Top 5 Popular books I don’t plan to read

Before I even get into this list, I realize that these opinions could be very unpopular! But please remember that these are books that I don’t plan to read but I’m not swearing off of them completely. I could pick them up later on down the road. My reading tastes are always changing and evolving so I may become interested in them later. But, for right now, I don’t plan to pick any of these up. And please remember that these are my opinions alone! I’m not saying that any of these are bad books!!!! So if any of these are your favourite I’m not meaning any offence!!

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme where I explore different topics. If you are interested in doing my topic on your blog feel free! Here is a list of my upcoming topics if you’re interested in participating in future Top 5’s!

Red queen series

THE RED QUEEN SERIES by Victoria Aveyard

WHY I DON’T PLAN TO READ IT –  The girl living in poverty thinking nothing will ever change for her, then all of a sudden she realizes she has powers, there’s a resistance, guards….. let me stop now. Basically, this series has all the tropes that I’ve had enough of. I don’t feel as though there’s anything unique about this series that’s drawing my attention. I’m just over it. Not to mention others who have similar taste in books as my own have said that they were really disappointed in these. I’m not saying these are bad books by any means, they just don’t call out to me personally. I’m also not a fan of the covers at all. Sorry!

Grisha.png

THE GRISHA TRILOGY by Leigh Bardugo

WHY I DON’T PLAN TO READ IT – I read the Six of Crows duology and LOVED it!! The characters were so relatable, the plot was so unique, and – KAZ!!! He is hands down one of my favourite characters of all time! He’s willing to make himself look like the bad guy in order to protect his group of misfits. He has a master plan for every outcome that no one knows whats happening until the dust settles. I picked up Six of Crows before I even realized that it was “related” to the Grisha trilogy and I don’t find that it ever really impacted my enjoyment of Six of Crows. I was never confused and I felt that her world building throughout Six was complete enough that I don’t need to go backwards and read the Grisha trilogy. I know that they’re only really set in the same universe and not really related at all, but I just don’t feel drawn into the series at all.

History is all you left me.jpg

HISTORY IS ALL YOU LEFT ME by Adam Silvera

WHY I DON’T PLAN TO READ IT – I’m on the fence with this one. I read More Happy Than Not by the same author last summer and I enjoyed it at the time I read it. But the more I’ve thought about it since, I’m not sure that his writing is for me. I didn’t relate to it emotionally as much as I wanted to and I feel a little too old for the story. This one does sound like it would be a little easier to relate to than his other book, but I still don’t know that it’s something I would put high up on my to read list. I’m not a huge fan of YA contemporary to begin with so that doesn’t help!! I may pick it up in audiobook form later if it’s available, but as I said, I don’t see myself seeking it out. The message does sound important though!!!

Lord of shadows.jpg

LORD OF SHADOWS by Cassandra Clare

WHY I DON’T PLAN TO READ IT – Yes, you’re yelling at me through your screen right now – I’m sorry!! I’ve read all the Mortal Instruments series and liked it, and the Infernal Devices series is one of my all time favourites, but Lady Midnight was a big disappointment for me. I struggled SOOO hard to make it through that book. It’s the same unattainable love, who to trust, shadow hunter plot line and I just can’t do it anymore! I’ve outgrown this series and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to it. But will I reread the Infernal Devices trilogy again – YES!! And hopefully soon!!

Geekerella.jpg

GEEKERELLA by Ashley Poston

WHY I DON’T PLAN TO READ IT – Please don’t unfollow me for this one! I have no desire to read this whatsoever. I get it – it sounds cute – but it also sounds like it’s trying to cash in on everything popular in YA books at the current moment. Geek love, a retelling, conventions, romance, nerd culture, fandoms and more. I’m a total geek so it reaches out to me on a certain level. I was bullied for years because I wouldn’t fit inside the “normal” box. And these characters even sound like they could be friends of mine. But I don’t want to read about it. Like I said, this book does sound adorable and cute, but it just doesn’t sound like the right book for me – I feel like I’m waaaayyy too old for it!!

If you’re still reading this then you haven’t thrown your phone or computer in anger. I thank you from the bottom of my heart! There are just so many amazing books out there in the world and too little time to read them. Some books jump out and grab your attention, and some you need to put aside. Like I said, I’m not going to say that I’ll NEVER read these, but they won’t be happening any time soon!!

