Tracking your reading progress?

Out of curiosity – how do you all track your reading progress? I only started using Goodreads on a consistent basis about three years ago. Before then I had downloaded and deleted the app more times than I could count. It seemed to take me forever to understand and appreciate it but now, it’s become a slight obsession. (By the way – be friends with me here!) I can’t read a book without adding it to my “currently reading” shelf so I can watch the percentages move as I read through the book. I also really like that it tracks what I’ve read and I can look back to see the date I finished it as well as how long it took to read it. More recently, thanks to a Books Amino member, I realized that if you’re on your Goodreads account on the computer you can see not only the books you’ve read through the year, but you can see the amount of pages read as well. If you’ve followed my blog for a while you’ll know that my goal this year is to read a certain amount of pages over a certain amount of books. I felt myself gravitating towards smaller books so that my book count could be higher. That’s not fair to myself at all! Last year I missed out on so many great books because of their size. I am reading some shorter books this year but the 500+ page books no longer scare me and I actually look forward to them!

But aside from Goodreads (if you use it) do you track your reading process any other way? I know some people choose to have a notebook where they write down the title, number of pages, date started, date finished, and more. I tried this but ended up forgetting to write it all down when I was done.

I’ve also heard a few people talking about an app that will even track how long it takes you in hours/minutes to finish a book! It sounded so interesting and now I can’t remember the name of the app for the life of me. I guess when you start reading you hit the timer on the app and then stop it when you stop reading. But there are two problems with using that app. First, I would pretty much always forget to stop the timer so it would  end up telling me that it took me 100+ hours to finish it. Also, I was told, that the first 5 book entries are free and then you need to pay for each book afterwards. I would go broke with this.

I searched “tracking your reading” in the Apple app store. Just a few of the options that popped up were Bookshelf, Bookling, and Reading List. All three seemed to have the same function function as Goodreads but Bookling was one I was most attracted to. I liked the design and the function was very close to Goodreads. You could track your pages read and it would tell you your percentages. You could set notifications and reading goals and it would even give you achievements. The cost was a one time fee of 1.39$ (I believe it’s one time), but I haven’t tried this yet. I really like being able to talk with other people in the Goodreads community and I’m not sure if that’s available on this app.

Aside from all those things I do keep track of the books I’ve read throughout the year in my bookish bullet journal. For christmas I got a beautiful Harry Potter Marauders Map moleskin journal and what better to fill it with other than everything related to books?! I plan on doing a post dedicated to what’s inside my bullet journal soon! This book has become my life source when it comes to blogging! I keep tracks of my posts,  random blog post ideas, top 5 Tuesday topics, monthly information, books read and more. Here is a sneak peek of two of my pages where I’ve kept track of books read:

So how do you keep track of your books and pages? I’m always looking for more fun and interesting ways! Can’t wait to hear some of your ideas 🙂

Until next time, happy reading!

I also track my books on Goodreads, but I brought a journal with me to the Peace Corps and so I tracked the total books that I’ve read while in the Peace Corps as well. I’ll just write the title and the author, mostly because I’m curious how many books I read while here and that’s a lot more difficult to figure out on goodreads since I didn’t start in January, but came to Guyana in April of 2015. Your bullet journal is gorgeous though and I wish mine was pretty like that.

    1. Wow you’re in Guyana in the Peace Corps? That’s pretty crazy! I had no idea. The things you must have experienced over the years is probably incredible!

Yeah, it’s so different here. But I built a library at the school where I was placed, so I get to share my love of books with everybody. My favorite thing has been to introduce them to Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, the Series of Unfortunate Events, etc.

Your journal looks lovely. I always forget to track my reading progress. Sometimes I use Goodreads, but I also have a journal. I always write down the title, author, rating, genre, setting and in which language I read the book.

I literally just use the Notes app on my phone now. 😂 I used to use Goodreads, but then I quit, so there went that! I was using a great app called Book Buddy, but then it alerted me that after a certain number of books added, I’d have to pay for the full version. So, now I’m just using the Notes app at this point.

    1. Did you post about it on books Amino? It might have been you that mentioned that app because they mentioned they were going to stop using it because they had to pay! Lol

Never in a full post, but I did tell people it was a good app to use to track your books! It still is, if you’re willing to pay. 😂

      1. Hahaha! It’s not bravery so much as being forced to learn how to use them for work. 🙂

Your notebook is so cute! I bought a Quibbler notebook to keep track of my reading/blogging but I haven’t used it yet so that was a waste.
I use only Goodreads to keep track of my reading and I only started updating it regularly in 2016. I haven’t heard of any other reading tracking apps but I’m sure there are several! Though I don’t think I’d pay for one when Goodreads is free and apart from the search being a bit annoying, it’s completely fine.

  6. Aside from Goodreads, I have a notebook where I list the books I’ve read. It is updated as my Goodreads, too. 😄 Your notebook is much cuter, btw. 😄

    1. Awe thanks! I have attempted bullet journalling over 10 times throughout the years and I always end up hating it so I throw them away. This one I am *mostly* happy with lol

I’m pretty sure the app is called BookOut bc I have it. It will only do 10 unless you upgrade (and I did). It’s pretty awesome.
And I use LibraryThing for keeping track of my physical books in my library…it’s amazing.

  8. I just use Goodreads. Honestly, I’ve never thought about using anything else, though maybe I should? I know if I hand write it that it won’t get done. But it is a lot of fun to update it on goodreads. I like seeing my progress get updated 🙂

  10. I’ve been using Goodreads for years and I love looking at my progress on the graphs too!. I love your journal but I don’t think I be diligent enoughto make handwritten notes with each book. 😕

  11. I need to keep track of my reading better… my organisational skills are average at best :/ I try and use goodreads when I can! This post has been very helpful, thank you 😀

  12. I for the most part just use goodreads as it is so easy! But I also keep a journal with series that I still need to finish and so I can keep track of release dates for the next book as well as a list of what I have read!

I would really love to use a bullet journal to keep track of my reading. Right now, I just rely on Goodreads. I do keep a short-list TBR in my daytimer to keep track of my blogging schedule as well. One day I will get a little more creative like you! 🙂

    1. I’ve tried bullet journalling SOOO many times throughout the years but it finally stuck. It’s been a huge help. But finding a system that worked for me was the hardest part!
