide eyed, at 6am to read again. The books were just so incredible. The movie didn’t even come close to the same feel in the book. I can’t explain it, but when reading the books I was transfixed but my feelings and emotions. The movie was just flat and blah. It missed the mark completely somehow.

THE GRINCH

What in the living hell were they thinking? This is just weird, ugly and NOT the story or cartoon I grew up loving. I just can’t. I can’t.

CITY OF BONES

This movie wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. I just found it to be so boring and underwhelming. It hasn’t even been that long since I’ve seen it but I honestly can’t even remember who was in it and what happened. I think the only character I liked that did justice to the book was Magnus Bane. And maybe Clary. I preferred movie Clary over TV Clary. Other than that, I honestly can’t remember anything about it. And that’s not a good thing at all.

THE HOST

I’m pretty sure I never even finished watching this movie – it made me THAT angry! The book was downright amazing. It’s one that took about 120 pages to get into, but when I fell, I fell HARD. I remember finishing the book and crying so hard that my shirt was soaked with my tears. But the movie was just blah. It held no emotion to it whatsoever. It was just a bunch of people moving from point A to point B. Yet another one that completely missed the mark. Sorry Stephanie Meyer, but the people that make your movies just don’t capture your writing. Make them stop lol.

Are there any books that were turned into movies that missed the mark for you?

Until next time, happy reading!

  1. I haven’t watched any of these! 😂 I’ve stayed away from The Giver and City of Bones adaptations because they looked awful! I watched The Host and has never read the book and the movie is so cheesy. 😂

    1. If you liked the movie the book will be so much more! I think that the movie would have been good if I hadn’t read the book yet. I hope you get the chance to read it!

I haven’t read twilight but agree that the movie is cheesy haha… one of the movie adaptations that I am not fond of is The Martian. After having read the book, I expected the movie to be just as amazing but it was disappointing! However people who haven’t read the book loved the movie. I wonder if it is all relative xD

    Cheers,
    Sophie

    1. You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that!! The Martian almost made the list. It missed every single part that make me laugh out loud while reading. And the disappointing thing – they set them ALL up but just never followed through!!

I agree completely! Also, I think it was difficult for Mark’s thought processes to be expressed on film, compared to the book. It seemed like he was staring at potatoes for much of the time haha..

I completely agree with you here, especially on City of Bones – the movie just felt flat and uninteresting compared to the book. It was a bit of a shame :/

  5. I actually love the The Host movie! But to be fair, I watched it before I even knew it was a book adaptation! And the only reason I like the City of Bones movie is because Lily Collins is in it! And she does a much better job at portraying Clary as the TV show actress 😂

    1. Yes she is soooo much better as Clary! I actually enjoyed her playing the character. But the movie itself didn’t do her any favours. I feel it played more into the romance, emotions, and relationships than the action. Missed opportunity

The City of Bones adaptation was AWFUL! I hated it so much. I’m not the biggest fan of the TV show either but it’s a massive improvement.
I really liked The Host but haven’t seen the movie yet and now i don’t plan to lol. XD
Hate when adaptations mess up the original story ugh!

My left brain thinks the above written!!! Left one thinks you should add the divergent series to this!!!

    1. I actually didn’t mind the first one. The other ones – yes!

yeah…actually I think the most cute scenes where removed from the movie.
And the divergent series was more of the last two movies than the first one, the book wasn’t. The excellence of the first one(book) made the other two mediocres(movies) watchable!

  8. Very interesting to see the different opinions! I actually loved The Host and City of Bones. Though they had big differences from the books, I still felt like the feel of the stories and characters were there. I only watched the first episode of Shadowhunters and could not keep watching.

    1. I got about half way through the first season of the show and the only reason I got that far was the guy that plays Jace – his eyes!! 😍

      1. Lol. I loved the movie Jace. But that is still a very good reason ;-P .

100% agree with you on Twilight and The Shadowhunters! The first Twilight was good I think but the rest…

  10. Could not agree more! I also have a huge problem with Stephen King movies. The books are amazing, but the movies stink! I do have high hopes for the new It movie, though.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I haven’t read too many Stephen king books so I’m usually ok with the movies. Reading more Stephen King is one of my goals for next year. I won’t be watching the new It. I am TERRIFIED of clowns!!

Great list! I remember watching the Twilight movies over and over again too 😛 And I completely agree about the Host!! I loved the book, but that movie … I didn’t hate it, but it could have been so much better :/ I can’t say a thing about city of bones, though. I admit that it’s not a good adaptation, but it was the movie that made me want to read the books, and so I love it haha

  12. I prefer movie Clary, too! And, lol, ‘make them stop’ xD
