Top 5 popular books I HAVEN’T read

This topic is making the rounds over on the Books Amino app and I thought that if I put down the books I haven’t read yet in hopes that it will give me proper motivation to pick them up sooner than later! I’ve been in a bit of a strange reading mood lately. When I’m picking up a new book I find it impossible to choose what to read because I basically want to read everything. And then, when I finally choose a book, I’m finding it’s taking me a very long time to get into it. When things finally click I feel like i’m immersed in the book though, and manage to finish it quickly. But nothing seems interesting in the beginning and I feel like I’m forcing myself to read. I wouldn’t call this a book slump because I’m still really motivated to read, but choosing and starting books feels like torture right now!

By the way, does anyone else have the Books Amino app? If you do, I’m on there as Bionic Book Worm 🙂 I love the exposure books are getting on the app not to mention the conversations I’ve had with people. It’s a fantastic app!

Top 5 Tuesday

Anyway, on with my top 5!

Mistborn trilogy.jpg

THE MISTBORN TRILOGY by Brandon Sanderson:

This is the one that I feel the most shame over. There’s really no excuse for me to not have read these yet!! When I started watching You Tube (Book Tube) videos a few years back, these books were everywhere. Everyone was talking about them and all the reviews were glowing and positive. And still, a few years later, these books continue to be everywhere! I’ve had them on my shelves for over a year but when it’s time to choose a new book I pass these up and there’s a few reasons for that. Number 1 – The reviews have been so positive that I want to make sure that I have enough time to dedicate to these. I’m afraid that life will get crazy and I won’t be able to focus on these books as much as I should. Number 2 – I have so many series that I started last year I wanted to finish/catch up on those before starting a new series. Number 3 – I’ve hyped these up so much in my mind that I’m afraid I won’t like them. This is all just irrational. I know. I just need to read them already!

Red rising trilogy.png

THE RED RISING TRILOGY by Pierce Brown:

I think this may be a theme. Most of the popular books I haven’t read yet are a series or trilogy. As I said above, I wanted to catch up on the series I started last year. Also I marathon’d a bunch of series from start to finish last year so I’ve been in the mood for some stand alone’s. I have a friend who read this series and has threatened physical harm if I didn’t read them…….. shhhhh! She doesn’t know I still haven’t read them!! Once again, I own all the books, so there’s no reason for me to not have picked them up yet!

Truthwitch.jpg

TRUTHWITCH by Susan Dennard:

Ok, this one I’ve actually attempted to start quite a few times but never made it past the first three pages. I’m not sure if this is due to my weird reading mood, but I just couldn’t get into the story or the writing. I’ve also heard conflicting reviews where people say that the magic system is a little confusing. I’m not sure that I’m really ready for a book that I need to keep a cheat sheet for the different types of magic. I have both this book and its sequel, Windwitch, but haven’t found the motivation. I’ve really been interested in books with a great friendship theme lately so maybe soon? Maybe?

A darker shade of magic.jpg

A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC by V.E. Schwab:

I have put this one off for so many reasons. Number 1 – When I bought this one it was really close to the release date for the second book, so I planned on waiting until I had both and I could read both back to back (still haven’t bought book two BTW). Number 2 – I’m not convinced V.E. Schwab is the right author for me. I read Vicious a few years ago and liked it, but her writing style never fit with me. It felt like I was reading with a stutter. Almost like I expected her words to be organized in a certain way and when the sentences didn’t read how I expected them to, I had to go back and reread the sentence again. As the book went on it got a bit easier but I still struggled through till the end. So now I’m apprehensive to read another one of her books. But I will give her another chance. Number 3 – People seem to have passionate views on this series. They either love it or dislike it and not much in between. I’m not judging the book before experiencing it for myself, but many people with the same tastes as mine disliked it so now I’m nervous.

carry-on

CARRY ON by Rainbow Rowell:

I’ve read quite a few Rainbow Rowell books and was surprised that I didn’t like Fan Girl. I mean I REALLY didn’t like Fan Girl. I wish that I would have read it when I was younger because I would have been able to relate to the characters more. I know that this book technically has nothing to do with Fan Girl at all. This is the fan fiction story associated with it, but the story line is completely different – but I’m nervous to read this all the same. I’ve talked to a few other people who said that they didn’t like Fan Girl but loved this, so I guess there’s hope! I still don’t know when I’m going to pick this one up though…..

So there it is – my list of shame lol. There were a few others that I could have added to this list (like the Percy Jackson series) but if I listed them all this post would possibly go on forever. I do plan on picking these books up this year though. Are there any that you would recommend I pick up first? Do you have a list of shame? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Until next time, happy reading!

I’ve only read ADSOM from this list but the others are on my TBR too! Particularly excited for Mistborn because everyone raves about it.

  3. I haven’t read any of these either! I’ve been meaning to read Carry On for a while because I love Rainbow Rowell! And the A Darker Shade of Magic series and Truthwitch have been on my TBR for a while, too! Let’s hope we’ll both get to these soon 😀

    1. Too many books and so little time!! If only there was more time in a day or the ability to read one page per second, THEN, then we could change the world!

    1. I’m not convinced about Carry On. It seems a little too closely related to Harry Potter for me. I guess time will tell

I haven’t read any of these either. I own Truthwitch and Carry On, the latter for almost two years now. The former was a recent purchase. Hoping to mark these as “read” in 2017.

    1. The funniest thing is – when Truthwitch came out I HAD to have it! I bought it the day it was released……. why? lol It’s so nice to know I’m not the only one who does these things!

  8. I haven’t read A Darker Shade of Magic or Carry On either. Sometimes it feels like I’m the only one 😀

  9. Oooh, a good list! The only one I’ve read is Mistborn, which is totally worth giving a shot. The first book is really good, the second one is a little slow, and the third one is amazing and features the Sanderson Avalance, in which everything comes together so fast and brilliantly you’re basically knocked over in an avalanche of plot.

I tried Red Rising and really, really didn’t like it. I know it’s super popular so I’m probably in the minority, but it just didn’t do it for me.

Didn’t like ADSOM. at all. Tried twice. Just not for me. I’ve looked at Red Rising several times but haven’t picked it up.
I need to get book 2 in Mistborn. Waiting until I can buy the audiobook.

I haven’t read any of these books either. Carry On is still collecting dust on my shelf and I recently bought Red Rising, I hope I at least pick up the later soon enough!

  13. Ah, the Shame List. It all comes back to how you get your books: borrow, buy, receive gift or win giveaway/ARC. I now keep a “next to read” on my GR shelves so I constantly see them and have to pick from that shelf before going out to get more on my own dollar! Trying to alternate ARC, then series I like, then others from shelf.

Such problems! I’ve heard great things about MIST. I’d say start there. Give yourself an artificial deadline for each of the 5!

I haven’t read any of these yet either. I do have Mistborn Book 1 and Red Rising on my Audible TBR shelf. Now you have me thinking about which books I would put on a ‘popular books I haven’t read’ list.