Are there any popular books you don’t plan on reading?? I’m curious if there are other unpopular opinions out there!

Until next time, happy reading!

No, I love History Is All You Left Me and Red Queen and Lady Midnight! Those are some of my favorites! I agree with you on the Grisha trilogy and Geekerellla. I didn’t like Shadow and Bone, so I just never finished the series, and I don’t like adorable contemporaries or contemporary in general, so no thanks! 😂

A big AMEN to every single book on this list! I tried to read Red Queen and it was horrific.

    1. I was hoping someone wouldn’t be offended by my choices! There are some rave reviews for these but I just don’t feel a need to read them. There are so many other books in he world I need to get to – time travel, I need time travel! I need to be able to create an extra day where I just sit and read in the woods alone somewhere!! Lol

lol I know what you mean. I could use a time machine too. I think this week alone there are 3 books coming out I need to get. I agree with you on the new Shadow Hunters’ series massively. I loved the previous two series’ but now if feels like they are beating a dead horse. Write something different.

  4. I had similar feelings about Red Queen before I picked it up-I would say at least try it out (only because I love it), but I feel the same for Geekerella. It sounds adorable-but maybe it should be down an age category. What draws me to other fairy tale re-tellings is that there is something unique to them-but Geekerella sounds less like a re-telling and more like a re-branding.

    1. That’s my thoughts exactly with Geekerella. I love retellings but I’m drawn to them by the uniqueness that they add to make it their own. My mom owns the Red Queen series so if I’m ever stuck I may try it out one day

  6. I own the first book in the Red Queen trilogy but I bought it YEARS ago! And at the time I probably would have loved it! But now whenever I read the synopsis and try to see if it’ll interest me enough to read it, I just feel like it’s a recycled story and there’s so many other and better Fantasy books out there!
And I read the Grisha trilogy before SOC and I loved it but it has mixed reviews and I can see why it might not be for everyone!
And noooo Gekerella was one of my favourite reads this year! But it’s fine, we all have different tastes and I accept your decision 😛

    1. Geekerella might be one that I pick up later on down the line when I need something light and fluffy. But I’m old! Lol I don’t know that I can relate to this as much as I would have many years ago lol

      1. That’s true! I feel like Geekerella targets a younger audience so I get why you wouldn’t want to read it 😀

I havent read Six of Crows yet because I’m struggling to finish the Grisha trilogy, read the first book years ago and then lost interest. I have no interest in reading Geekerella either, Red Queen you’re not missing anything. I dont plan on reading Lady Midnight so i can say you made good choices 😂❤

  8. I totally get you. While I’d read some of these *cough*Greekerella*cough*, I think not every books is for every person. And I’m so glad to know I’m not alone with the Red Queen. I actually did read it, but didn’t like it and thought I was the only one. I had a problem with it I could never get over. Anyway, I like your list 🙂 No computer throwing here, lol

I completely understand your opinions about the Grisha Trilogy. I read it before Six of Crows but I still understand where you’re coming from. I liked the series OK and it definitely got better over time but I never truly fell in love with it. More because of the characters than the world. Then I read the Six of Crows duologu and I absolutely fell in love. It is one of my favorite series.

I wanted to love the red queen Siri so much. The idea of it was so intriguing but I wanted to love the Red Queen series so much. The idea of it was so intriguing but I found that I had to push myself to read it. Red Queen was slow to start and I didn’t find Mare likable, then Glass Sword was the hardest to get through, but King’s Cage redeemed itself a little. I don’t regret reading this series but it also hasn’t made an impact on me.

I’m personally really excited about Lord of Shadows, but that might just be me getting swept up in the hype. I still loved Lady Midnight, but it wasn’t my favourite of the Shadowhunter Chronicles – but it seemed to be a lot of people’s favourites and hearing them talk about it seems to retroactively have made me love it. We’ll see when I re-read it in a few weeks.

Anyway, great post! I loved reading about the series or books you didn’t expect to read, and why.

    1. I wanted to love Lady Midnight so badly!! But for some reason I just couldn’t connect with the characters or the story. And the reviews about the red queen series say just what you said. That it was ok but didn’t leave an impact.

  11. You are totally right about the Red Queen series! Well, I’ve only read book one but it was so full of tropes and I found the main character one of the most annoying I’ve read about. You aren’t missing anything, don’t worry! I don’t think I plan on reading the Shadowhunters, although that isn’t a definite. If I feel like reading it, I will!

    1. Thanks for making me feel better about my decision lol. I have such little free time to read so I try to fill my time reading interesting stories and characters I’ll like 🙂

The Red Queen was pretty bad. It has a beautiful cover, one of my favorites actually, but that’s all it has going for it. She repeats the same lines over and over and doesn’t do anything interesting with the plot. I struggled to finish it.

Geekerella is very sweet book, but by no means a ‘YOU MUST READ THIS BECAUSE IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND’ book. Consider it for a rainy day when you want a fast and fun read.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. That’s what I was thinking about Geekerella. If I’m looking for something quick and light this summer I may look into it. I haven’t written it off completely

  14. I read Six of Crows first, and then of course, I tried the Grisha trio because I mean, with the love of SOC, how could you not want to read more of Bardugo’s book. However, you could just tell that it was the first book, and it just felt like SUCH a letdown for me. I was constantly comparing it to SOC and it just didn’t live up. So, I can understand the no appeal. Wonderful post! 😀

    Liked by 2 people

    1. That’s kind of why I don’t want to read it as well. I know I would be comparing the two series and I don’t think Grisha will live up to SOC

  15. I can definitely understand why you don’t want to read the Grisha trilogy after reading Six of Crows. I read the Grisha Trilogy first and I enjoyed it a lot, but honestly, if I’d read SOC and CK first I don’t think I’d have enjoyed the trilogy as much and probably woudn’t feel a huge draw toward it either. Like, I didn’t even expect SOC to be the level of amazingness it was because I wasn’t blown away by the Grisha Trilogy, so it was great to have my expectations really exceeded by SOC.

Though I’ve read Red Queen and suffered through Glass Sword, I’ve long decided to give up on the series. Everything else on your list isn’t an unpopular opinion for me – because I don’t plan on reading any of them either 😀 Even I don’t think my love for SoC duology was affected at all by my not having read the Grisha trilogy, so I’m no longer interested in it. I’m just not interested enough in History Is All You Left Me and Geekerella and there are WAYYY more books I would like to read instead of those two. As for Lord of Shadows, I hate Cassandra Clare books so there’s no way I’ll read the Lady Midnight series 🙂

I read Red Queen and Glass Sword and if I thought the first one was okay, the second one was just so, sooo hard to get through – I think I might give up on this. All of it to say, I don’t think you are missing out on this 🙂

I’m definitely with you on the Red Queen series – I have 0 desire to read those books. They just sound so cliche. And, I don’t particularly like dystopian novels which I’m sure doesn’t help.

I one the fence with all others (aside from Lord of Shadows – I’m complete trash for the Mortal Instruments world). There are just so many other things I’d rather pick up, but I may get around to them someday.

  20. I totally gave up on Red Queen series. When I first read it, I was like like OMG BEST BOOK EVER. But then I started wondering how much of that excitement was really mine, and how much was because of the hype that surrounded it. It was an ok book, but soon I found better books to read, so… nope.

And Geekerella! I did read it, and liked it, but it’s true. It has all those things and all in all, it’s a cute book. There is a similar one I will never stop recommending: Cinder and Ella, by Kelly Oram that is all those things PLUS deals with issues like bullying, and having an MC that was in accident and has a lot of scars, both inside and out. It’s a beautiful book. So if you haven’t read it, and Geekerella appeals to you but it’s like meh, then maybe Cinder & Ella would be a better read for you? 🙂

    1. I’ve never heard of that one. I’ll have to do some research. Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

I’m sorry but we can’t be friend anymore! LOL. I’ve read VictoriaAveyard series and Lady Midnight loving both. As far as The Grisha is concerned… it’s been a little disappointing… I should think about series or books I don’t plan reading.

I’ve read Red Queen and even tho I didn’t dislike it, I’m not sure if I want to keep reading the series, it’s like you said, it has already been done a million times before. I don’t want to read the Grisha trilogy either, but I’m very interested in Six of Crows! And I understand why you might not like Geekerella, that book could get a bit cheesy sometimes :/
Out of your list, I really want to read Lord of Shadows, though, but I have to read Lady Midnight first 😛
